Vintage car, banknotes and pocket watches: Lifetime collection of former Guinness boss to be auctioned

The collection of Arthur Livingstone (93), a polymath and former head of Guinness Overseas, is to be auctioned by Niall Mullen at Gormleys Auctions.
Sligo man Mr Livingstone has had a lifelong interest in mechanical objects and amassed a collection of curios as well as the knowledge to maintain them.
As a child, he repaired a long-defunct grandmother clock in his family home in Coolaney, making the cords needed out of hemp.
He became renowned for his skill throughout the community, with neighbours bringing him broken objects such as gramophones to fix when he was on school leave.
A local schoolteacher recognised his talent, and encouraged his parents to pursue his education.
Mr Livingstone developed a love of languages, picking up 14 and developing fluency in eight of them.
Among his collection of pocket watches is a Charles Oudin Eleve De Brevete solid silver pocket watch, valued at between €1,000 and €2,000.
The auction also features a large collection of unusual vintage scientific equipment, several antique guns including a boxed pair of duelling pistols, atlases and informational books, over 300 walking sticks, and the furniture from Mr Livingstone's home, Cuiltybar House in Coolaney.
His banknote collection includes three mint first issue Lady Lavery notes, signed and dated from 1928, with the £1 valued between €40-€800, and the £10 valued from €600-€1,000.
Among his vintage and antique vehicles are a Briggs & Stratton Swift Flyer, a motorised cycle car from the early 20th century, valued at €5,000-€10,000, a cherry-red 1984 Citroen 2CV 6 Special with a starting price of €8,000, and a rare right-hand drive bronze 1971 Citroen DS21, valued at between €40,000 and €45,000.

Mr Livingstone spent all his life working for the Guinness Brewery, becoming managing director of Guinness Overseas when the company expanded abroad in the 60s.
This brought him and his wife Zoe to Nigeria in the early 1960s, and later to Malaysia, Jamaica and Brazil.
Being a compulsive collector of curiosities and artefacts wherever he went, his collection is a reflection of a long and interesting life.
The Livingstone collection can be viewed at Cuiltybar House until tomorrow, June 17.
The online sale will run from 5.30pm tomorrow until Wednesday, June 18.
Mr Livingstone is also selling his house and lands through Sligo agents REA McCarrick & Sons.

Iran Considers Closure of Strait of Hormuz

Israa Farhan Iran may move to close the strategic Strait of Hormuz following preliminary approval by its parliament, though final authorization is still pending from the country's Supreme National Security Council, according to Iranian state media. The decision, if implemented, would mark a significant escalation in regional tensions, particularly after the recent US airstrike targeting Iranian nuclear facilities. While Iran's parliament has reportedly agreed in principle to the closure, official confirmation from top national security authorities has yet to be issued. State-run Press TV reported on Sunday that the move to shut the strait remains contingent upon a final green light from the Supreme National Security Council. The announcement follows rising regional instability and growing speculation about Iran's possible retaliation. Senior Iranian lawmaker and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Esmail Kowsari stated that closing the strait remains a viable option under active consideration. According to comments carried by the Young Journalists Club, he confirmed that the decision will be made if necessary, with all strategic responses still on the table. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, through which approximately 20 percent of global oil and gas exports transit. Located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, the narrow passage is vital for the export of hydrocarbons from key producers such as Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, the UAE, and Iran itself. Any disruption to this vital corridor would pose serious risks to international energy markets and could trigger broader geopolitical conflict. Historically, the strait has been a flashpoint during periods of tension between Iran and the United States and its allies. The renewed debate over the strait's status emerged just hours after the US carried out airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear sites early Sunday morning. The strikes prompted strong condemnation from Tehran and warnings of serious strategic consequences. Iran has previously threatened to block the strait in response to sanctions or military aggression, though it has never followed through on the threat. However, analysts warn that a full closure would likely provoke an immediate and far-reaching military and economic crisis in the Gulf region and beyond. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean News 3 Killed in Shooting Attack in Thailand

Oman To Impose First Personal Income Tax For High Earners, Effective January 2028

Oman has officially enacted its first Personal Income Tax Law, with implementation set for January 1, 2028, marking a historic policy shift aimed at fiscal diversification and economic sustainability under Vision 2040 . The new law, issued by Royal Decree No. 56/2025 by Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, will apply a 5% tax rate on individuals earning over OMR 42,000 annually. This high exemption threshold means approximately 99% of Oman's population will not be affected, according to the Tax Authority. Comprising 76 articles across 16 chapters, the law will target specific income sources while integrating social exemptions—such as education, housing, healthcare, zakat, and donations—to ensure fairness and social justice. The move complements Oman's long-term fiscal consolidation strategy and aims to increase non-oil revenues to 18% of GDP by 2040. Enforcement Date : January 1, 2028 : January 1, 2028 Tax Rate : 5% : 5% Exemption Threshold : OMR 42,000 per year : OMR 42,000 per year Impact : Only top 1% of earners affected : Only top 1% of earners affected Goals : Revenue diversification, fiscal stability, improved credit ratings : Revenue diversification, fiscal stability, improved credit ratings Social Protection: Revenue to support Oman's social protection system The law's executive regulations will be issued within a year of publication in the Official Gazette. The Tax Authority is also deploying an electronic tax compliance system, integrating government databases to ensure accuracy in declarations and promote voluntary compliance. Karima Mubarak Al Saadi, Director of the Personal Income Tax Project, noted that training, infrastructure, and legal frameworks are already in place. Educational guides for individuals and businesses will be rolled out in phases ahead of the law's implementation. Last year, Oman collected OMR 1.4 billion from corporate, VAT, and selective taxes. The personal income tax is expected to complement these revenues and bolster fiscal credibility, enhancing Oman's appeal to global investors. This landmark policy comes amid a regional trend of Gulf economies moving toward diversified revenue models as they reduce dependency on oil.
