Timbaland sparks debate as he signs an AI artist to his label
Grammy-award-winning American producer Timbaland has caused a stir with his decision to sign an AI artist to his record label.
The artist is called TaTa, and this move has been met with vast opposition.
The growing rise of AI will see most vocations and industries either succumb to this development or learn to use it somehow.
Timbaland describes TaTa as 'a living, learning, autonomous music artist built with AI.
He stressed that TaTa is more than just an avatar or animated character. He's even pioneering a genre around his new artist, something he calls A-pop, along with a new company to manage his artificially created exploits.
He probably will not refrain from collaborating with human beings. He has quite a roster of talents that he has helped shape. People like Missy Elliot, Aaliyah, Justin Timberlake, and Keri Hilson. He unearthed a lot of those talents himself.
The idea with the AI artist TaTa will be to blend human creativity with digital advancements.
Timbaland has aligned himself with an AI music company called Suno, an entity that has endured quite a bit of turmoil as a result of copyright infringement and concerns.
The quirky producer who helped pioneer R&B and hip hop from Virginia remains focused on this endeavour, bearing fruit. South Africans also owe him a lot as his famous stem, which he allowed to be used for free, is what built our nation's second anthem, Sister Bethina.
The industry, however, is not enjoying this idea. Famed American producer and long-time collaborator of Jay-Z, Young Guru, has perhaps been the loudest voice against this. He submitted that AI compromises the authenticity and human-generated passion that good music relies on.
'Human expression can never be reduced to this,' Young Guru said in a social media post.
Rapper Joyner Lucas also voiced his concerns, along with rapper Uncle Murda, and even British DJ Shy FX views this approach as flawed.
The enterprising maestro is still determined to make this work.
'I'm not just producing tracks anymore. I'm producing systems, stories, and stars from scratch,' he explained in an interview.
He is of the firm belief that AI will change the way music is made for the better. Streamlining the process and making things easier and quicker for producers and musicians.
The music industry might be on the precipice of dramatic change. One need only observe the impact of social media has on the way music is released and engaged with. Timbaland is gearing up to relase TaTa's debut single in the months to come.

'I'm half white!': Trevor Noah mocks refugees, 'genocide'
Trevor Noah has made light of claims South Africa is promoting a 'white genocide', resulting in an influx of 'refugees' in the US. The Soweto-born comedian was speaking in the latest episode of his Spotify What, Now? Podcast. Trevor was joined by longtime pals Anele Mdoda and Sizwe Dhlomo. During the episode, Trevor Noah and his friends caught up on news about their lives, including Anele's recent engagement, upcoming wedding and the possibility of Sizwe settling down. The trio played a game called 'If I ruled the world', in which they laughed off each other's make-believe scenarios. During the game, Trevor was particularly amused at white South Africans who had fled the country to the US under the guise of being 'persecuted'. Trevor jokingly said: 'South Africans have changed the defination of refugees. Because before this, refugees only went to another country because they had to.' He continued: 'Normally, refugees have baggage, not luggage. This is very different.' Trevor Noah also joked about leaving South Africa too. He told his pals: 'There is a white genocide in this country. I'm half white. I had to choose!' Trevor Noah splits his time between South Africa and the US, in which he became a naturalisd citizen in 2020. These fun Highveld festivals are warming up the region this winter
It may be winter, but these Highveld festivals radiate creativity and warmth. Spanning Gauteng and the Free State, events are taking place across the colder months. There's an emphasis on the arts across both provinces, though you'll also find lots of delicious food on the menu. There's even one that's all about champagne and chocolate… The event programmes are varied, featuring top local performers, as well as a couple of GRAMMY winners. Whether you're for thought-provoking talks or dancing the night away, you can pick and choose from these four festivals. One of a series in events at Constitution Hill, Basha Uhuru Creative Week runs next week. The four-day festival will host print exhibitions, poetry readings and film screenings. Then there's an amapiano showcase and a market for creative brands. A big focus is the industry workshops that span multiple art disciplines. Topics include poetry, hemp and cannabis, and the business of fashion. In addition to performances and exhibitions, there's a series of hands-on workshops.
