Chief Minister to officiate Asean Travel Exchange June 19

Kota Kinabalu: Preparations are underway for Sabah to host the two-day Asean Travel Exchange (ATE) 2025 this month, says State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew. Basically, ATE 2025 is a premier Business 2 Business (B2B) networking event in Sabah, connecting travel trade sellers and regional buyers to foster partnerships and collaborations on June 19 and 20. The Minister said the State Government through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment (KePKAS) will host this inaugural mega tourism event at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC). Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has been invited to officiate at the opening ceremony on June 19. Liew said KePKAS supports the proposal for four organisations to establish strategic partnership with Sabah Tourism Board (STB) in organising ATE 2025. They are the Asean Tourism Association (Aseanta), Federation of Asean Travel Associations (Fata), Malaysian Association of Tour & Travel Agents (Matta), and AirAsia Group. Asean has 10 member countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. For ATE 2025, the target audience will be made up of tour operators, travel agents, hoteliers, homestay operators, product owners, and decision-makers from the industry stakeholders. 'As we gear up for the upcoming event, I have been informed by the President of Fata (Datuk Tan Kok Liang) that 354 delegates from 17 countries have already confirmed their participation. They comprise 125 sellers and 229 buyers,' said Liew after a courtesy call by a delegation from the organisers, recently. According to Tan, seller countries include Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Brunei, and Cambodia, with Malaysia leading the list at 88 sellers. 'On the buyers' side, top participating countries include the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, and Thailand. This strong regional presence underscores growing international interest in Malaysia's tourism offerings, particularly in Sabah, which continues to gain traction as a vibrant and strategic tourism hub in the region,' he said in his briefing for the Minister. Sabah chamber bridges cultural and economic exchange with Zhang Clan delegation

The new building is not only a milestone for Zhang clan members in Sabah, but also a powerful symbol of the thriving development of Zhang clan culture abroad. He emphasized that since its founding, the Sabah China Chamber of Commerce has worked to serve as a vital platform for economic and cultural collaboration between Sabah and China. He noted that Zhang clan culture, as a brilliant gem of traditional Chinese heritage, reflects values such as solidarity, mutual support and perseverance — all of which align with the Chamber's philosophy of cooperative and mutually beneficial growth. 'This meeting is both a joyful reunion and a new beginning for deeper cooperation,' he said. 'Under the outstanding leadership of President Zhang Huaxia, we believe the grand opening of the Sabah Zhang Clan Association's new building will serve as a launchpad for broader and more in-depth collaborations — whether in cultural heritage, business, or community engagement — helping to promote Chinese traditional values while advancing prosperity on both sides.' Liew recalled that years ago, he was honored to attend a major Zhang Clan Association celebration in China at the invitation of Zhang. He said this legendary tale of fraternity and righteousness remains a powerful reminder of the deep and cherished friendship between himself, Zhang, and all Zhang clan members. M'sia exploring new markets for palm oil amid global conflicts, says Johari

(Bernama pic) KOTA BHARU: The government is exploring new markets for palm oil to reduce the nation's reliance on major exporting markets affected by geopolitical conflicts. Plantation and commodities minister Johari Ghani said the ongoing Israel-Iran crisis and the Russia-Ukraine conflict have disrupted export shipments to certain zones. 'Malaysia currently exports goods worth RM186 billion annually to global markets, including palm oil, but part of these markets are now considered high-risk due to armed conflicts. 'As such, we are exploring new markets, namely, countries that have yet to purchase Malaysian palm oil or cooking oil. This is crucial to ensure that our export levels remain stable,' he said after a programme at the Mara polytechnic college here today. Johari said Malaysia is currently trading with nearly 80 nations, with plans to expand its reach even further. He urged plantation operators and smallholders to work closely with the government to ensure the resilience of the national commodities sector on the global stage. Advertisement 'The European market is increasingly emphasising environmental sustainability and biodiversity-friendly practices in palm oil procurement. 'To enter their markets, we must prove that our plantations meet their standards in complying with sustainability principles and preserve biodiversity,' he said. Foreign claims dismissed, Sabah's sovereignty remains intact
KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia's success in fending off foreign claims over Sabah reaffirms the state's sovereignty under the Federation of Malaysia and offers assurance and relief to the people of Sabah, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He expressed gratitude to the federal government and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the government's commitment to protecting the rights and sovereignty of the state. He said that the state government greatly values the various forms of assistance and initiatives provided by the federal government, particularly in areas such as infrastructure, healthcare, education, and security. 'The strong ties and close cooperation with the federal government will continue to be upheld to ensure that Sabah is not left behind in national development,' he said. Hajiji said this in his address at the 2025 Sabah State Honours and Awards investiture ceremony held at Istana Seri Kinabalu today, where 60 individuals were conferred state honours, awards and medals by the Yang Dipertua Negeri of Sabah, Tun Musa Aman. Hajiji also gave his assurance that the implementation of inclusive and comprehensive development policies under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) roadmap will be further enhanced as part of ongoing efforts to ensure the progress and well-being of Sabahans. He said that since its introduction, the road map has had a significant impact, particularly in areas such as economic recovery, investment, agriculture, human capital development, and the overall well-being of the people. He added that the state government is focusing on the development of the agricultural sector, which plays a crucial role in ensuring food security in Sabah, noting that the key initiatives include the establishment of the Sabah Padi and Rice Board (LPBS) and the launch of the Paddy Crop Takaful Scheme (STTP), aimed at raising the state's rice self-sufficiency level from the current 24 per cent to 60 per cent by 2030. Hajiji also said the state government has approved the establishment of the Sabah TVET Council to coordinate and monitor technical and vocational education and training in line with current industry needs. 'We want to ensure that Sabah's youth are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to the development of the state and the nation,' he added.
