MIAMI (Reuters) -Inter Miami have no intention to play for a draw when they face Palmeiras in their final Group A game at the Club World Cup on Sunday, a result that would send both teams into the knockout stages.
It would be a massive achievement for Inter Miami, who beat Porto and drew against Al Ahly in their first two games.
Palmeiras are top of the group on four points, ahead of Miami on goal difference with Porto and Al Ahly both on one point.
WHY IT'S IMPORTANT
All four teams can still qualify for the last 16 but only Miami and Palmeiras have their fate in their hands. Palmeiras need a draw to qualify top of the group.
The group winners will face the second-placed team in Group B, currently led by Botafogo with six points while Champions League winners Paris St Germain are second on three points.
KEY QUOTES:
Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano: "We're facing possibly one of the most important games in the history of our club. Above all, let that fill us with enthusiasm to be able to play it, let it not be a burden, not a burden, but an excitement and a challenge for this group of players who are also doing well up until now.
"It would be a big mistake if we went into it thinking about not playing it and only about the result. I think that when you think about the result and don't go into it, certain things can happen during the game that make it very difficult to get back into the game. In the end, our idea is to go and win the game like we've always done, like every time we go into a game, whether it's in the Club World Cup, MLS, the Champions League, or any other competition we're involved in."

Alonso says Rudiger complained of racist insult
Rudiger was visibly angered after an exchange of words with Pachuca's Gustavo Cabral after the final whistle and spoke to Brazilian referee Ramon Abatti Abel. 23 Jun 2025 09:21am Staff members separate Carlos Moreno #25 of CF Pachuca from Antonio Ruediger #22 of Real Madrid during an altercation in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 group H match between Real Madrid CF and CF Pachuca at Bank of America Stadium on June 22, 2025 in Charlotte, North Carolina. (Photo by Richard Pelham / GETTY IMAGES NORTH AMERICA / Getty Images via AFP) Charlotte, June 22, 2025 (AFP) - Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said his defender Antonio Rudiger had complained of a racist incident at the end of Sunday's 3-1 Club World Cup win over Mexican club Pachuca. Rudiger was visibly angered after an exchange of words with Pachuca's Gustavo Cabral after the final whistle and spoke to Brazilian referee Ramon Abatti Abel. (Photo by Richard Pelham / GETTY IMAGES NORTH AMERICA / Getty Images via AFP) Asked about the incident in the post-match press conference, Alonso said: "Toni told us something, we support Toni and we will see what happens. "I think the FIFA protocol has been activated to investigate, but if it has happened, all measures should be taken and we support Antonio because it's something unacceptable. "In football there is no tolerance for this, and if it happened, then measures should be taken. This is what Antonio has told us and we believe him. It's being investigated now," he said. Pachuca coach Jaime Lozano was also asked about the incident but said he was unaware of what had happened. "I just found out from you, you are letting me know, we did not talk about it in the dressing room, I haven't spoken to Cabral about this, I cannot give you an explanation about it because this is the first (I have heard of) this news," he said. "It cannot be justified at all but I will talk to him, I've known him for a little while and and I have never heard of something like that with Pachuca players. I cannot defend my captain at any cost but I will talk about it with him," he said. FIFA did not immediately respond to a request for comment. - AFP

Manchester City pour it on in rout of Al Ain
ATLANTA: Ilkay Gundogan scored twice, Erling Haaland added his first goal of the tournament on a penalty kick and Manchester City thrashed Al Ain 6-0 in Club World Cup Group G play on Sunday night in Atlanta. On a free kick, 19-year-old Claudio Echeverri scored his first goal in a Manchester City shirt, and Oscar Bobb and Rayan Cherki piled on late in the match. Stefan Ortega needed to make just one save for Manchester City (2-0-0, 6 points). Group G will be decided by Thursday's showdown between Man City and Juventus in Orlando, Fla. They've both secured advancement to the knockouts after beating Al Ain (0-2-0, 0 points) from Abu Dhabi and Wydad AC from Morocco. Khalid Eisa made five saves but could not keep up with Al Ain's Premier League opponent, which ended the night with a 21-5 advantage in total shots. Man City showed complete control early on and were rewarded with a 3-0 halftime lead. They earned the first of their nine corner kicks in the eighth minute, and Bernardo Silva's offering found its way to Gundogan on the far side of the box. He chipped a lob shot that Eisa had no prayer of defending and the ball tucked into the corner of the net. Echeverri's free-kick ripper in the 27th was the result of a foul that earned Al Ain's Facundo Zabala a yellow card. He placed the shot in the top-center of the net above Eisa's head. Haaland had a similarly easy time when he stepped to the spot five minutes into first-half stoppage. He shot to his right as Eisa dove the wrong way. The next flurry of goals began in the 73rd minute when Gundogan took a pass from Silva, split multiple defenders in the box, turned toward the net and deposited the ball behind Eisa. Bobb struck in the 84th minute and Cherki, who subbed on for Silva to make his Man City debut, scored in the 89th minute on a one-timer off a feed from Haaland. -- Reuters/Field Level Media
