ANALYSIS: If not WVU, then who wins Big 12 baseball tournament?

Dominion Post22-05-2025

MORGANTOWN — With a move to single elimination and no team ranked above No. 23 in the country, but with six teams in the top 35 of the RPI, the Big 12 baseball tournament is wide open.
The 23rd-ranked Mountaineers have never been in the position as the Big 12's top seed before. As far as that goes, No. 25 Kansas has never been as high as the No. 2 seed it earned this season.
The league has the possibility of putting eight teams into the NCAA tournament, but there's also a chance the league gets no regional hosts.
'Nobody can go full steam and the only thing that matters is winning the (Big 12) tournament, unless you're not going to play in a regional and you have to win it,' WVU head coach Steve Sabins said. 'We have six teams that the only thing that matters is the (conference) tournament, and you have another half that wants to win, but doesn't have to win the tournament. That's the difference, essentially. That's why it can get a little bit wanky in pitching and setting people up.'
With all of that in mind, if the Mountaineers don't sweep their way through the Big 12 tournament, there are a few others in line to hoist the trophy.
If not WVU, then who? Here are your top possibilities:
The Jayhawks (42-14) put together a historic season under Big 12 Coach of the Year Dan Fitzgerald, who has Kansas in line to play in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2014, when it was also a regional host.
Kansas enters the tournament on a five-game winning streak, which includes a sweep of WVU to end the regular season. The Jayhawks' pitching was the story in that series, coming up with two shutouts.
The rest of the season was about Kansas' offense. Two more home runs will give the Jayhawks 100 dingers on the season and Jackson Hauge and Brady Ballinger – a combined 33 home runs – form the league's top one-two punch.
What can go wrong: The Jayhawks may wind up with the toughest quarterfinal draw with a potential matchup against seventh-seeded Oklahoma State. The Cowboys are the defending Big 12 tournament champs, were the preseason favorite to win the Big 12 this season and have won 11 of their last 14 games entering the tournament.
The Cowboys have played in 11 consecutive NCAA tournaments, which is the fourth longest streak in the country.
That was in jeopardy in mid-April, right before the Cowboys started to play like the team that was expected to win the Big 12 at the start of the season. Oklahoma State is 27-22 heading into the tournament, which doesn't look like being worthy of the NCAA tourney, but the Cowboys played the most difficult schedule of any Big 12 team this season. It's that strength of schedule (13th in the nation) that has them in position to play in another NCAA regional.
Also, when you have the league's top MLB draft prospect – Nolan Schubart – anything can happen. Schubart has five home runs and has driven in nine over his last six games. Then there is also starting pitcher Harrison Bodendorf, who went 10-1 with a 2.43 ERA this season.
Need to know: Oklahoma State is 10-5 in the Big 12 tournament since it was moved to Globe Life Field in 2022. No other Big 12 team can match that type of success in the league tournament.
The Horned Frogs (37-17) have the Big 12's top freshman in outfielder Sawyer Strosnider (.360, 10 HR, 50 RBI) and quite possibly the top 1-2 starting pitching combination in Tommy LaPour (7-2, 3.11 ERA) and Mason Brassfield (5-1, 3.59 ERA).
And TCU is 6-2 at Globe Life Field over the past two Big 12 tournaments, including a tournament title in 2023.
At the moment, the Horned Frogs are projected as the lone Big 12 regional host in the NCAA tournament, according to Baseball America and D1 Baseball.
Fitting right in: The Horned Frogs played a great schedule, are accustomed to success in the Big 12 tournament, and when you look at the Big 12 stats, they aren't bad at anything. If WVU doesn't win the Big 12 tournament, then TCU would be a pretty good bet.

