The 4 biggest revelations from media mogul Barry Diller's new memoir

The 4 biggest revelations from media mogul Barry Diller's new memoir

Barry Diller has seen nearly every evolution of the entertainment business.
He pioneered the 'Movie of the Week' at ABC, instituted the miniseries, embraced home video and propelled reality TV with the inception of 'Cops' at Fox.
Then, after years of running major studios, Diller pivoted to QVC, latching onto the idea that screens could be two-way conversations with consumers — this later led to his investment in online companies Expedia, Match.com and Tinder.
Diller, 83, expands on his life and career decisions in his new memoir, 'Who Knew,' out Tuesday. In it, Diller comes out as gay, describes his longtime marriage with fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg and details his many business interactions over the years with fellow media titans, including Rupert Murdoch, Michael Eisner (whom he mentored), Brian Roberts and Sumner Redstone.
Diller credits a 'fake it until you make it' mentality for his career, which began in the mailroom of talent agency William Morris. He then had a swift rise at ABC before becoming the 32-year-old chief executive and chairman of Paramount Pictures, a role he held for 10 years before jumping to Fox. Aside from a short-lived bid for Paramount Global last year, he's been relatively absent from the entertainment industry since stepping down as chairman of Live Nation Entertainment in 2010.
Today, he spends months sailing on his schooner, Eos, with Von Furstenberg and one of their cloned Jack Russell terriers (they have five), while still serving as chairman of digital media company IAC.
'The most of it was building, always building,' Diller writes of his career. 'And even better than that was being lucky enough to let a family build me into something resembling a person.'
Here are four takeaways from the memoir.
Diller grew up in Beverly Hills, where his father's construction supply family business benefited from Southern California's post-World War II boom in housing. But his home life was chaotic.
'My parents separated often and came a day short of divorce several times before I was ten,' he writes. 'My brother was a drug addict by age 13; and I was a sexually confused holder of secrets from the age of 11.'
There were silent Sunday night dinners at restaurants and essentially no contact with any extended relatives.
One particularly traumatizing childhood experience came when Diller was sent to sleepaway camp at age 7. He had attended that particular camp before when he was 4 — a few years below the minimum age requirement — but spent that summer living with the camp owners, 'cozied into the structure of a real family unit,' he writes. At 7, Diller was placed with the rest of the campers and said he felt isolated and alone.
When he called his mother, begging her to pick him up, she told him she'd come immediately. He waited all day and she never showed up.
'I gave up on my mother that night. There would be no rescue,' he writes. 'As I walked down that driveway back to the life of the camp, I buried that fear and resolved never to trust anyone other than myself again. That summer at camp, I cemented myself shut.'
Bluhdorn, the head of massive conglomerate Gulf+Western Industries, purchased Paramount Pictures in 1966. One day, Bluhdorn wanted to negotiate with someone from ABC's programming department. Leonard Goldberg, who was head of programming at the time, was unavailable, so Diller, who worked for him, was sent to meet Bluhdorn for the first time.
The two clashed on a deal Bluhdorn had made with ABC to buy more than 100 Paramount movies to air on television, many of which Diller said were duds. Diller, then 23, bluffed a 'big boy voice' and pushed back, resulting in an amended deal for the rights of new Paramount films that were better than the old ones, landing 'The Godfather' and 'Love Story' for ABC.
It would be the beginning of Diller's long relationship with Bluhdorn, which led to him becoming chairman of Paramount.
'He liked me because I was probably the only person in the entertainment business, probably in any business at this time in his ginormous career, who didn't tell him exactly what he wanted to hear,' Diller writes.
After seven years at Fox, Diller approached Murdoch to ask to become a partner in the enterprise.
Diller writes that Murdoch said he would think about it but came back a few days later and said, 'There's really only one principal in this company. I mean, you make decisions, and that's been fine for me and for you. But this is a family company, and you're not a member.'
Their relationship slowly deteriorated after that, and Diller resigned as chairman and CEO in 1992. He writes that he has 'not had a harsh word with Rupert since.'
In the early 1990s, Steve Jobs showed Diller a few scenes from the movie 'Toy Story.' After the screening, he asked Diller to join the board of Pixar, which Jobs had recently acquired.
Diller, by his own admission, 'didn't get any of the charm of 'Toy Story'' and had never been interested in animation. He said he didn't want to make any commitments in the aftermath of his departure from Fox before eventually giving Jobs a firm no.
'I completely underestimated the company and the man,' Diller writes. 'What a dunce.'

