Online Safety Act to be enforced soon
BANGI: Malaysia is set to enforce the Online Safety Act 2024 soon following its full passage through Parliament and Royal Assent.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, said the Act has already been gazetted and is now awaiting the official enforcement date to be signed by Communications Minister, Fahmi Fadzil.
She said the law will give authorities greater powers to regulate digital platforms and bolster safeguards, particularly to protect children from online harm.
Azalina said the law will come into force as soon as Fahmi signs the enforcement order, enabling the government to act swiftly in removing unlawful content. Under the Act, platform providers will also be required to uphold a defined duty of care.
'After that, there will be a joint council (Online Safety Committee) to define online harms,' she said at a press conference after the monthly assembly of the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) and launch of the National Legal Academy (APN), here today.
Azalina said that while the Online Safety Act centres on platform regulation and digital responsibility, any matter involving children must also be viewed through the lens of the Child Act 2001.
On a separate note, she stressed the urgent need for stronger legal frameworks to ensure corporate accountability, particularly in cases involving public safety and transport negligence.
Citing the recent bus crash that claimed the lives of 15 UPSI students, Azalina called for policy-level discussions on corporate liability, including the potential introduction of corporate manslaughter laws.
'How can a company run a business and not be held responsible? Take the example of what happened with Air India. If something goes wrong mechanically, it should not be enough to just pay out insurance. Someone must be held accountable,' she stressed.

PETALING JAYA : Umno has yet to receive any motion appealing for Hishammuddin Hussein's six-year suspension from the party to be lifted, says its information chief, Azalina Othman Said. Azalina said all Umno divisions were free to table motions at their annual general meetings to convey their views, including on Hishammuddin's suspension, Berita Harian reported. 'Divisions can make their motions or requests, there's no issue, it's their right. Umno is like any other political party. 'But for now, I have not received any motion (for Hishammuddin's suspension to be rescinded). Perhaps it's still with the party's management division,' she was quoted as saying. Sembrong Umno had reportedly approved a motion urging the party leadership to reinstate Hishammuddin, its former division chief, as a member. Johor Umno chief Onn Hafiz Ghazi, who officiated the Sembrong division meeting over the weekend, pledged to bring the motion to the party's top leadership. Hishammuddin was suspended from the party in January 2023. According to media reports, the suspension letter cited a violation of Clause 20.9 of the Umno constitution, although no further details were provided. Hishammuddin, who is still the MP for Sembrong, said he refused to appeal as he was never informed of the reason for his suspension.

Participants Of Gempur Rasuah 2.0 Rally Under Probe For Nine Offences
KOTA KINABALU, June 23 (Bernama) -- Participants of the Gempur Rasuah 2.0 rally are being investigated for nine offences related to the peaceful assembly held last Saturday (June 21), Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said. He said the offences include incitement, open burning in a public area, possession of dangerous or corrosive substances during the rally, and raising sensitive issues involving royalty, religion, and race (3R). Investigations are being conducted not only under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 but also under the Sedition Act 1948 and the Penal Code. To date, we've received six police reports related to this case and opened three investigation papers covering nine offences. There were incidents during the rally that should not have occurred. 'No arrests have been made so far, but beginning today, several individuals involved will be called in to provide their statements,' he told a press conference at the Sabah Police Headquarters here today. The rally, organised by Suara Mahasiswa Universiti Malaysia Sabah, included a march through Kota Kinabalu and placards highlighting various issues in Sabah, such as corruption and water supply. Participants also burned a caricature of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Jauteh said the organisers had submitted a notification to the police, as required under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012. Police then responded with 15 conditions to ensure public order was maintained. 'Many people misunderstand the process. The Act does not approve or license rallies — it simply outlines the procedure for organisers to notify the police, and for the police to respond. Our role is to help maintain public order and safeguard everyone involved, including the participants. 'Unfortunately, in this case, the organisers failed to comply with the stated conditions. While voicing their concerns is their right, it must be done responsibly and without provocation,' he said.

UMNO divisions may submit motions before delegate meeting
SHAH ALAM: All UMNO divisions are allowed to submit any motions ahead of the party's delegate meeting, said UMNO information chief Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. Azalina said the motions would be collected and submitted to the party leadership to examine the matters raised. 'I think anyone can make (submit) an application (motion). That is their right,' she said after the launch of the Premier Financial Literacy Programme for Public Higher Education Institutions (IPTA) and Private Higher Education Institutions (IPTS) Levels 2025 by Malaysian Insolvency Department at Dewan Agung Tuanku Canselor, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam today. Azalina who is also the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), said this in response to a question regarding the motion to lift the suspension of former vice president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein. Meanwhile, she confirmed that UMNO has not received any applications related to the matter. 'I don't see (receive) any application (to lift Hishammuddin's membership suspension). Maybe it's in the party management meeting,' he said. Yesterday, the media reported that UMNO would consider a motion to lift Hishammuddin's membership suspension. UMNO vice president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin at a press conference after the Batu Pahat UMNO division delegates' meeting reportedly said that it is a tradition and practice of the party leadership to examine every motion submitted by UMNO divisions in conjunction with the delegates' meeting. UMNO Sembrong Division on June 21, brought a motion for Hishammuddin's suspension to be lifted immediately without any conditions.
