More than 400,000 empty seats at Club World Cup so far

BBC News21 hours ago

More than 400,000 (423,004) seats have been left empty during the opening round of Club World Cup group matches in the United States.Stadiums have been 56.8% full, with more than half a million (556,369) spectators attending.Nine stadiums have been used for the first 16 matches of the tournament, with a combined capacity of 979,373.The expanded tournament is being treated as a dress rehearsal for the international men's World Cup next summer, which will be held in the USA, Canada and Mexico.Of the 16 matches played so far, half of the matches have seen attendances below 50% of the capacity of the stadium. The lowest attended game was South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns win over South Korean side Ulsan HD in front of 3,412 spectators at Inter & Co Stadium in Florida.
The fixture between Ulsan HD and Mamelodi Sundowns was by far the worst attended match. The official attendance meant the stadium was just 13.6% full.Local journalist Maher Mezahi claimed to have counted 97 fans before kick-off and 577 with 10 minutes left to play. The stadium for River Plate's win over Japanese club Urawa Red Diamonds was 17% full, while it was 20% for Salzburg's win over Pachuca in Cincinnati.Only 31% of the capacity of Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium saw Chelsea beat LAFC in their opening match.Despite the setbacks, Fifa is optimistic that attendances will increase. In a statement on Tuesday, it said that "four of the five top-selling group stage matches are still to come".
Fifa says nearly 1.5m tickets have been sold for the tournament and despite the issues there have still been some large attendances. The highest-recorded crowd of 80,619 watched Paris St-Germain's 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid at the Rose Bowl Stadium in California. The three matches in Miami, which has a large Hispanic and Latino population, have been highly attended. Fifa said the opening game between Inter Miami and Al-Ahly was watched by 60,927.Boca Juniors' Group C match against Benfica had more than 55,000 in the 65,000-capacity Hard Rock Stadium. The third game in Miami had 62,415 attend Real Madrid's 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal.Inter Miami and Boca Juniors are playing in Miami again later in the group stage.
Fifa scheduling headache
There were gates of 18,161 for Juventus' win over Al-Ain and 21,152 for Bayern Munich's 10-0 win over Auckland City. The stadium's were 91% and 81% full, respectively - with the games taking place in smaller stadiums.Fifa may come to rue not doing the same with some of the matches scheduled during regular work hours. On Monday at 3pm local time, Chelsea beat LAFC in front of 22,137 fans - but in a stadium which can hold 71,000 spectators.Doug Roberson of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution thinks there were several factors, but "it's not because people here don't care about soccer"."The people aren't here because it's Monday at 3pm," he said. "Frankly I am surprised there are as many as there are."
Chelsea played at the stadium in Atlanta two years ago and almost sold out, with more than 70,000 fans watching them face Newcastle in a friendly tournament named the Premier League Summer Series. That match took place at 8.15pm.Two or three games are being played during regular work hours on every other weekday until the group stage ends on 26 June (noon, 2pm and 3pm local time).Tuesday's noon kick-off in New York saw more than 40,000 empty seats at the Met Life Stadium for the goalless draw between Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense. There were 30,000 empty seats in the same time slot on Wednesday in Philadelphia as Manchester City opened their campaign against Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca at the Lincoln Financial Field.
Gold Cup clash
The Club World Cup has had to go up against the Concacaf Gold Cup, which is also being held in the United States and Canada. The continental football tournament is contested between 16 nations across North America, Central America and the Caribbean. This year Saudi Arabia have also been invited to take part.Attendances have also been down for the tournament - the United States beat Trinidad and Tobago 5-0 in front 12,610 fans at the 18,000-capacity Pay Pal Park in California. Two years ago the same fixture in the same tournament attracted 40,000 fans in North Carolina.

