Mumbra train tragedy: Call for automated doors, more trains after at least 4 dead due to overcrowding
Speaking to the media, Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Swapnil Nila said that the guard of the Kasara-bound train reported at 9.30 am that some injured passengers were lying along the tracks near the control room at CSMT. He, however, did not know from which train the passengers had fallen.
The Central Railway officials said that prima facie, the passengers on the footboard of the down train towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) collided with those standing on the footboard of a Kasara-bound train headed in the opposite direction on the parallel track.
Mumbai: At least four passengers died, whereas over a dozen suffered injuries after falling off a crowded moving train near Mumbra station in Thane district Monday morning. Visiting the site later, Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde said that at least five people died in the incident even as the police said four people died. At least a dozen persons injured in the incident are now under treatment at different hospitals in Mumbra and Thane.
'It is not a collision of trains. People travelling on the footboard of a local train towards Kasara and those similarly travelling on a train going towards CSMT collided with each other and fell,' he said. 'The distance between the two trains was 1.5-2 metres, but at curves, a slight tilt happens, which could have been another reason for the incident.'
According to railway officials, the train was overcrowded, and hence, people stood on footboards. A police team and railway officials immediately rushed to the spot, and an investigation is currently underway.
How to prevent such accidents
The railways, soon after the incident, decided to provide automated doors for all new and existing Mumbai suburban train rakes shortly, Swapnil Nila told the media.
Currently, the Mumbai suburban trains have open doors. Many passengers during peak hours stand on the footboard.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said to the media, 'The incident in which a total of eight passengers fell from a local train between the Diva and Mumbra stations, resulting in some fatalities, is extremely unfortunate. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the deceased.'
He added: 'The local administration is coordinating efforts on the ground. I pray to god for the swift recovery of the injured. The railway department has initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident.'
Speaking to the media, MP Shrikant Shinde acknowledged that many people now lived in Kalyan on the Dombivali side. With that, he said, 'The availability of trains needs to go up and should be done quickly.'
There have been sharp political reactions to the incident.
Congress state president Harshwardhan Sapkal, in a statement to the media, said, 'These deaths are not by accident. These people became victims at the hands of the government. For the past 11 years, the people of Maharashtra and Mumbai have been listening to empty promises about improved infrastructure and smoother commutes for Mumbaikars.'
'In the name of development and facilities, it has become a game of awarding tenders and collecting commissions. The ruling officials and contractors have grown richer through this nexus, while ordinary citizens are paying for this corruption with their lives.'
Shiv Sena UBT and NCP(SP) have expressed anguish over the incident, too. Sharad Pawar, in an X post, said that the growing population of Mumbai needed appropriate facilities.
'On an average 6-7 people die every day after falling off from local trains. It is not right to blame the passengers for this incident. Central Railway should plan well and take timely action against this. The trains on important routes should be increased. Fitting automated doors on trains should be done timely,' wrote Sharad Pawar.

Land dispute case: Telangana HC reserves order on A Revanth's plea to quash 2016 FIR; order reserved till July 18
HYDERABAD: Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya of the Telangana high court on Friday reserved orders to July 18 on a plea filed by former Congress MP and chief minister A Revanth Reddy seeking quashing of a 2016 FIR registered against him at the Gachibowli police station. The case was filed based on a complaint by N Peddi Raju, president of the Razole Constituency SC Cooperative Housing Society, alleging trespass and caste-based abuse during a land dispute in Gopanapalli, Rangareddy district. The matter is pending before a special court under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. According to the FIR, Peddi Raju claimed Revanth's brother Kondal Reddy and one E Laxmaiah forcibly entered around two acres of land claimed by the society, demolished a compound wall and other structures, and abused him in the name of caste-allegedly at Revanth's behest. The 2019 chargesheet noted that though Raju claimed purchase of land for the society, the sellers lacked clear title. Meanwhile, Kondal Reddy claimed to have purchased 31 acres in the same survey number in 2005, registered in his name. The chargesheet concluded that the accused trespassed into land in possession of the society and carried out the demolition. Counsel Nimma Narayana, appearing for Peddi Raju, argued: "Though the chargesheet was filed five years ago, charges have not been framed, and crucial provisions under the Atrocities Act were left out." He reiterated that Kondal Reddy used caste abuse, allegedly on Revanth's instructions. The judge reserved her orders and posted the case to July 18.

Tejasvee appointed director of bank controlled by BJP leader
Mumbai: Former corporator and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Tejasvee Ghosalkar has been appointed as a director of the Mumbai District Central Cooperative Bank (MDCCB), which is controlled by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pravin Darekar. The appointment ahead of the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) election has triggered speculations about her quitting the Shiv Sena (UBT) and joining the BJP. The position had been vacant since the murder of her husband and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Abhishek Ghosalkar on February 8 last year, allegedly by a self-styled social worker Mauris Noronha alias Maurisbhai. Tejasvee Ghosalkar last month resigned as the vibhag pramukh of Shiv Sena (UBT) in the Dahisar assembly segment, alleging non-cooperation by the party's regional chief and coordinator. The move fuelled speculation that she might leave the party and join the BJP. Her father-in-law and deputy leader of Shiv Sena (UBT) Vinod Ghosalkar subsequently met party chief Uddhav Thackeray and accused the BJP and Shinde-led Shiv Sena of pressuring her to leave the party. With Tejasvee's appointment now as a director of MDCCB, political circles are abuzz about the move being part of the BJP's strategy to gain control over the BMC by luring Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders into its fold. The BJP believes that Tejasvee's induction would help them win big from Dahisar in the upcoming BMC election. Tejasvee has so far not made any official announcement regarding quitting the Shiv Sena (UBT). Darekar said that the bank had taken the decision to induct Tejasvee in good faith, following the unfortunate death of Abhishek Ghosalkar. The decision was taken unanimously by the board of directors as the post was lying vacant and had to be filled, he said. Another director of the bank, Shivaji Nalawade, concurred, saying the resolution to induct Tejasvee was passed at a meeting of the board of directors on Thursday. 'Since the elected body has completed more than two and half years, it has the right to appoint a new director. We have directors from across party lines and the appointment has no political angle,' Nalawade said.
