Starting July 16th, flights to Syria's capital will be re-enabled by UAE airline Emirates.
Emirates is set to restart flights to Damascus on July 16th, marking its return to Syria's capital for the first time since suspending operations in 2012.
Initially offering three weekly flights on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Sundays, the airline will add a Saturday flight from August 2nd before moving to daily service starting October 26th. Flights will depart Dubai at 12:00 and return from Damascus at 16:30, operated by a Boeing 777-200LR.
'Re-establishing air travel and connectivity is good news for our customers that make up the expansive Syrian diaspora across the Americas, Europe and the GCC, who are eager to fly back home and reconnect to their roots, and leverage their knowledge, skills, expertise and resources in ongoing development efforts,' His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group, tells SceneTraveller.
The airline's codeshare with flydubai will enhance connectivity, while officials expect the flights to further boost bilateral ties and the growing USD 680 million trade relationship between the UAE and Syria.

Egypt condemns Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities: FM Abdelatty at OIC meeting - Foreign Affairs
Egypt's Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, has condemned Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities, warning that they violate international humanitarian law and relevant United Nations (UN) and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) resolutions. 'Egypt strongly condemns this escalation, as it poses a direct threat to regional and international security and stability,' Abdelatty said during the 51st session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers in Istanbul. He said the Israeli aggression on Iran - a direct violation of international law and the UN Charter - had preempted Washington-Tehran talks brokered by Oman, aimed at reviving diplomacy over Iran's nuclear programme. 'These negotiations aimed to prevent the region from descending into a new wave of escalation and conflict, which would negatively impact all countries in the region.' Abdelatty reiterated that 'there are no military solutions to this crisis,' urging a ceasefire, return to negotiations, and 'halt [to] the current military escalation.' He also called for a comprehensive approach to Iran's nuclear file. He renewed Egypt's call for a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction, criticizing Israel's refusal to join the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) or to place its nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards. The war in Gaza and Palestinian statehood Turning to the war in Gaza, Abdelatty condemned 'the brutal Israeli aggression' on the Strip and warned of efforts to displace Palestinians forcibly. 'The OIC has always played a pivotal role in supporting the Palestinian cause,' he said. He insisted that regional peace cannot be achieved without 'ending the occupation and establishing a Palestinian state on the 4 June 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.' Abdelatty stressed that the Palestinian cause remains at the forefront of Egypt's foreign policy priorities, in line with its historic role in defending Arab and Islamic rights. Cairo has been working alongside Doha to push for a ceasefire and deliver humanitarian aid. 'Since the beginning of the brutal Israeli aggression on Gaza, Egypt has worked to reach a sustainable ceasefire, in cooperation with Qatar, and to deliver humanitarian aid to the Strip,' he said, citing the worsening humanitarian crisis for more than two million Palestinians. He praised regional and international support for Palestinian rights. He welcomed OIC support for Egypt's Arab-Islamic plan for Gaza's recovery, which he said should begin 'as soon as a ceasefire is reached. " He also welcomed convening a high-level international conference in Cairo to support the plan. Regional instability FM Abdelatty also addressed other Middle East crises. 'Egypt condemns the repeated Israeli violations of Syrian and Lebanese sovereignty,' he said, calling for the immediate withdrawal from the Golan Heights and other Syrian territories, as well as from southern Lebanon, and the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. On Libya, he stressed the importance of an inclusive political process and simultaneous elections alongside the departure of foreign forces. He said Egypt remains committed to protecting Libya's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Regarding Sudan, Abdelatty said Egypt supports a Sudanese-owned political process free from any external interference and would continue cooperating with regional partners to stabilize the country. He also affirmed Egypt's support for Somalia's security and called for broader international backing. He also stressed the need for a political settlement in Yemen to end the humanitarian crisis and preserve the country's unity. On the summit's sidelines, Abdelatty participated in an Arab League coordination meeting and held talks with counterparts from Tunisia, Somalia, Chad, Gambia, Gabon, and Djibouti. Discussions focused on regional security, bilateral ties, and unified action within the OIC to prevent further instability. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Syria says Assad cousin involved in drug trade arrested in border ambush - Region
Syrian authorities arrested Wassim al-Assad, a cousin of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad, the interior ministry said Saturday, in one of the most high-profile arrests since the former president's ouster. Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia in December with only a handful of confidants, abandoning senior officials and security officers, some of whom have reportedly fled to neighbouring countries or taken refuge in the coastal heartland of Assad's Alawite minority. An interior ministry statement said that intelligence services and other authorities managed to "lure the criminal Wassim al-Assad", carrying out a "well-planned ambush that resulted in his successful arrest". He is "considered among the most prominent drug traffickers and people involved in a number of crimes during the period of the former regime", the statement said, without elaborating on the other allegations against him. While Wassim al-Assad did not hold high office, he is the first prominent figure from the Assad family to be arrested since Islamist-led forces toppled the government on December 8, ending five decades of one-family rule. The US Treasury sanctioned him in 2023, saying he had led a paramilitary unit and was "a key figure in the regional drug trafficking network". State news agency SANA, citing an unidentified security source in Homs province, said Wassim al-Assad was arrested on the Syria-Lebanon border. A security source, requesting anonymity, told AFP he was arrested Saturday in the Tal Kalakh area, in Homs province near the frontier. In recent years, Wassim al-Assad, who called himself a "customs broker", posted images of himself on social media near luxury cars, sometimes appearing in military clothing and bearing arms or shooting, at times alongside other armed men. Since taking power, the new authorities have occasionally announced the arrest of Assad-era security and other officials. In April, Syrian authorities said security forces had arrested Sultan al-Tinawi, a former officer in the feared air force intelligence, one of the Assad family's most trusted security agencies. UN hails Egypt's refugee hosting experience as example to follow
Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to Egypt and the Arab League Hanan Hamdan stressed the importance of increasing international support, not only for refugees, but also for host communities that are facing growing pressures. During a meeting with the Cabinet's Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC) on Friday 20/6/2025, Hamdan hailed Egypt's efforts at the institutional and grassroots levels, in support of refugees, describing Egypt's experience in this regard as an example to follow. 'There are no official camps for refugees, who are integrated into the Egyptian society, which continues to welcome them with open arms,' Hamdan pointed out. She noted that the UNHCR is working closely with various ministries, as well as educational and health institutions in Egypt, to provide joint support, which reflects positively on both refugees and the host community. Hamdan said that the UNHCR's visit to Egypt, set for June 24, comes at a crucial time to launch a response plan that deals with the fallout from the Sudanese and Syrian crises while meeting the needs of other refugees in Egypt and supporting host communities in Egypt. She highlighted the burdens Egypt bears to provide decent humanitarian support to these refugees. Asserting the UNHCR's keenness to highlight the suffering of refugees and asylum seekers around the world on World Refugee Day, observed on June 20, Hamdan said that global funding is still not enough to provide for refugees' needs, given the mounting humanitarian crises and their complexity.
