
China's bullet-shape satellite test paves the way for very low orbit surveillance network
China has completed key technology checks for an experimental satellite in very low Earth orbit (VLEO), marking an initial step towards building a 300-satellite constellation for high-resolution remote sensing and communications, according to local media.
Chutian-001, which was launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre a year ago, showed core capabilities – including satellite system performance, high-resolution smart imaging and space environment monitoring – Hubei Daily reported.
The outlet said the tests showed major progress in key areas, such as precise satellite control in very low orbits, real-time target detection using domestically developed technologies and multi-sensor monitoring of the near-Earth environment.

The report did not disclose the satellite's altitude or specifications such as mass or size. However, images from last year's Zhuhai air show revealed the satellite's streamlined, bullet-shaped body designed to reduce atmospheric drag, a key challenge for spacecraft operating below 300km (186 miles) where air resistance is much greater.
VLEO satellites typically circle the Earth at altitudes between 150km and 300km, offering advantages such as lower signal latency, stronger transmission, reduced power needs and potentially lower launch costs.
However, they must regularly fire on-board thrusters to counter atmospheric drag, which shortens their lifespan and demands more frequent replacement.
As part of China's broader effort to grow its commercial space sector, the Chutian constellation project was launched in July 2023 by China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp (CASIC) in partnership with the Hubei provincial government. The constellation will be deployed in three phases.
During the initial technology and service verification stage, one experimental satellite was scheduled for launch last year to test operations in very low orbit. Over 2024-25, a cluster of nine satellites will follow to show real-time Earth observation capabilities.
The second phase from 2026 to 2030 will focus on large-scale deployment. It aims to establish a 300-satellite network offering continuous global coverage with a range of imaging types – visible light, synthetic aperture radar, hyperspectral, and infrared – and response times as short as 15 minutes.
After 2030, the project will enter an integration and expansion phase, completing the full business system and pushing global response times to under 10 minutes.
According to Zhang Chuan, project leader at CASIC, the Chutian constellation will support a wide range of applications, from disaster response and watershed management to agriculture, forestry and fisheries. The system is designed for high revisit rates, fast data processing, intelligent analysis and near-instant downlink capabilities.
'For disaster response and unexpected emergencies, the constellation will eventually support mission dispatch within minutes and transmit live updates from affected areas in real time,' he told China News Service in April 2024.
Zhang said the constellation would also benefit the public who in future might use smart devices to access satellite-based services, such as navigation support for autonomous driving, alerts about hazardous road conditions and the real-time monitoring of crowd density, enabled by intelligent cloud detection and change analysis.

Curtin Malaysia students explore Sarawak's rich geology in hands-on field trip

MIRI (June 20): Curtin University Malaysia's Applied Geology programme recently conducted an immersive interdisciplinary geological field trip for first-year Engineering and Science students, providing hands-on exposure to Sarawak's hydrocarbon-rich terrain and its complex geological structures. The one-day excursion was part of the 'Dynamic Earth (GEOL1008)' unit and involved 27 students from both Science and Engineering disciplines, according to a statement from the university. The field trip was led by Dr Vijay Anand S, a lecturer in Applied Geology, and supported by associate lecturer Fiona Bassy, postgraduate researcher Patricia Henry, and final-year undergraduate Aristotle Joshua Endaya. The students visited key outcrops located about 20 kilometres from the Curtin Malaysia campus, including Jalan Mukah, Miri Central Park, Height Residence, and other well-known areas within the Sarawak Basin, which is renowned for showcasing diverse stratigraphic sequences, fault systems, and fossil-bearing formations. 'This fieldwork allowed students to physically engage with textbook concepts – observing everything from fossil assemblages to iron-rich sediment layers that point to the area's hydrocarbon potential,' said Dr Vijay. Students documented features such as coal beds, fault systems, and stratigraphic sequences, while analysing depositional environments and sediment transport processes. A key highlight was the visit to Miri Central Park, where students encountered rare transported lithologies – offering them a first-hand glimpse of sediment mobilisation in action. The inclusion of engineering students from various specialisations enriched the experience, underlining the growing importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in tackling energy and environmental challenges. 'Seeing how geology informs infrastructure, energy development, and environmental planning was eye-opening for our engineering students,' said Fiona Bassy. 'They approached the rocks not just as formations, but as future assets or challenges in their professional fields,' she added. The Sarawak Basin, a key region in Malaysia's petroleum sector, provided an ideal backdrop to integrate classroom knowledge with real-world geological relevance. Features studied included accretionary complexes, interconnected fault systems, coal deposits, and iron-rich sedimentary rocks. Through such dynamic field-based learning, Curtin Malaysia reinforces its commitment to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education, ensuring students graduate not only with theoretical knowledge but also with practical skills in geoscience, energy, and environmental analysis. Huawei's AI weather model among top performers in China tests
Meteorological agencies worldwide are racing to develop and roll out new AI tools: the US National Hurricane Center teamed up with Google this month to improve tropical cyclone forecasts, while the premier European forecasting body became the first major prediction center to release a model this year. — Pixabay China's weather agency is testing more than a dozen artificial intelligence models in an effort to enhance its forecasting, with a system from Huawei Technologies Co showing accelerated improvement. In particular, the model was better able to predict the intensity and geographic scope of several heavy rainfall events across southern China in April. Huawei didn't respond to a request for comment. China stands out for the number of models it's publicly testing. The trial scores them based on how well they predict key metrics such as temperature, wind speed, and humidity. Performance scores are updated daily, and detailed monthly evaluation reports are posted online. Of the 14 models being evaluated, other top performers include Fuxi from Fudan University, and Puyun from Hangzhou-based startup Meta Carbon Co. Another is Sphere Fusion Forecast, jointly developed by China's state weather agency, Tsinghua University, and US chipmaker Nvidia Corp. China's weather industry is closely regulated and regarded as a sector with important national security considerations, and only government meteorological agencies are allowed to issue public forecasts.
