Beloved rescue dogs poisoned during house robbery
'I've lost my best friends and my ability to work,' said an inconsolable Kerlene Treunicht, speaking about her furry babies Red and Khaos, who were killed during a robbery at her home in Robertsham on May 23.
Treunicht is receiving a lot of support from Fourways residents because that is where she runs her animal rescue organisation, Missing Pet Solutions. The organisation specialises in reuniting lost pets with their families through expert K9 searches.
'It's not just a job, it's a calling that my dogs Red and Khaos shared with me.'

On that fateful day, Treunicht said, 'Four armed men broke into my home and poisoned my beloved K9 partners, Red and Khaos, with sausage laced with illegal poison. They were sleeping peacefully inside, but managed to get out when the robbers forced their way in. They then found this sausage. Red died in his kennel. Khaos collapsed just outside hers.'
She said the intruders stole laptops, cellphones, a PlayStation, a Nintendo Switch, jewellery, cash, and other valuable items.
But her beloved dogs are a greater loss. 'They were more than dogs, they were heroes, and my family. They helped bring lost pets home, and now they're gone, taken in the most brutal, senseless way.

'The silence and loneliness are excruciating. I don't want to get out of bed, because I'm waiting for them to wake me up, as they did every morning. I don't see a purpose anymore without my babies. Rest in perfect peace, my angels.'
Treunicht added that she could not make sense of her loss, yet. 'But I promise you this. I will carry your legacy forward. I will keep helping the lost get found. I will do it with the same fire you gave me, with the same unstoppable drive you had every time we hit the ground.'
In her dogs' honour, she has started a BackaBuddy fund to train new tracking dogs to continue the mission her fur babies lived for.

'It has been incredible. It's amazing how people stand together in times like this. The crime in this country is out of hand.'
'Thank you for helping me honour Red and Khaos in the only way I know how – by continuing their legacy.'

Brian Scharneck sentenced to life for the brutal murder of partner Marilyn Maarman
Brian Scharneck will serve life behind bars for the murder of his life partner, Marilyn Maarman, after she allegedly admitted to infidelity. He admitted to violently assaulting her and was arrested the day after she died in the hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. Image: Independent Newspapers Woman killer, Brian Scharneck, will serve life behind bars for the murder of his life partner, Marilyn Maarman, 38, after a violent assault due to her alleged infidelity. This week, the Nxuba Regional Court (formerly Cradock) sentenced Scharneck, 33, for Maarman's murder, which occurred at their home on Elansdrift Farm, where they cohabited. According to court details, fellow farm employees noticed that Maarman had sustained severe burns to her head and face on September 30, 2023, which raised concerns for her well-being, and they immediately called an ambulance. Eastern Cape division of the National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali, in a statement, said that Maarman was transported to the hospital but sadly succumbed to her injuries the following day, on October 1, 2023. 'Following her death, allegations emerged that Scharneck had physically assaulted her. During the police investigation, Scharneck confessed to attacking her with a ceramic bowl, kicking her, and punching her with his fists after accusing her of infidelity. In his own words, her admission to the allegation enraged him and led to the violent assault. Scharneck was arrested on 2 October 2023 and later pleaded guilty to the charge of murder in terms of Section 112(2) of the Criminal Procedure Act,' said Tyali. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ In arguing for a fitting sentence, Regional Court Prosecutor Makabongwe Seyibokwe highlighted the cruel and sustained nature of the attack, emphasising that gender-based violence has no place in society and must be met with the harshest penalties. 'He pointed out that the victim was attacked in her own home, a place where she should have felt safe, and that the brutality of the assault, carried out by someone she trusted and lived with, demonstrated a complete disregard for her dignity, life, and humanity. 'Seyibokwe added that such acts of domestic violence continue to plague communities and that the courts must send a clear message that offenders will face the full might of the law,' said Tyali. Welcoming the sentence, Eastern Cape Director of Public Prosecutions, Barry Madolo, said: 'This life sentence reflects the NPA's commitment to ensuring justice for victims of gender-based violence. This ruling sends a strong message that such acts of violence will be met with the full might of the law. No person should have to endure violence at the hands of a partner or loved one. We commend the prosecution team and the investigating officers for their swift and thorough work in securing this conviction.' Tyali said they welcomed the sentence imposed on Scharneck for the brutal, gender-based murder of his life partner. 'This outcome affirms the justice system's unwavering commitment to addressing gender-based violence (GBV) with the seriousness it deserves. The sentence sends a strong and unequivocal message that perpetrators of intimate partner violence will face the full might of the law. 'The NPA remains resolute in its pursuit of justice for victims of GBV and in ensuring safe communities for all,' said Tyali.