Machine Gun Kelly Explains the Meaning of the Unique Name He and Megan Fox Gave Their Baby

THE RUNDOWN On Friday, Machine Gun Kelly made an appearance on Today, where he opened up about raising his daughter with Megan Fox. The musical artist recently shared the baby's name, Saga Blade, and he explained the meaning behind the words for himself and Fox. In his explanation, MGK seemed to refer to Fox's experiencing pregnancy loss, which she was quite open about before and after revealing she was expecting. 'Her journey, the five years of her culmination of coming, disappearing, coming back again, disappearing, coming back again, she's an epic story and that's what Saga means,' said Kelly. 'I'm also of Norwegian heritage and so that's a Nordic goddess of storytelling and I think she has a storytelling future ahead of her. Megan's a great mom and just killing it and I'm so excited.' In a video posted earlier this week, Kelly can be seen rocking Saga's baby chair while serenading her. The infant can't be seen on camera. In the caption, he wrote, 'Saga Blade Fox-Baker ❤️‍🔥 thank you for the ultimate gift @meganfox.' Fox's poetry book, Pretty Boys Are Poisonous, touched on her miscarriages. In 2023, Fox shared in an interview with WWD that she had an ectopic pregnancy while in a relationship with Kelly, saying, 'I've had other things that I'm not going to say because God forbid the world will be in an uproar. But I've been through other similar issues, but not with someone who I was so in love with.' Fox has three other children with ex-husband Brian Austin Green, Noah, Bodhi, and Journey. MGK shares his teen daughter, Casie, with his former partner, Emma Cannon. Fox and Kelly dated for five years and were engaged before splitting late last year, shortly after announcing they were expecting.

Waller joined "The Zac Clark Show," where he discussed that he would have made $32 million over the next three seasons, had he remained in the league. Even worse is he also reveals he had to pay the Giants money to actually walk away from his contract. "The next three years would have been like $32 million ... And I had to write a check to walk away. I had to write $750,000 in bonus money to the Giants to walk away. Success and validation and s*** like that took the forefront. I poured it all into making football work ... this is another opportunity for me to like say this is the life that I'm choosing I want to live like. He would follow that up with another 1,196 yards and nine touchdowns in 2020, leading to his lone Pro Bowl nod. Waller ended his eight-season career in the NFL with 4,124 yards, 20 touchdowns, 350 receptions, and an 11.8 yards per catch average. Though he had an up-and-down start to his professional career, including being suspended for the 2017 season for violating the substance-abuse policy, Waller was considered to be a top tight end in the NFL. Interestingly, he began his career as a wide receiver, but had trouble making headway on a stacked Ravens squad. Ravens head coach John Harbaugh announced in 2016 that Waller would convert to the tight end position, leading to his resurgence as a pass catcher. Following his shock retirement from the NFL, Waller released a song called "Who Knew," which is reportedly about his ex-wife, WNBA star Kelsey Plum. All the ‘Abbott Elementary' Season 4 Emmy predictions, including those ‘Sunny' guest stars

