You can get free food all summer at these Helium Mobile pop-ups in NYC
New Yorkers are famously skeptical of anything labeled 'free,' especially if it's tech-related and promises 'no catch.' But this summer, Helium Mobile is making good on a rare deal: a $0 phone plan and an entire lineup of pop-up events serving free food across the five boroughs. That's right—no contracts, no credit checks and no tab for your tacos.
The wireless newcomer is celebrating its people-powered 5G network with a citywide tour of culinary collabs and giveaways at some of NYC's tastiest destinations. The hook? Come for the bites, stay to learn how to finally ditch your sky-high phone bill.
Kicking things off on June 3, the brand teams up with Isshiki Matcha in the East Village, where a free matcha and live DJ set will help ease you into your week. If you're more into tortillas than tea, Alta Calidad in Prospect Heights is serving up free tacos and Helium Mobile flair on July 15.
You'll also find Helium at some of the city's most beloved food fests: Queens Night Market (June 7 and August 2), Uptown Night Market (June 12 and July 10), Bronx Night Market (June 28 and July 26) and Smorgasburg Williamsburg (June 21 and July 19). Expect late-night bites, surprise merch and the rare joy of learning you can have a phone plan that costs exactly $0.
Not a night market type? No worries. Helium's also sending out Nice Day Moto, a mobile coffee cart slinging free lattes from a custom motorcycle at various Manhattan and Brooklyn locations throughout the summer, including Pier 36, the Brooklyn Museum and the Meatpacking District.

Inside New York's 'Pigeon Fest' where impersonators battle for title
A famous New York landmark was overrun with pigeons this week. The Big Apple is known for a lot of great things – the Empire State Building, world-class entertainment and famous faces. But one crucial piece of New York is often overlooked: the humble pigeon. The bird has gotten a lot more attention in recent months, thanks to a new statue installed at New York's High Line. The sculpture, a 17-foot-tall pigeon dubbed 'Dinosaur' by Ivan Argote, has brought pigeon lovers around the world to 30th Street and 10th Avenue. Cashing in on this pigeon-mania, the High Line decided to hold a pigeon pageant on National Pigeon Appreciation Day. Dozens of New Yorkers showed up in full costume, feathers and all, to compete for the crown prize. 13-year-old Athena told the New York Times pigeons were beautiful and fun to learn about: 'What's not to love?' A small pigeon in a red bow tie, along with dozens of participants and eager onlookers, took part in Pigeon Fest last Saturday. Contestants were judged by ornithologists on their impressions of pigeons – some even threw bread and attempted to peck at it. Categories included 'plumage', 'strut' and 'coo'. One contestant, dubbed 'Carrie Beakshaw' (a play on Sex And The City's Carrie Bradshaw) performed a monologue. But the crown was given to Miriam Abrahams, a volunteer at the Wild Bird Fund, which has thousands of pigeons they take care of. Her costume was incredibly lifelike, and she said she took a month to make it, even laying an egg during her performance. The bizarre festival is said to be a one-off, as the statue which brought everyone together will only be on display until next spring. But artist Argote said: 'The pigeon is an icon, somehow, of the margins, so it attracts a lot of people who are either involved with pigeons literally or feel represented by its complexity. 'It goes way beyond the work. As a sculptor and as an artist, you try to create something, but as soon as it gets into the community, it becomes more meaningful.' More Trending The love for pigeons isn't contained to just New York – in Cardiff, a dad who saved a pigeon from drowning welcomed the bird into his family and takes him for walks on a leash. Philip Weston-Thomas was on a walk around Roath Park Lake in Cardiff with his wife Rebecca and 14-year-old daughter one January when his daughter spotted the bird struggling in the freezing water. Philip jumped into action and scooped up the pigeon, which was freezing, shaking and 'on its last legs'. The family took the bird, whom they named Bobbi, home with them and nursed him back to health. Kendall Jenner's tequila brand is hosting a West Village bar crawl for the Solstice
We did it! Tomorrow is summer solstice, the longest day of the year. To celebrate our extra hours, sun-loving New Yorkers can soak up sizzling rays on Manhattan's new beach, party like a Swede, or (perhaps most enticing) sip the best margaritas in NYC. If Kendal Jenner has her way, all the West Village girlies and their besties will flock to her tequila-fueled bar crawl across Lower Manhattan. Beginning Friday, June 20, the notorious star's liquor brand 818 Tequila will host a 'Sip Into Summer' series all weekend long, featuring notable watering holes like historic White Horse Tavern and full glam Sweet Linda, among others mapped below. Slip out of the office early to toast the official start of summer with tequila cocktails like spicy watermelon margaritas and tequila mules — maybe encourage your coworkers to cut loose, too. Even St. Tropez Wine Bar, the Provençal grape destination, created a custom cocktail called Spicy Solstice to set your summer nights ablaze. Of course, event organizers hope you hop across lower Manhattan to taste every agave concoction, but you could always park it at your favorite spot to take full advantage of happy hour drink specials. Downtown at Blue Haven South, the 818 Daisy (tequila, citrus, liqueur) is only $12, while White Horse Tavern will be slinging refreshing cucumber margaritas for $17. Most other drinks on the boozy path ring up between $19 and $22. Check out the full list of participating bars: West Village Arthur & Sons (38 Eighth Ave) White Horse Tavern (567 Hudson St) Lume (259 W 4th St) St. Tropez Wine Bar (304 W4th St) Nolita Beyond the Pale (53 Spring St) East Village Sweet Linda (9 Second Ave) FiDi Blue Haven South (121 Fulton St) Lower East Side Bar Belly (14 Orchard St) Pardon Me (162 Orchard St)

Where to find the best steak in London, from Hawksmoor to Flat Iron and more
It's a measure of the all-conquering success of this British steak and cocktail chain that New Yorkers welcomed the Manhattan outpost with rave reviews, which must be the food equivalent of taking coals to Newcastle, then burning the place down. It is a further measure of Hawksmoor's success that the Big Apple outpost feels as American as the UK restaurants feel British, for each branch has remained reassuringly individual. This Spitalfields original, just up from Nicholas Hawksmoor's Christ Church, is where it all began in 2006, and though the formula remains largely unchanged, it rarely feels formulaic. British beef from regenerative farms is grilled just long enough for the outside to turn crusty while the inside stays pink and served alongside side orders that would make a meal in themselves: fatty bone marrow, thick-cut maple bacon and creamy sauces for dunking beef-dripping French fries. Starters and puddings — scallops with white port and garlic, sticky toffee sundae — are every bit as good and, though prices are steep, huge portions makes three courses unlikely. There are other branches across the capital, this is simply our pick of the bunch. The new-ish one in Canary Wharf, which floats and has a spectacular bar, is definitely one to try, though, and lately the one in Covent Garden has been on blistering form too.
