MACUA calls for justice and closure for families of illegal miners who died at Stilfontein

Eyewitness News15-06-2025

JOHANNESBURG - The Mining Affected Communities United in Action (MACUA) is calling for justice and closure for the families of illegal miners who died during Operation Vala Umgodi in Stilfontein, North West.
The organisation, along with religious and traditional leaders, held a cleansing ceremony at shafts 10 and 11 of the Buffelsfontein mine this week, where dozens of miners perished.
Since August last year, over 1,000 illegal miners surfaced from underground, while others died, reportedly from dehydration and starvation.

MACUA's Sabelo Mnguni said that many of the deceased were buried without the community's involvement.
"Some of them were not retrieved, some of them were buried through state funerals where even the community is not participating."

Image via pexels Police arrested nine suspected illegal miners during a strategic operation at Ha-Pasha, Limpopo. The suspects, aged between 22 and 44, also face charges for violating the Immigration Act. Illegal mining has become prevalent in the province. However, the Sekhukhune District's Operation Vala Umgodi team is relentlessly committed to combating the practice. Intelligence-led officers identified the suspected illegal miners. The suspects are currently in custody at Mecklenburg SAPS. Officers seized several items during the operation. Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Masekela Magoro, said SAPS remains committed to protecting the country's natural resources. Magoro said the police will continue efforts to dismantle illegal mining to ensure a safer, sustainable future. The arrests come after the country's mining sector saw its sixth consecutive month of recession. Data released by Statistics South Africa showed that the mining sector had a significant decline in production, down 7.8% year-on-year in April. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the North West says it has made a significant step in the illegal mining fight. The NPA's Asset Forfeiture Unit obtained a preservation order relating to about R16 million worth of gold-bearing material (GBM). These were allegedly used for unlawful activities. NPA spokesperson in North West, Sivenathi Gunya, said the order follows investigations from 2016 to 2020. During this period, certain suspects and entities reportedly transported GBM from a dormant mine to a processing plant in Stilfontein, Klerksdorp. Thereafter, it was refined, which contravened the Precious Metals Act. As a result, police arrested one suspect, who is expected to appear in court on Wednesday, 2 July. Wanted suspect killed in shoot out with police in Kagiso

Police engage in a tense shootout with a wanted suspect at an illegal mining site in Kagiso, highlighting the ongoing battle against crime in Gauteng. A suspect believed to have opened fire on police earlier this month was killed during a confrontation with law enforcement officers at an illegal mining site in Kagiso. According to Gauteng police, the man was wanted for a June 3 incident in which he allegedly shot at officers in the Zamimpilo Informal Settlement. Acting on intelligence, members of Operation Vala Umgodi tracked him to Soul City Informal Settlement, where he was reportedly involved in illegal mining activity. During the operation on Friday, June 13, the suspect fired on police officers as they approached, triggering a shootout. He was fatally wounded in the exchange. A pistol used by the suspect was recovered at the scene and will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether it was used in other crimes. The SAPS said Operation Vala Umgodi - an ongoing initiative targeting illegal mining syndicates - continues to dismantle illicit operations across Gauteng. Police have urged the public to report any suspicious or criminal activity related to illegal mining to their nearest station or anonymously via Crime Stop at 08600 10111.

Illegal miner shot and arrested during Operation Vala Umgodi

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga has shot and arrested one illegal miner during Operation Vala Umgodi in Simile Township, Nkanini Section, Sabie. According to reports, members of the Combat Team in Sabie received a tip-off from a source about a group of Zama Zamas (foreign nationals) who were allegedly refining gold illegally and selling mercury at a specific address in the area. Police acted on the information and proceeded to the location. Upon arrival, the police ran into three suspects who, without hesitation, opened fire at the police and immediately fled the scene. The police shot back at the suspects, injuring one in the right thigh. The suspect was immediately arrested and admitted to Sabie Hospital under police guard and has since been discharged and placed in custody. The two other suspects managed to escape. The 30-year-old suspect, believed to be a Mozambican, faces charges of possession of gold-bearing material, possession of illicit mining equipment, attempted murder and being an illegal immigrant. The suspect is expected to appear before the Sabie Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, 17 June 2025. The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, welcomed the arrest and thanked the public for providing valuable information that led to the arrest of the suspect. 'Illegal mining continues to threaten our economy and public safety. We will ensure that those who engage in such activities face the full might of the law,' said Mkhwanazi. The police in Tsineng have arrested two suspects in connection with an alleged shooting incident between Ganap and Laxey Village on Saturday, 14 June 2025, claiming two lives. According to police, approximately six suspects allegedly attempted to break into a tuck shop in the area. However, a group of community members reportedly approached the suspects, prompting them to flee the scene. It is alleged that one of the suspects, trying to escape, stopped a vehicle near the scene and shot a 38-year-old driver and his passenger. The passenger died on the scene and the driver succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. An intensive search led to a residence in Mothibistad, where three men were arrested. Investigations are currently ongoing.
