Outgoing Indonesian Consul-General: Sibu an excellent model for friendship city ties, regional cooperation

SIBU (April 29): Sibu serves as the best model for fostering international friendship and cooperation, said outgoing Consul-General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching Raden Sigit Witjaksono.
Speaking at his appreciation and farewell ceremony on Sunday night, Raden said the close relationship forged between Sibu and various parties in Indonesia, including friendship city ties, demonstrated how regional cooperation can be effectively carried out.
'Sibu has become my second home and a symbol of the close ties between Indonesia and Sarawak.
'Efforts such as the collaboration between Sibu and Singkawang as well as participation in the Borneo Cultural Festival are examples of successful people-to-people relations,' he said.
He emphasised that initiatives like these should be strengthened to further enhance cross-border ties between Indonesia and Malaysia, particularly in the Borneo region.
Raden also highlighted other achievements throughout his three years of service, including in the areas of economy, education, healthcare, tourism, and infrastructure.
'Various cooperation projects have been initiated. This provides a strong foundation for my successor to elevate these relationships to greater heights,' he said, while expressing hopes the momentum would continue.
He also touched on the potential for closer relations between Sarawak and Kalimantan, especially with the relocation of Indonesia's new capital, Nusantara, to East Kalimantan.
'The development of Nusantara will open up even more opportunities to strengthen ties not only with Sarawak, but with the whole of Borneo, including Sabah and Brunei.'
Raden said the development of diplomatic relations should not only focus on the government and business levels, but must also be enhanced through people-to-people ties, such as through cultural and education programmes as well as student exchanges.
He stressed that strong relations between government (G2G), business (B2B), and the people (people-to-people) are key to long-term success.
'My family and I will always cherish our memories of Sibu. If given the chance, we would love to return here, to our second home,' he said.

Maybank supports CP Group's Altervim with first green loan in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: Maybank is supporting Altervim, the renewable energy arm of Thailand's Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group), as it makes its debut in Malaysia with its first green loan in the country. As the sole bilateral lender, Maybank is financing Altervim's rooftop solar initiative, reflecting the bank's broader commitment to driving the energy transition and sustainability agenda across Asean. In the initial phase, solar panels will be installed across 28 Lotus's Malaysia outlets, delivering up to 20 MW of installed capacity. The project is expected to produce 24.65 million kWh of clean energy annually and reduce 433,958 tonnes of CO₂ emissions over its lifetime. Datuk John Chong, group chief executive officer (CEO) of Global Banking at Maybank, said, "We have a longstanding relationship with the CP Group in the Asean region and a shared vision of accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy. We are proud to support Altervim's foray into Malaysia while contributing to the government's energy transition agenda to increase the renewable energy mix. The financing facility to Altervim is structured according to Maybank's Sustainable Product Framework and adds to the bank's growing portfolio of sustainable finance." As of the first quarter of 2025, Maybank has mobilised RM125.46 billion in sustainable finance across the region, surpassing its original RM80 billion target set for 2025. Borvorn Pienpongpanich, the chief financial officer of Altervim, said the facility marks a key milestone for the company. "This green loan from Maybank represents a strategic partnership that empowers our clean energy vision across the region. Embrace diversity as a strength, not a source of division
KUCHING: Racial diversity should be embraced as a strength to enhance national unity, rather than as a battleground for rivalry or a means to showcase superiority and ego, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. He said that in many other countries, such diversity has led to racial and religious hostility, eventually burdening the nation and negatively affecting the people. 'Unity within our multiracial society is increasingly essential to ensure that Malaysia remains strong amid the current uncertain global geopolitical landscape. 'Never underestimate the potential problems if you are disunited. The geopolitical conditions are so challenging and alarming. The future is never certain. But what we can ensure is a united Malaysia,' he said. Anwar was speaking at the 2025 Sarawak-level Gawai Dayak celebration dinner at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here tonight, which was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
