Dev and Vijay Anand: It takes two to tango

India Today22-04-2025

(NOTE: This article was originally published in the India Today issue dated April 28, 2025)A large number of Indian cinema publications are anecdote-driven or based on salacious behind-the-scenes stories. Occasionally, though, a book is written with such care and attention to detail that it makes you want to drop everything and head straight to the films being discussed—so you can savour what the author saw in them, or disagree with her, or both at the same time. Tanuja Chaturvedi's Hum Dono—a 'guru-dakshina' for Vijay (also known as Goldie) and Dev Anand and the classics they made together—is in this category.advertisementChaturvedi's relationship with the Anand brothers' Navketan Films began in childhood (she got to meet Dev Anand at age five, an overwhelming experience for a girl who had only watched the charismatic star on the big screen), but took a new shape at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) where she learnt to appreciate Vijay Anand's technical proficiency and 'command over every aspect of filmmaking'. This was followed by a professional stint as Dev Anand's chief assistant director.Every facet of this long-lasting bond is represented here. The book has two dominant tones. One is that of the awestruck fan: the child who was rapt while watching films like Guide, as well as the adult who retained her passion for the Navketan flair, the songs, the modern approach to city life. The second tone, more pedantic, is that of the scholar and practitioner who knows a great deal about film history and likes to show off this knowledge, making references and connections that may seem whimsical or pretentious to a casual reader: from Camille Paglia's take on the differences between men and women (in the context of gender roles in the 1961 film Hum Dono) to fleeting invocations of Jungian psychology to a mention of Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood (while discussing the process of adapting R.K. Narayan's The Guide for the screen)And yet, somehow, these two modes come together very well in Chaturvedi's chronological examinations of individual films—from 1957's Nau do Gyarah to 1971's Tere Mere Sapne. Notably, though, the book is presented as a 'Dev and Goldie story', and though the author is a big fan of Dev Anand (the star and the person), she focuses a little more on Vijay Anand's special qualities as a director. This includes analyses of the celebrated song sequences in films like Jewel Thief, Guide and Johny Mera Naam, as well as Goldie's intuitive understanding of framing and camera movement, the gambles he took with narrative structure, and how he incorporated a progressive sensibility into even his early work such as Kala Bazar. To read Hum Dono is to see an egalitarian passion for the medium, unconcerned with the usual labels and hierarchies—popular vs art, serious vs entertaining—that often restrict film analysis.advertisementSubscribe to India Today Magazine

Sitaare Zameen Par Box Office Day 1 Prediction: Aamir Khan starrer gets off to a slow start, earn Rs…

Superstar Aamir Khan's most anticipated film, Sitaare Zameen Par , has finally hit the theaters. Helmed by R.S. Prasanna, this film is a sequel to the 2007 blockbuster, Taare Zameen Par . As per the early reviews, the film is receiving a positive response from audiences and critics, which can be a game-changer for Aamir Khan. Early estimates predict that Sitaare Zameen Par is expected to open with big numbers. Early Prediction For Sitaare Zameen Par As per India Today, Trade analyst Taran Adarsh has mentioned that the film can show its huge growth on the word of mouth. He said, 'The box office run currently depends on word-of-mouth. Since the promotion for the film is very light, now the film's success depends only on Aamir Khan's face value. For the opening weekend, it could be around Rs 30 crore.' He further added, 'Since it's a sequel to Taare Zameen Par, and the 2007 film did really well in its time, I hope Sitaare Zameen Par works well for Aamir. While the film's numbers won't go beyond Taare Zameen Par, it should at least touch a success limit, unlike his recent movies,' Meanwhile, as per early estimates shown by trade website Sacnilk, by this time, Aamir Khan's starrer has earned Rs 1.68 crore (more to be earned). According to Sacnlink, tickets for morning shows worth 1.15 lakhs have been sold for 9542 shows of the Hindi version of Sitare Zameen Par. Did Justin Bieber earn $10 million for Anant Ambani-Radhika Merchant wedding? Event planner says 'even DJs charge $1 mn'

Anant Ambani, son of India's wealthiest billionaire, Mukesh Ambani, and wife Nita Ambani, married Radhika Merchant on July 12, 2024, in Mumbai. Speaking to insiders, like Preston, 'an event designer who has planned weddings like Ivanka Trump's and last year's Ambani wedding', and several others, the report mentioned how the rich have paid top dollar to hire musicians for wedding functions, and Canadian singer Justin Bieber 'reportedly earned $10 million for performing at the Ambani wedding', adding that 'through a representative, Justin Bieber declined to comment'. 'Even the DJs charge a million dollars,' Preston said in the report that mentioned how, increasingly, 'name-brand DJs like Gryffin and Martin Solveig are becoming in demand too, as couples look to turn the wedding afterparty into an Ibiza nightclub'. A post shared by Ambani Family (@ambani_update) The Ambani wedding's opulence and extravagance drew significant attention, with estimates suggesting it cost around $600 million. The couple's outfits were designed by top international fashion houses like Versace and Dolce & Gabbana, as well as leading Indian designers like Tarun Tahiliani and Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla. The couple's pre-wedding celebrations included a three-day party at the Ambani home in Jamnagar, Gujarat, with guests like Ivanka Trump, Hillary Clinton, and Bill Gates. Interestingly, the report added that Preston also designed the 2009 wedding of Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, the daughter of US President Donald Trump. Preston was quoted as saying, 'Luxury weddings have turned theatrical.' Designing high-end weddings where nothing is too much requires creativity, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of the couple's vision. In the same report, Preston shared details of how he brought even the most elaborate wedding visions to life. Preston shared that he recently commissioned a $500,000 holograph of a bride's deceased grandfather to share well wishes, saying that 'for billionaires, if it's exciting, they'll go for it'. He added that clients typically 'hope to show the guests something they've never experienced before'. Preston has reportedly 'built $600,000 structures, rented 10-foot candelabras and ordered custom furniture from Egypt' and typically works with silk flowers for overhead installations, which can cost $25,000 to $75,000. He recalled a time when flowers shipped from the Netherlands for a wedding in Kuwait got stuck at the airport due to an alleged customs issue – and 'he had to send someone with $3,000 or $4,000 cash, as at that point you're willing to do anything'.

Left Right Left actress Aparna Tilak, who's moved to the UAE, says, 'I miss India, I've missed Mumbai'

Aparna Tilak, recognized for her roles in Indian television, has transitioned to a new life in the UAE as a tarot card reader. Aparna Tilak has found a new calling far away from the spotlight. The actor, known for her roles in shows like Left Right Left and Family No.1, now lives in the UAE, where she has become a tarot card reader. While she shifted there a few years back with her husband, she does miss acting here. She says, "I miss India. I've missed Mumbai, well, it's a part of my soul, Mumbai and India." Having spent over a decade in the entertainment industry, Aparna believes acting and energy healing aren't as different as they may seem. 'Acting is an integral part of me. To be a good actor, you must be an empath. You have to be open to receiving and giving emotions. So, I suppose I developed my empathy skills while I was an actor. Now doing tarot and energy work is like a second skin.' Even though she's charted a new path, the desire to reconnect with her roots remains. 'The thought of coming back to Mumbai and doing a short shoot and coming back is, of course, very, very enticing,' she says, adding, 'I may not have done many shows, but whatever I've done, I think I've chosen them out very carefully. I'll continue on the same path.' Lastly, the actress adds, 'Who knows what can happen? Like I always say, I don't believe in miracles. I depend on them. What if I get to do some acting job in the UAE, I would love to do it.'
