Rangers 'watch' SFA after fine over Brown remark on club media channel

Rangers say the Scottish FA "will be watched closely" after a fine of £3,000 was imposed following a remark made by former player John Brown on club media.The Ibrox club said they would "firmly deny any breach of Scottish FA rules" after former Ibrox defender Brown called a refereeing decision "corrupt" on Rangers TV.In the final match of Rangers' league season, Nicolas Raskin appeared to bundle the ball over the line, with the SFA's key match incident panel later ruling the goal should have stood.Citing being found in breach of SFA disciplinary rule 38, Rangers said: "it is necessary to highlight the broader concerns this outcome raises and the wider implications this has for clarity and confidence in their regulatory processes".
The club explained they had "flagged numerous examples of similar incidents on club channels" as part of their defence."These incidents raise legitimate questions about Scottish FA rules and how consistently they are enforced," Rangers said in a statement."To our knowledge, none of these cases appear to have resulted in charges against the respective clubs."The lack of consistency with the Scottish FA's policing of similar incidents leaves more questions than answers. That is why we will be contacting the Scottish FA chief executive and president to seek clarity on what policies and processes the compliance officer has in place, if any, to ensure a consistent and proportionate approach to enforcement and the equal treatment of member clubs."We shall also be asking the Scottish FA whether they accept that a rule that cannot be applied consistently across all clubs and all platforms risks losing credibility as a fair and enforceable regulation."
'Clear inconsistency'
Referee Nick Walsh and his on-field officials thought the ball had been kept out by Hibernian defender Rocky Bushiri, and VAR Andrew Dallas ruled that there was no camera angle that proved Raskin's effort had gone in.Hibs equalised through Kieron Bowie moments later, with the match finishing 2-2.Brown said on the club's in-house TV channel: "I would say it is corrupt."Commentator Tom Miller replied: "Well, I'm not sure we can actually say that." That is neither proportionate nor consistent, especially when other clubs have made stronger comments on official platforms without consequence."To be clear, we referenced these other examples not to suggest they should have resulted in sanctions, but to highlight the clear inconsistency in how similar incidents have been handled. Club media channels are, by nature, passionate and partisan. Informal, tongue-in-cheek and emotional commentary comes with the territory, especially in live settings."But, in choosing to pursue this case, the Scottish FA has opened the door to closer scrutiny of how similar situations are handled going forward. If this is now the standard, they will be watched closely to ensure it is applied across the board, consistently, without exception and without favour."

That's the most exciting bit. We will see what the players can do, how we are going to have to adapt and tweak to make it really built-in and ready for us, and then the rest will take care of itself.' Rutherglen man who chucked bottle at Celtic goalkeeper jailed

Andrew Watt, 34, launched the missile at the Finnish international at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2025. Watt initially threw a cigarette at Mr Sinisalo after Celtic scored their equaliser through striker Adam Idah. He then picked up a half bottle of Buckfast and hurled it at the goalkeeper, who celebrated the goal in front of the Rangers fans. The bottle was later handed to police officers by a Rangers substitute. Watt was identified the following day on CCTV due to his "distinctive white teeth." Watt pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assaulting Mr Sinisalo. Sheriff Mark McGuire told Watt, of Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, that his actions were not of a "fan" but a "vicious drunken hooligan." "That is his job - your victim was doing his job - the man was at his work. In what possible world could you or anyone else think it is acceptable to throw a bottle at someone at his work? "Had the bottle hit him, the consequences could have been catastrophic, career-ending or worse. In a febrile atmosphere in a stadium which holds over 50,000 people, your actions could have sparked a riot. "It was not just an assault on Mr Sinisalo - what you did could have endangered everyone, man, woman and child that afternoon. "In all the circumstances, to punish you and deter others from acting like you did and to protect the public, I am satisfied there is no alternative to a custodial sentence." Watt was also banned from all football matches for a period of six-and-a-half years. The court heard that after Adam Idah scored, there was a VAR check on the goal to see if it would be allowed. After a two-to-three-minute stoppage, the referee awarded the equalising goal to Celtic. Prosecutor Leo McGinn said: "At that point, Mr Sinisalo turned back to his own goal towards the Rangers fans and pumped his fists. "This sparked an angry reaction from the Rangers fans behind the goal, and a half bottle of Buckfast was thrown in his direction. "The bottle did not strike him but landed on the field of play." A CCTV investigation was carried out by police the next day, which identified Watt as being responsible. Mr McGinn added: "He was seen to throw a lit cigarette in Mr Sinisalo's direction, which had not been spotted by officers. "Watt could be identified by his build and distinctive white teeth." Watt later handed himself in to police officers after he was aware that they were looking for him. Kevin Corr, defending, told the sentencing that Mr Sinisalo was "not gloating" before the assault took place. The lawyer added: "The stadium was tense at the time while the decision was being awarded. "My client had been consuming alcohol on the morning of the game and continued drinking during the match. "It was not a full half bottle of Buckfast as it was in the second half of the match. He knows that this is the behaviour of someone in their teens rather than someone in his mid-thirties - there is no attempt to minimise or justify what happened." The hearing was told that Watt has 21 previous convictions, which include two football-related matters from 2013 and 2015, the latter of which saw him jailed for 10 months with a three-year football ban.

He told Le Telegramme: "The market is calm, it's even very unusual. There are discussions, but nothing's happening, nothing concrete, but Kalidou Sidibe has a potential exit plans." Reports in Portugal also claimed Celtic were in contact with Rio Ave over a deal for Demir Tiknaz - with the Portuegese side holding an option to buy in his Besitkas loan. ‌ However, the £4.2million trigger has now expired - and any deal looks to have been place on hold.
