Police seize 73kg ganja in Kepong raid

KUALA LUMPUR: Police arrested two men and seized 70 compressed packages of ganja weighing more than 73 kilogrammes in a raid along Jalan Baiduri, Kepong, last Tuesday.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) acting director DCP Mat Zani @ Mohd Salahuddin Che Ali said the duo, believed to have been active as drug transporters since early this year, were arrested at 1.25 am.
He said initial investigations revealed that all the drugs, worth RM227,063, had been smuggled in from a neighbouring country through the Perlis border.
'The raid, conducted with the Perlis NCID, led to the arrest of two suspects, aged 38 and 33, and the seizure of a Perodua Aruz.
'Both suspects tested negative for drugs,' he said in a statement today.
Mat Zani said checks revealed that the first suspect had 17 previous criminal records, while the second had four prior records, including drug-related offences.
He said the case was being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, and action had also been taken against the suspects under the Dangerous Drugs (Forfeiture of Property) Act 1988.
He added that two pairs of gold earrings, estimated to be worth RM1,950, were also seized, bringing the total value of the confiscated items to RM229,013.
Mat Zani said both suspects had been remanded for seven days to assist in the investigation, while the police were actively tracking down the remaining syndicate members still at large.
He also urged members of the public to channel any information on drug-related activities via the NCID hotline at 012-208 7222.

Man nabbed after high-speed chase, found with suspected drugs

BUTTERWORTH: A man was arrested following a high-speed chase in the Bagan Dalam area here last night, after he allegedly attempted to flee from policemen and obstructed civil servants in the performance of their duties. The incident, which happened at about 10pm yesterday, came to light after a video of the chase went viral on social media. Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Abd Rahman said policemen from the motorcycle patrol unit of the district police headquarters had ordered a suspicious locally manufactured vehicle to stop three times using beacon lights and sirens. He said the driver, however, ignored the instructions and sped off. "The suspect was eventually apprehended in front of the Ampang Jajar Flats in Butterworth. "A body search revealed a transparent plastic packet believed to contain syabu. "A subsequent urine test revealed the suspect tested positive for methamphetamine," he said in a statement tonight. The suspect has been remanded for four days until June 23 for investigation. The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant, as well as Sections 12(2) and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Anuar said a background check also revealed that the suspect had three prior drug-related offences. He urged the public not to sensationalise the incident, warning that it could disrupt public order and interfere with the ongoing investigation. Used clothes seller acquitted, discharged of possessing drugs

KOTA KINABALU (June 20): A used clothes seller was acquitted and discharged by a Sessions Court here today from two counts of possessing cannabis and syabu. Judge Dayang Ellyn Narisa Abang Ahmad freed Mohd Jamri Basir, 24, after a full trial. The first count accused Mohd Jamri of possessing 158.6 grams of cannabis at an apartment at Jalan Tuaran Bypass on May 15, 2020. The charge was under Section 39A (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 6 of the same Act. The second count accused him of having 6.64 grams of syabu at the same place and on the same day. The alleged offence was under Section 12 (2), punishable under Section 39A (1), both of the same Act. The prosecution commended the case on December 7, 2022 and rested it on August 15, 2024. Ten witnesses were called by the prosecution while the defence called three witnesses, including Mohd Jamri. Mohd Jamri was represented by counsel Dominic Chew Ban Huat.

Court extends remand order for couple involved in Sibu drug trafficking case

SIBU: Sibu Magistrate's Court today granted an extension of the remand for a husband and wife recently arrested for allegedly masterminding a drug trafficking syndicate around Sibu. Magistrate Oon Kork Chern allowed the 52-year-old male suspect to be remanded for seven days, while the 44-year-old female suspect would be remanded for four days to assist investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Previously, both suspects had been remanded for seven days, which ended today. The application for the extended remand was submitted by police investigating officer Insp Aminur Rizwan Saiful Bahari. On June 16, police successfully busted a drug trafficking syndicate in the town, seizing various types of drugs and assets totaling over RM8.5 million after carrying out raids at three locations here on June 12 and 13.
