Fort Boyard: How France plans to save its game-show fortress

Local France07-04-2025

If you have visited France's Charente-Maritime département, then you may have walked along the coast and noticed the grey hulk of Fort Boyard looming out of the water - located between the Île-d'Aix and the Île d'Oléron.
If you have not seen it in person, you might be familiar with the TV game show of the same name, which has popular French and international versions.
However, the fort now requires serious repairs if it is to stay above the waves.

The fort itself - which has something of a stadium appearance inside - dates back to the 19th century, having served as both a military fort equipped with canons and military personnel to protect France against the British, and as a military prison.

Construction began in the early 1800s under Napoleon, was paused in 1809 and finally completed in 1857.
The fortress was abandoned in 1913, and spent decades gradually falling into disrepair before it was purchased by the Charente Maritime local council in 1961.
TV career
In the early 1990s, the fort became the site for the French TV game show 'Fort Boyard', which involves contestants having to complete challenges to win prize money.
The French version of the show has been running since 1990 and it is still being broadcast on France 2. The 2024 series (the 35th season) had more than two million viewers.
The series has been exported to more than 30 countries including the US, where it ran in 1991 and in a revived version in 2011, and the UK, where it ran from 1998 to 2003. Ford Boyard's creator Jacques Antoine also created the popular, and somewhat similar, British show The Crystal Maze.
Filming for the show takes place inside the fort itself, making it instantly recognisable to millions of TV viewers.
Urgent repairs
Despite still being used for filming, the site is now in urgent need of repair.
The monument is "directly under attack from offshore swells," Matthieu Barbier, the project manager from the Charente-Maritime Departmental Council told
Le Parisien.
"The waves are causing major cracks. Keystones are also starting to loosen. If we do nothing, the fort will be ruined," Barbier warned.
As such, the fort will undergo three and a half years of repairs, which will cost a total of €44 million, and will involve rebuilding the three main protective structures (
ouvrages de protection
). After that, Le Parisien reported there would be a second phase of repairs to 'restore the building to its original state'.

Reportedly, the filming and construction will co-exist, and construction won't start until July (after both the French and foreign versions of the show have wrapped filming.
Construction will be paid largely by the département, with some from ALP (the company that rents the site for filming of the show) and community fundraising.
At the end of 2024, there was a call for donations, which raised €135,000 toward the repairs.
Once the first phase of repairs are complete, Barbier told Le Parisien that the goal will be to open the building to the public.
ALP also said they would consider leaving some set pieces from the TV game show in place, for visitors to discover.
Currently, it is
impossible
for people to visit, but private boat owners can navigate around the monument, and there are some local ferry services that allow visitors to approach the fortress.

French air traffic controllers call summer strike

The UNSA-ICNA union, which is the second largest union representing French air traffic controllers, has filed a strike notice covering Thursday, July 3rd and Friday, July 4th. The union said it was protesting against what it described as a toxic management culture and is calling for "a change of course to reinforce staffing levels, bring technical modernisation projects to fruition, and put operational priorities back at the heart of decision-making". The strike has been called for the beginning of the peak summer season for airlines, with French schools breaking up for the holidays on July 4th this year (or July 5th for those that have Saturday classes). Advertisement It is not yet clear how much disruption the strike action will cause, but it is likely to have at least some effect on flights coming to and from France, and those passing over France. So called 'over flights', which pass over France on their way to another country, may end up being re-routed around France, causing delays. France's civil aviation authority the Direction Générale de l'Aviation Civile will announce in the days leading up to the strike how many flights will need to be cancelled, and then it is up to airlines to decide which ones to axe. Airlines normally try and prioritise long-haul flights and concentrate disruption on short-haul services. Anyone with a flight booked on those days should check with their airline.

Star-packed, Covid-shaped 'Death Stranding 2' drops this week

Kojima has said the follow-up to the meditative 2019 game, in which "Walking Dead" star Norman Reedus played post-apocalyptic deliveryman Sam Porter Bridges, is "about connection". "The social situation was that everyone was divided" when development began on "Death Stranding" in 2016, Kojima said as he presented the new instalment at Los Angeles' Summer Game Fest on June 8. "I said, let's get connected. Right after that, we had the pandemic, and my fiction became a little reality" as people communed over new digital channels, he added. "Death Stranding 2", which drops Thursday, reflects Kojima's hope that people will rediscover analogue ways of being together following the years of isolation, he said. The first "Death Stranding" was a hybrid between a hiking simulator and a classic action game. It was set in a gloomy, fantastical science-fiction universe where characters are aged by the rain and carry foetuses that warn them of dangerous ghostly creatures nearby. Reedus's character Bridges had the job of reconnecting the last outposts of civilisation in a devastated United States following a disaster. This time Bridges's adventures will bring him to Mexico and Australia, in a story that 61-year-old Kojima -- creator of the equally fantastical "Metal Gear" stealth action saga -- said was completely rewritten in light of Covid-19. "I already had the DS2 idea but I had to scratch that off because I experienced the pandemic. So I rewrote," he said. "It's a new connection... I put that in the game system and I want everyone to experience that," Kojima added. French actor Lea Seydoux -- a star of films like James Bond adventure "No Time to Die" or Quentin Tarantino's World War II romp "Inglourious Basterds" -- returns in 3D form alongside Reedus. But new big-name talent is also along for the ride, including American actor Elle Fanning and the likeness of "Mad Max" director George Miller. French singer Woodkid composed the score for the new episode. Kojima Productions, the eponymous studio the developer founded in 2015 after leaving Japanese giant Konami, said in March this year that the first "Death Stranding" had more than 20 million players. And the franchise is broadening out to other media, with a feature film in development with American studio A24 as well as an animated film. Kojima is already turning his bottomless energy to other projects, including a horror game, "OD", co-written with American director Jordan Peele ("Get Out", "Nope") and developed in partnership with Microsoft. He is also returning to the world of spy games in the vein of "Metal Gear" with a new espionage title, "PHYSINT".

Selfridges host Formula 1 at its Corner Shop with multi-sensory homage to the sport

Selfridges has a racing partner ahead of a big movie launch next week. The luxury department store is teaming up with Formula 1 to launch 'F1 75 Years in Motion', turning its Corner Shop location into a multi-sensory homage to the sport. The opening (2pm on 23 June) is two days ahead of Formula 1 The Movie which launches in the UK starring Brad Pitt and includes an appearance by Lewis Hamilton, who played as 'crucial' role in its making, we're told. The Corner Shop activation with be an 'immersive experience' inviting visitors to explore '75 years of high-octane history' through a curated journey, featuring vintage apparel worn by legendary teams and drivers, memorabilia and F1-inspired art and photography tracing the sport's cultural impact. Pieces that will be on sale at the Selfridges Corner Shop include a vintage Benetton x Autopolis jacket, a bold piece from the golden era of early 1990s Formula 1, and a vintage Ferrari x Magnetti Marelli racing jacket -- a rare find due to Ferrari limiting the reissuing of this particular style. As well as rare vintage items, the shop will play host to exclusive F1 75 apparel, as well as art and collectibles from across the sport's history. Formula 1 chief commercial officer Emily Prazer said: 'Fashion has played an integral role in the F1 story over the years, and so launching this exciting first together with Selfridges, a brand with iconic British heritage, felt a natural fit. 'This is more than just a celebration of the sport, but [is] recognition of its cultural significance, where vintage and modern meet to encapsulate our rich, and stylish, story.'
