Varanasi: An innovative beautification initiative is underway in the city through collaborative efforts of Varanasi development authority, Banaras locomotive works, ministry of railways, and ministry of culture.
A total of 62 unique sculptures are being installed at various prominent locations, of which, 35 are already in place, while 27 sculptures will soon be installed.Regarding the project, VDA vice chairman Pulkit Garg said crafted from scrap materials, the sculptures will not only convey message of environment conservation but also demonstrate how items considered useless can be transformed into something creative and beautiful. The sculptures embody themes such as women's empowerment, yoga, sports, millets, handicrafts, environmental protection and cultural heritage. Each piece reflects cultural, historical, or spiritual significance of its location, allowing tourists to understand the area's uniqueness without a guide. Garg said artwork made of stone, fibre and metal was being installed at 62 sites in the city as part of this plan. Sculptures will soon be placed at 27 more locations. Additionally, aspects like landscaping, greenery and night lighting are being considered for beautification.Transformative art of wooden toy installation has been placed on the airport premises along with a peacock. Artwork depicting Kathak dance and Tejas fighter jet are at the airport crossing, boxing, cricket and javelin throw at Harhua crossing, Bodhi tree at Sandaha Atal Chowk, agni stambh asana at Bhojubir, ghats at Circuit House, sunflowers at VDA premises, carpet weaver at Chowkaghat, abhikalpana on NIFT campus, Rudraksha with Hand at Rudraksha Convention Center, lion at Ring Road (Azamgarh) crossing, mother and child at district women's hospital, fish, dhammachakrat, tree for eternal life and guru shishya tradition at Sarnath, church near Lal Girja, three art models on BHU campus, one at Sant Ravidas Sampark Park, cricketer at Ring Road (Varanasi-Prayagraj junction), para-olympics at Sigra Stadium, yoga with folded hands at BR Ambedkar Chauraha, bull fighting at Manduadih Road, prabhat vachan at Sampurnanand Sanskrit University, carpet makers at trade facility centre and a sitting Nandi (bull) at Maidagin crossing.The initiative not only enhanced beauty of Varanasi but also highlighted the city's social and cultural values, said Garg, adding that by transforming scrap into art, these sculptures inspire the reuse of materials, marking a significant step towards sustainable development.

New GVMC commissioner takes charge

Speaking to the media, Garg said that essential public infrastructure, including drinking water, street lighting, drainages, and roads, would be prioritised. "With the cooperation of all stakeholders, efforts would be made to secure the highest national ranking for Visakhapatnam in the upcoming Swachh Survekshan drive and GVMC would extend all support to the proposed metro and flyover projects in the city," he said. Ketan Garg assumes charge as GVMC Commissioner

The 2018 batch IAS officer, Ketan Garg, assumed charge as the Commissioner of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) on Saturday. His appointment ends a four-month vacancy in the position, which had remained unfilled since the transfer of P. Sampath Kumar by the State Government in January. In the interim, District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad had been handling the additional responsibilities of the post. After assuming charge at the office, Mr. Ketan Garg said that sanitation and beautification would be given top priority in the city. Interacting with the media, Mr. Garg said that providing essential civic infrastructure such as drinking water supply, street lighting, drainage systems, and road maintenance would also be given importance. He said he would strive to take forward the development by coordinating with corporators and public elected representatives. He assured that funds from GVMC, the State, and the Central governments would be utilised effectively for the development of the city. He said that the corporation will extend complete support to government flagship projects like proposed metro rail and flyover which are in various stages. Mr. Ketan Garg said that he would prepare plans to make Visakhapatnam cleanest city in the country as part of preparation for the coming Swachh Survekshan, with cooperation from all stakeholders. He said that steps would be taken for development of parks and junctions. With the monsoon season round the corner, measures would be implemented to clear waste from major drains. To tackle mosquito-borne diseases, seasonal surveys will be conducted to monitor and prevent diseases like malaria and dengue. When asked about defunct CCTV cameras, he said that the CCTV aspect would be managed jointly with the Police department. He also expressed interest in collaborating with other cities to develop 'Sister City' partnerships. The previous posting of Mr. Garg was Commissioner of Rajahmundry Municipal Corporation.

Eight complaints settled on first day of ‘With People' project in Idukki

The Idukki district administration started a new project called 'With People' (Janangalodoppam) in Peerumade village on Thursday. The project began in Kokkayar village in Peerumade taluk with Idukki Subcollector Anoop Garg collecting complaints from the people of the village and working at the village office on the day. According to officials, of the 15 complaints received on the day, eight were settled. The remaining complaints have been forwarded to the Public Works department, the panchayat and the Kerala Water Authority for further action. Officials said complaints on border disputes, road issues and title deed applications were received. According to officials, the project was launched at the initiative of Mr. Garg to conduct interactions with the public and building people's trust in public institutions. Officials said the Subcollector would visit a village office in the Idukki, Thodupuzha and Peerumade taluks every second and fourth Thursdays and work there.
