Rhyl pub with new landlady will host RNLI fundraiser weekend

Rhyl Journal11-06-2025

Naomi Clarke, 43, who is 'born and bred in Rhyl', is the new landlady of The Swan, on Russell Road.
She started running the pub in late March, and has organised this weekend's fundraiser at the venue (June 14-15).
Rhyl has its own RNLI lifeboat station on East Parade – it was established in 1852 and is now one of the busiest in Wales.
Its new boathouse was completed in 2001, and it houses both an all-weather and an inshore lifeboat.
Naomi said: 'We're looking for local businesses to donate raffle prizes and help our local RNLI crew with vital funds that are needed every day to help them save lives at sea, and to help with all of their hard work for us in our community.
'We will be having live music all weekend, with great offers on drinks (with our new price range added), and will also be celebrating Father's Day on Sunday, too.
'There is no better place to be this weekend.'
The Swan is situated just off Rhyl's town centre.
The property also features a dining area, five bedrooms, an enclosed external patio/garden, and a separate shop premises available in addition to the pub.
After taking on the running of the pub, Naomi told the Journal in April: 'It's my first pub as a landlady. I've lived here all of my life, and it's one of the oldest pubs in Rhyl.
'It just appealed to me in every way.'

'I will bring them home': A son's determination after losing his parents in the Air India Crash

A man has promised to bring his parents home to Orpington after they died in an Air India Crash to London Gatwick. Ashok Patel, 74, and Shobhana Patel, 71, have lived in Greater London since the 80s. Ashok was a financial advisor, while Shobahana a microbiologist. The pair travelled to India for a religious trip known as a Yatra which helps people find peace when they eventually pass away. Unfortunately, just days later, they were among 53 British nationals that died in a fatal plane crash in Ahmedabad, West India just minutes after take off. It is still uncertain when the pair will be returned to London though the process to identify them was quick. Their son, Miten, went to India and describes the process as a "miracle". He added "it's a result of meticulous and efficient planning" which meant he had to put his grief to the side to focus on fulfilling his parents' wishes. "I haven't come to terms with it. My main priority was the promise I made my parents to bring them home," he says. He is one of dozens of British family members who have flown to Ahmedabad to identify and bring their loved ones back. "It is not an easy process when there are so many people that have gone through this tragedy," he tells ITV News London. Despite how difficult the last seven days have been, Miten praises his family and the wider community for all their kindness and support in the process. It all began, when Miten received a phone call from his father's friend who was in India. "I couldn't believe it," he says. "I was with him on Father's Day, I held the first time in this whole ordeal I cried because I felt like I was actually hugging my dad." Miten contacted insurance companies, collected dental records and DNA samples to take to India in order to support the identification process. He says it was fate that his mother was identified just four hours after his father was, and added: "It felt like my mum was saying to my dad, stay where you are, you're not going alone, I'm coming with you." In India, he was shown items that belonged to his parents that were found among the wreckage, from the label of his father's beloved Stafford shirt to his mother swan-pendant necklace that Miten's young daughter Amira will now inherit. "My mum used to say one day you will have that. It just feels like she's left that necklace for her," he says. Once his parents are back in the UK, Miten aims to hold a funeral service for them both together. "They have made it this far together so I would like to send them off together," he says. While Miten's dad Ashok was born in India and his family have ethnic roots to the country, India was an 'unknown country' for Miten who grew up in the UK. "I'm just glad I was able to fulfil my promise that I made to my parents and my family that I will make sure that they come home because the UK is their home." "They've been here for over 40 years." Miten says his parents finally being cremated will start off a more personal mourning process for him that he has been delaying. "Once I get them home and we give them a good send off then I'll grieve in my own time, but at the moment I've just got to stay strong for them," he says.

I can't keep it beside my bed at night, so I leave it in another room. Very loud!" Walkers wanted to risk everything to save lamb after 100ft cliff plunge on North Wales coast

More info Worried animal lovers were willing to risk life and limb when a lamb plunged 100ft (30 metres) down a coastal cliff. The animal was left stranded on a ledge 33ft above the sea at low tide - and only 5ft above the high water mark. The drama unfolded at Llanbadrig on the north coast of Anglesey, close to the tiny uninhabited island of Ynys Badrig (Middle Mouse), the northernmost point of Wales. The lamb had fallen from Llanlleiana Head, a crag-bound hill renowned for its hillfort, tower and the ruins of a porcelain works below. On learning that people were planning to rescue the lamb themselves, Coastguards and RNLI volunteers decided to step in. 'The recovery was approved as members of the public were willing to put themselves in danger to rescue the lamb themselves,' said a spokesperson for RNLI Moelfre Lifeboat. 'By launching our lifeboat and rescuing the lamb, we stopped a potential human injury.' As well as Moelfre lifeboat, Wednesday evening's call-out (June 18) involved Coastguard rescue teams from Cemaes Bay and Moelfre. Join the North Wales Live WhatsApp community group where you can get the latest stories delivered straight to your phone Once the lamb had been located, at the foot of cliffs, the all-weather lifeboat was guided to the scene where it launched an inflatable rescue boat (Y boat). (Image: RNLI Moelfre Lifeboat) Asked to clamber ashore was a crew member with previous experience working with sheep. Managing to reach the lamb, he saw it was 'clearly tired and lethargic'. Moelfre Coastguard said: 'With a little gentle persuasion, the lamb was safely coaxed off the ledge, brought onboard the Y boat, and transported to Cemaes Bay.' After a few phone calls, the lamb's owner was located and arrangements were made for its safe return home. Being uninjured, the farmer reunited the lamb with the rest of the flock. RNLI Moelfre said it was a 'successful and heartwarming outcome'. (Image: Moelfre Coastguard) Moelfre Coastguard added: 'Aside from a few bumps and scrapes, the lamb appeared well – if understandably a bit shaken by its coastal adventure!' A RNLI Moelfre crew member said the call-out highlighted the importance of the public's role in reporting such incidents. Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter sent twice daily to your inbox They added: 'As tempting as it is to try to rescue an animal in difficulty, people should think about the potential injury they may cause themselves. "This member of the public made the right decision by contacting the coastguard and allowing them to task the assets best suited to assisting the animal.' Also involved in a lamb rescue this week was Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team. Volunteer Jess carried it down an Eryri mountain in a sack to ensure its safety. Find out what's happening near you