Abbott Elementary Season 4 has received straight A's from TV critics, earning a 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. But will that perfect score translate to the 2025 Emmys? To date, ABC's school-set mockumentary has been nominated for 24 Emmys and won four: Best Comedy Actress for Quinta Brunson as Janine Teagues (2023), Best Comedy Supporting Actress for Sheryl Lee Ralph as Barbara Howard (2022), Best Comedy Writing for Brunson for the pilot (2022), and Best Comedy Casting (2022). It's still waiting on that coveted victory for Best Comedy Series, for which it has been nominated for each of its first three seasons. Let's take a look at Abbott's strongest Emmy chances for Season 4, category by category. More from GoldDerby Ryan Murphy and the JFK Jr.-Carolyn Bessette controversy, explained: Why 'American Love Story' Instagram post got so much hate Everything to know about 'The Pitt' Season 2 'The Daily Show' leads Best Talk Series Emmy odds amid outrage over the low number of available slots As usual, there will be eight slots for this series race, and Abbott Elementary is sitting pretty in fifth place. (Hacks, The Studio, Only Murders in the Building, and The Bear are above it.) The fact that Abbott is one of the funniest shows in contention should work in its benefit, especially given the backlash that a certain kitchen dramedy has received over the years. It's a comedy category, after all. However, Abbott has something going against it that may not be recoverable: it airs on broadcast. Emmy voters have notoriously shunned the Big Four networks (ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC) in recent years, and instead have embraced shiny new streamers and reliable pay-cable channels. It has been more than a decade since ABC's Modern Family completed its five-year comedy series streak in 2014, and Fox's 24 was the last drama series to prevail, way back in 2006. Gilbert Flores/Variety via Getty Images Quinta Brunson won this award in 2023, the year that Hacks was on hiatus. That's important to note because the other two times she was nominated for Best Comedy Actress, in 2022 and 2024, she was beaten by Hacks star Jean Smart. Smart is back again this year and is Gold Derby's frontrunner to prevail, while Ayo Edebiri (The Bear) sits in second place, and Brunson rounds out the top three. There will only be five slots in this category, due to a lower-than-usual number of submissions. One of the throughlines of Season 4 was the romantic relationship between Janine and Tyler James Williams' Gregory Eddie, but it never came at the expense of other characters. "Quinta never wanted this to be the Gregory and Janine show," co-showrunner and executive producer Justin Halpern told Gold Derby "She wanted that to be, certainly, a storyline in it, and maybe it's even a reason why some people are watching it, but it wasn't the center that the show rotated around." Gold Derby predicts that Sheryl Lee Ralph and Janelle James (Ava Coleman) will reap nominations for the fourth time in a row, as they both rank within the seven expected nomination slots. A third supporting actress, Lisa Ann Walter (Melissa Schemmenti), is in 30th place. Ralph surprisingly won this category in 2022, despite the potential vote-split from her costar, and memorably sang "Endangered Species" during her acceptance speech. Her storylines in Season 4 included putting on a Christmas pageant, teaching Charlie Day's It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia character how to read, and stressing out about growing old. As for James, Season 4 was undeniably "the season of Ava," co-showrunner and executive producer Patrick Schumacker told Gold Derby. The feisty principal fell on the sword for the rest of the school following an audit, and was fired from her position. "They kind of threw everything at me this season and I feel like I delivered," the actress proudly told us. In addition, Ava experienced a mature romance with IT guy O'Shon (Matthew Law), and reunited with her estranged father, Frank (Keith David). If voters are watching, James is undoubtedly an Emmy threat in her Best Comedy Supporting Actress category. Tyler James Williams is in fifth place for an Emmy nomination, which would be his fourth overall. He won the Golden Globe in 2023 and declared at the podium, "I pray that this is a win for Gregory Eddie [and] that we may understand that his story is just as important as all of the other stories that have to be told." One of the actor's most memorable moments in Season 4 was stepping behind the camera as a director for "The Science Fair" episode. "I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity," Williams told Gold Derby. "There was just something about this show that was different. It feels very close to me, like family." Elsewhere in the Best Comedy Supporting Actor category, Chris Perfetti (Jacob Hill) is in 15th place, and William Stanford Davis (Mr. Johnson) is in 33nd place; both are looking for their first career nominations. As Davis revealed to Gold Derby, "What I really love about [Mr. Johnson] is his mystery. You don't know what he's going to do next, and you don't know what his experiences are. ... He feels like he's the smartest guy there." One opportunity for Abbott Elementary to experience an Emmy boost would be in the guest categories. To date, the only day player to receive a bid was Taraji P. Henson as Vanetta Teagues, Janine's estranged mother, in 2023. Henson was predicted to win, but lost to Judith Light (Poker Face). Disney/Gilles Mingasson Season 4 guest stars in contention for Emmys this year are Keith David as Frank Coleman for "The Science Fair," Talia Shire as Melissa's mother, Teresa Schemmenti, for "Winter Break," plus four It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia cast members for the cross-over "Volunteers" episode: Charlie Day as Charlie, Danny DeVito as Frank, Rob McElhenney as Mac, and Kaitlin Olson as Dee. (Glenn Howerton as Dennis also appeared, but was not submitted for Emmy consideration.) Olson currently enjoys the strongest Emmy odds, in 15th place for Best Comedy Guest Actress, while Day is in 20th place for Best Comedy Guest Actor. Abbott Elementary submitted three directors on this year's Emmy ballot: Jennifer Celotta for "Strike," Jaime Eliezer Karas for "Audit," and Randall Einhorn for "Please Touch Museum," the Season 4 finale. "As directors, all we're ever doing is serving the scripts," Einhorn shared with Gold Derby. He said that the mockumentary comedy has "maintained a consistent style," though he always tries to "find new and interesting ways to tell our story." Einhorn received the only directing nomination so far for Abbott, for "Party" in 2024, which lost to The Bear's "Fishes." The show has received two Emmy nominations for writing, both for Brunson: "Pilot" (which won in 2022) and "Career Day" (which lost to Hacks' "Bulletproof" in 2024). This year, it's only on the ballot once for writing, for the Season 4 premiere, "Back to School," written by — who else? — Brunson. It's a savvy strategy to only submit one episode for contention, so as not to split the vote. Abbott Elementary is a collaborative effort and that's reflected in its Emmy submissions, where artisans are eligible in 10 below-the-line races: casting, cinematography ("Karaoke"), costumes ("Costume Contest"), hairstyling ("100th Day of School"), makeup ("Ava Fest: Tokyo Drift"), music supervision ("Karaoke"), picture editing ("Karaoke" and "Ringworm"), production design ("Karaoke"), sound editing ("Please Touch Museum"), and sound mixing ("Please Touch Museum"). Besides its casting victory in 2002, the comedy has also been nominated for casting in 2023 and 2024, plus hairstyling in 2023 and 2024. There's no reason to think Abbott won't be adding more craft bids to its tally in 2025, particularly after fans and critics agreed that Season 4 schooled the competition.
