A FORMER football starlet blinded by a bottle thug says the trauma drove him to success - after becoming an award-winning car dealer.
John McTier, 37, was a promising winger tipped for the top when six neds launched an unprovoked attack as he walked his girlfriend home in Govan, Glasgow, in December 2004.

The sports prodigy, then 16, had just signed for Ayr United when the assault stole his left eye and robbed him of his future dreams.
But he channeled hurt into hope and was just crowned Best Independent Motor Dealer at the 2025 Scottish Business Awards for his Cardonald-based firm Woodville Cars.
John, who recently welcomed daughter McKinley with wife Nikki, 38, said: 'It was a job to start with and then when I started doing something right, I got a buzz out of that.
'I was always wanting to be a football player, I tried my best, I wouldn't do the teenager thing and get drunk or whatever, I trained and I worked my best.
'I gave it 110 per cent. I didn't know any other thing.
'As stupid as it sounds, if a wee granny comes in and books you, you've got to get that right, I'm not taking that car out unless it's checked and double checked.
'It comes back to treating other people like you'd like to be treated yourself. I don't even know who nominated me for this award but it means a lot.'
John was initially offered just £32,000 in compensation for the assault, including just £5,000 for loss of earnings.
But lawyer Liam O'Donnell, ex-Scottish PFA chief Fraser Wishart, then Ayr coach Robert Connor and former Dundee United winger and team-mate Craig Conway told the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority he could have signed for an Old Firm club and earned £500,000 a year.

John - who also suffered a broken nose and cuts to his head and body was eventually awarded more than £260,000 in 2010 and used the cash to set himself up in business.
But it didn't all go to plan - as he first qualified as a college lecturer before the recession hit and public sector cuts interfered with the job he was promised.
Now he reckons his success comes down to the fact he never rips off customers.
He said: 'I guess it's a nice feeling to know when you're recognised.
'I have friends who say I'm doing everything right and I thought they were just being nice, but then loads of people have said the same.
'If I do an MOT, I don't just do the bare minimum, I do everything. If it's advisories or anything, I do all that before I put the car out the door, so then it's 100 per cent right.
'That way, they're not going to phone me back up in a month's time. I'll just eradicate that by doing it all, it costs more money, I don't make as much money, but if it helps me build my brand and helps my customers get a better deal, then it's worth it.
'What's for you won't go by you - and I'm very happy with my life now."

Russian attacks on Ukraine kill at least 10 people, most of them in Kyiv
Russia fired 352 drones and decoys overnight, as well as 11 ballistic missiles and five cruise missiles, Ukraine's air force said. Air defences intercepted or jammed 339 drones and 15 missiles before they could reach their targets, a statement said. The strikes came nearly a week after a Russian attack killed 28 people in Kyiv, 23 of them in a residential building that collapsed after a direct missile hit. Russian forces for several months have been trying to drive deeper into Ukraine as part of a summer push along the 620-mile front line, though the Institute for the Study of War said progress has failed to make significant gains. 'Russian forces are largely relying on poorly trained infantry to make gains in the face of Ukraine's drone-based defence,' the Washington-based think tank said late Sunday. Russia also has pounded civilian areas with long-range strikes in an apparent attempt to weaken Ukrainian morale. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said preliminary data indicated that Russian forces used North Korean missiles in the Kyiv strike. He called Russia, North Korea and Iran, which has provided drones to Russia, a 'coalition of murderers'. Mr Zelensky said Ukraine's defence and new ways to pressure Russia will be the two main topics in his visit to the United Kingdom on Monday. Mr Zelensky is set to meet with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer ahead of this week's Nato summit in The Hague. French foreign minister Jean-Noel Barrot said the latest strikes demonstrated Russia's 'unlimited cruelty' by deliberately aiming at civilian targets, and promised more European sanctions on Moscow. Drones and missiles hit residential areas, hospitals and sports infrastructure in numerous districts across Kyiv, emergency services said. The most severe damage was in Shevchenkivskyi district, where a section of a five-story apartment building collapsed. Six people were killed in the district, Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said. Ten others, including a pregnant woman, were rescued from a nearby high-rise that also sustained heavy damage. Dozens of vehicles were burned or mangled by flying debris. The Russian attack also damaged the entrance to the Sviatoshyn subway station in Kyiv, slightly injuring two people, said Timur Tkachenko, the head of Kyiv's military administration. He said more than 30 people were injured across the city. Underground subway stations have served as shelters for those seeking protection from aerial attacks. During almost nightly strikes, stations across Kyiv are often filled with people waiting out the danger. Elsewhere in Ukraine, a Russian short-range drone attack killed two people and wounded 10 more in the Chernihiv region late on Sunday, authorities said. Three children were among the wounded, according to the regional administration head, Viacheslav Chaus. Another person was killed and eight wounded overnight in the city of Bila Tserkva, around 53 miles south west of the capital. Meanwhile, Russia's Defence Ministry said its air defences shot down 23 Ukrainian drones overnight into Monday.

Lisbon Lion John Clark dies aged 84
Clark, who made over 300 appearances for Celtic following his debut in 1959, spent over 40 years at the Glasgow club as player, coach, assistant manager and kit man. His finest hour was in Lisbon when the Hoops became the first British club to lift the European Cup following their victory over Inter Milan. Everyone at #CelticFC is deeply saddened at the news that legendary Lisbon Lion, John Clark has passed away at the age of 84. The club added: 'His love for the club was a constant throughout his life and, after leaving his role with the first team, he was able to enjoy matches from the stands at Celtic Park. He will be greatly missed by everyone at the club.' Clark won four Scottish league titles, four League Cups, three Scottish Cups and one European Cup during a 13-year playing career with the Hoops before moving on to Morton in 1971. He returned to Celtic Park as coach of the reserve and youth sides before becoming former manager – and fellow Lisbon Lion – Billy McNeill's assistant, first at Aberdeen and then, in 1978, at Celtic. Clark went on to take charge of Cowdenbeath, Stranraer and Clyde before returning to Celtic Park as kit man, a role he held for nearly 20 years. Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers said: 'Greatness is a word people throw around, but for John Clark, it is a very fitting tribute. 'John was instrumental in delivering our greatest day ever and his achievement is forever etched in Celtic's proud history.' 'That famous day in Lisbon, which John was such an integral part of, changed our club forever. Ever since, each player who has passed through our club has stood on the shoulders of giants and John was certainly one of those giants. 'John gave his life to Celtic both as a player and on our staff in a variety of his roles and his contribution to our great club over so many decades is immeasurable.'