Cole Palmer makes surprise admission as he explains shirt number change

Chelsea star Cole Palmer made a surprise revelation while explaining his decision to switch to the No.10 shirt. Following their opening win against Los Angeles FC, Chelsea continue their Club World Cup campaign on Friday night against Flamengo. The Premier League club take on the Brazilian giants, whose side includes former Chelsea and Arsenal star Jorginho, in Philadelphia at 7pm UK time. Ahead of the tournament, it was announced that Palmer would be switching his shirt number from 20 to 10, befitting of his status as arguably the team's best player. The No.10 shirt had been worn by Mykhailo Mudryk since January 2023, with the Ukraine international not given a replacement number amid his suspension for failing a doping test last year. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Since the announcement, Mudryk has been charged by the Football Association and could be banned from football for up to four years, with Enzo Maresca seemingly in the dark about his future at Stamford Bridge. The 24-year-old, nicknamed 'Misha' by his teammates, has denied knowingly taking any banned substances, explaining in a statement last November he was in 'complete shock' having 'not done anything wrong'. It is usually customary for players to seek permission from each other if they wish to take their squad number, but Palmer has revealed that he has not been in contact with his exiled teammate. 'I have not spoken to Misha yet, but I will when the time is right,' the England international told reporters ahead of the Flamengo clash. 'It is not really my place to get involved with him at the minute. I will speak to him. On Wednesday, June 18, a Football Associaton spokesman said: 'We can confirm that Mykhailo Mudryk has been charged with Anti-Doping Rule Violations alleging the presence and/or use of a prohibited substance, in terms of Regulations 3 and 4 of The FA's Anti-Doping Regulations. 'As this is an ongoing case, we are not in a position to comment further at this time.' 'I wore No.10 all my life growing up and I just like the number. More Trending 'Lionel Messi the big one, Wayne Rooney and players like that – it's an iconic number.' Palmer will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of successful Chelsea No.10s like Eden Hazard, Juan Mata and Joe Cole. Maresca also confirmed that he had no say in the matter, adding: 'Was I involved in this decision? No, no, I don't care about the numbers. 'It's a player matter. Is Cole good enough to wear the No10? Yes.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Club World Cup descends into chaos as French and Brazilian fans brawl in the stands in California

Football fans were left stunned when fans of Paris Saint-Germain and Brazilian side Botafogo were seen brawling in the stands during their Club World Cup match. The Champions League winners suffered a shock 1-0 defeat on Thursday, leaving their hopes of qualifying for the next round in the balance despite their 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid on matchday one. A first-half goal from Brazilian international Igor Jesus proved the difference between the reigning champions of Europe and South America at the Pasadena Rose Bowl. PSG were widely tipped as one of the hot favourites to win the new-look 32-team tournament after a stunning European campaign which culminated in their thumping 5-0 victory against Inter Milan in the Champions League final last month. They also hadn't lost in any competition since May 3 and Luis Enrique took the opportunity to rotate his side in California. Notably, Goncalo Ramos started at centre forward ahead of Ousmane Dembele, who remains out injured. The gamble, though, didn't pay off. But a dark cloud was cast over Botafogo's victory when their fans were seen throwing punches in the stands in California - though it is unclear what caused the melee. In a 58-second-long video shared on social media, a person in a Botafogo shirt could be seen throwing punches before more members of the crowd became involved. Someone in a PSG shirt appeared to punch another supporter from behind, as a bundle of sorts ensued elsewhere in the stand, which had no individual seats - rather blocks of bench-like furniture. More people wearing shirts of the European champions then seemed to get involved, with one person in black appearing to cheer. There was a brief period of separation with no punches thrown in the two groups, before someone in a Botafogo strip approached a PSG fan and fell to the floor as more punches were thrown. The PSG supporter, who was wearing shorts and a bandana, was then ushered away by someone else wearing the same strip. That was until they were caught up in another scrap, which saw a Botafogo supporter throw a punch and the other fan then turn around to get involved with shouting heard in the background. A number of other supporters then piled in, many falling over in the stands, with one PSG fan appearing to stomp on a supporter. The footage ends with people running in to separate the brawl and a group trying to help one fan, who was laying in between rows, up. The last time a Champions League holders lost to a South American side came back in 2012, when Corinthians stunned Chelsea in the Club World Cup final. To avoid a red-faced elimination, PSG must beat MLS outfit Seattle Sounders, who have been knocked out of the tournament, in their last group match.

Benfica vs Auckland City prediction, odds and betting offer

The gulf in class showed when Auckland faced Bayern Munich and the bookies expect a similar outcome when the New Zealand side face Portuguese giants Benfica Auckland City's calamitous 10-goal thrashing to Bayern Munich are still being felt as the Kiwis gear up for their next Club World Cup clash against Benfica. The match starkly highlighted the chasm between the amateur New Zealand side and the world's football titans. Bayern Munich, without mercy, unleashed a goal storm last Sunday that left Auckland in disarray. However, it's not all doom and gloom for Auckland's financiers who are set to pocket a hefty sum from FIFA this summer. Yet, for Albert Riera and his squad, pride is at stake. They will be determined to bounce back and deliver a more commendable performance in their remaining fixtures. But here's the kicker - Benfica won't be pulling any punches in this encounter. The Portuguese giants are aware that goal difference could be a decisive factor in determining who progresses to the knockout phase. Bayern Munich is expected to dominate Group C, leaving Benfica and Boca Juniors vying for the runner-up position. Their opening match ended in a nail-biting 2-2 draw, with both teams showing resilience to recover from a 2-0 deficit amidst a game that witnessed three players sent off. This means the battle for second place could come down to who can rack up the most goals against Auckland City.