Cowboys' Micah Parsons 'Richest-Ever' Contract Update Revealed by Insider

Cowboys' Micah Parsons 'Richest-Ever' Contract Update Revealed by Insider originally appeared on Athlon Sports. This offseason for the Dallas Cowboys, while positive in so many aspects, has been dominated by the Micah Parsons contract "saga," if you want to call it that. Advertisement With some details in place, all that is reportedly left to do is for owner Jerry Jones to pick up the phone and call Micah's agent to get things rolling, which has yet to happen. Training camp has always been the loose deadline in contract talks, and while Parsons did state that he will be in Oxnard, exactly in what capacity is unknown. For most, the waiting on Micah's extension doesn't seem wise with at least $40 million APY being the number, give or take a couple of million. ... Or, better said, let's go with "give a couple of million.'' insider Mike Fisher offers a clued-in prediction for where this is going. Advertisement "It's inevitable and it's almost inarguable,'' Fish reports. "Micah is going to sign the richest-ever non-QB contract in NFL history.'' Fisher was the first to report that Parsons might like a five-year deal in the $200 million range ... with that price tag now possibly rising. Meanwhile, per Bleacher Report, Micah's extension is the most important one to get done. "Parsons skipped voluntary OTAs and rejoined the team for mandatory minicamp," Bleacher Report writes. "According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, his camp and the Cowboys disagree on the length of an extension, though he expects both sides to eventually come to terms on a new deal. Parsons earned the 2021 Defensive Rookie of the Year award, and he's been an All-Pro or Pro Bowler every year in the league. The Cowboys will soon make him the NFL's highest-paid non-quarterback.' Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons (11).Kevin Jairaj-Imagn Images Granted, there are others on the Dallas roster who could get new deals here as well. George Pickens, DaRon Bland, Brandon Aubrey, and Tyler Smith are all deserving ... but it is an easy exercise to put Parsons at the top of the list. Advertisement Such is his value as a player, but now, under Brian Schottenheimer, off the field too, as a new leader of the locker room, Micah getting tied down to a new contract would put the finishing touches on what has been a largely positive and productive offseason. But until that happens, there will be an empty feeling among Cowboys Nation as No. 11 awaits his new deal. Which, for some, should have happened weeks ago. ... and which to Fish is "inevitable and inarguable.'' Related: 'We're Going To Win!' Riley Gaines reacts to ‘phenom' Simone Biles deleting X after feud over transgender athletes

Decorated Olympian gymnast Simone Biles deactivated her X account weeks after her feud with former swimmer and women's sports activist Riley Gaines over a transgender high school softball player spiraled out of control. The 28-year-old's other social media accounts are still active, including her Instagram, which has 12.4 million followers. After noticing Biles' retreat, Gaines, 25, said it was 'sad to see such a phenom go down like this. ' 3 Olympian Simone Biles deleted her X account following her feud over transgender athletics with swimmer Riley Gaines. X / simone_biles '-has an incredibly unpopular and morally indefensible take, gets rightfully ridiculed for it, issues a groveling public apology after unrelenting backlash, deletes account to pretend it never happened,' the former NCAA swimmer for the University of Kentucky wrote on X. In early June, Marissa Rothenberger, a transgender athlete, pitched a shutout to give Minnesota's Champlin Park High School a state championship. The State High School League posted a team photo on social media after the big win — with comments turned off. 'To be expected when your star player is a boy,' Gaines, who competed against transgender University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas in 2022, said. Biles fired back at Gaines' critique. 3 Simone Biles during the Women's Team Final on day four of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games at Ariake Gymnastics Centre on July 27, 2021, in Tokyo, Japan. You should be uplifting the trans community and perhaps finding a way to make sports inclusive OR creating a new avenue where trans feel safe in sports. Maybe a transgender category IN ALL sports!! But instead… You bully them… One things for sure is no one in sports is safe with you around!!!!!' Biles wrote. Biles later apologized for the insults lobbed at Gaines, who is now a conservative commentator and activist for protecting women's sports. 3 Riley Gaines speaks at a news conference following the House of Representatives vote on H.R. 28 – 'Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act' at the US Capitol on Jan. 14, 2025. Getty Images 'I wanted to follow up from my last tweets. I've always believed competitive equity & inclusivity are both essential in sport. The current system doesn't adequately balance these important principles, which often leads to frustration and heated exchanges, and it didn't help for me to get personal with Riley, which I apologize for,' Biles wrote. 'We all want a future for sport that is fair, inclusive, and respectful,' she insisted. But the damage had already been done — and other sports celebrities weighed in, including ex-NASCAR driver Danica Patrick and Biles' former teammate MyKayla Skinner, who accused her of bullying. The exact reason why Biles deleted her X and not her other social media accounts is unclear.

When will LSU baseball resume College World Series game vs. UCLA?

LSU and UCLA will wait until Tuesday to complete Game 8 of the College World Series. Just before the start of the fourth inning on Monday night, the game entered a weather delay. After hours passed, CWS and NCAA officials opted to resume the game on Tuesday. The contest will pick up at 10 a.m. CT and be on televised on ESPN2. Advertisement After three innings, LSU leads 5-3. UCLA scored three runs in the first, but LSU answered, scoring four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Jake Brown started the comeback with an RBI single before Jared Jones launched a three-run homer. After Anthony Eyanson pitched two scoreless innings, LSU added another run with a Luis Hernandez RBI single. With Eyanson settling in, the delay came at a bad time for LSU. Now, the Tigers will be forced to adjust their pitching plans with Eyanson unavailable on Tuesday. LSU certainly wanted more than three innings from its star pitcher, but these things happen when weather gets involved. The LSU-UCLA loser will be in a tough spot. It will face a quick turnaround to play Arkansas in an elimination game later in the day.