Government struggles to account for civil servants in National Sex Offenders Register
Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi says although every convicted sex offender was included in the register by virtue of a sexual offence committed, the information contained in it was not disaggregated per profession, gender, or employment. Image: File The government is currently unable to ascertain the number of civil servants listed in the National Register for Sex Offenders. This startling revelation emerged when Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi responded to questions regarding the verification process for public sector employees. Build One South Africa Deputy Leader and MP Nobuntu Hlazo-Webster had wanted to know the number of civil servants on the national register, and asked to be furnished with the breakdown per department, job category, and province. In her response, Kubayi clarified that the register does not disclose information in terms of profession, gender, or specific employment. 'Every convicted sex offender is included in the register by virtue of a sexual offence committed,' she said. 'The total number of individuals who are currently employed in the public sector that are listed on the National Register for Sex Offenders cannot be determined.,' Kubayi explained. Next Stay Close ✕ Complicating the matter, Public Service and Administration Minister Mzamo Buthelezi stated that his department does not manage or access the national register, which falls under the custodianship of the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development. Responding to BOSA Leader Mmusi Maimane on the total number of civil servants on the register, Buthelezi said the role of his department was restricted to guiding employment policy to departments. 'Departments, as employers, are responsible for verifying employment suitability during recruitment and managing compliance with disciplinary and ethical standards for current employees,' he said. 'The identification and management of individuals listed on the register, such as knowing who they are, where they are employed, and in what capacity, rests with departments in accordance with their delegated authority and human resources responsibilities,' Buthelezi said. Despite the gaps in oversight, Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube provided an update on the status of vetting within the education sector. She revealed that provinces have received 35,800 certificates from the National Register for Sex Offenders, out of approximately 84,000 applications submitted as at April 30. 'While progress is being made in this regard, provinces have raised challenges, particularly related to limited capacity within the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development and the South African Police Service, which may have contributed to the delays.' It was reported in April that out of a total of 405,738 teachers employed by provincial departments, 78,509 (19%) have been vetted against the National Register of Sexual Offenders by the end of March. Gwarube said her department remained committed to ensuring that no person deemed unsuitable to work with children was employed within the basic education sector. 'Through continuous monitoring and stronger interdepartmental collaboration, the Department of Basic Education will work to ensure that the safety, dignity, and well-being of all learners are protected,' she said. Responding to DA MP Delmaine Christians, Gwarube said her department did not have currently detailed information regarding the number of cases of sexual abuse or harassment committed by teachers or staff employed at provinces during the past three academic years. 'This information resides with the relevant employers,' she said, referring to the heads of provincial departments, school governing bodies, and owners of independent schools. Gwarube said it was the responsibility of the employer to ensure that appropriate disciplinary action was taken against employees who engaged in sexual abuse or harassment. 'This question falls under the executive authority of the Members of the Executive Council for the nine provincial Education departments. The member is kindly requested to refer the question to the respective MECs.' However, Gwarube said her department will request all the provincial departments and the South African Council for Educators to provide the information requested. 'This information can be provided once received.' The National Register of Sex Offenders is not open to the public but is available for the public and private sector to vet whether someone is suitable to work with children and other vulnerable groups. Kubayi previously said they were advocating for amendments to the confidentiality and disclosure clauses of the Sexual Offences and Related Matters Act with the goal of making the register publicly accessible. 'We have initiated a multi-stakeholder consultative process engaging key experts and institutions to facilitate compliance with the aim of releasing the register as soon as possible.'

Matjhabeng Municipality fined R250,000 for contempt of court over sewage spill
The Matjhabeng Local Municipality, currently under administration, and its acting municipal manager, Thabo Panyani, have been declared in contempt of court and fined R250,000 for failing to implement a court order compelling them to address sewage spillage in Welkom. Image: Supplied The troubled Matjhabeng Local Municipality and its acting municipal manager, Thabo Panyani, have been found guilty of contempt of court and fined R250,000 after failing to address sewage spillage into business premises. The sewage spillage into Nashua Welkom has been the subject of court proceedings dating back to 2021. In September 2022, then-municipal manager Zingisa Tindleni was ordered to take all steps necessary to ensure full and timely compliance with the Free State High Court decision forcing the municipality to repair the sewage system and provide updates to Nashua Welkom's attorneys monthly until the repairs are finalised. The municipality was also ordered to take all the necessary steps and ensure that temporary mobile pumps, which regulate the flow of sewerage within the interim installed pumps, are kept in place. Next Stay Close ✕ Additionally, the municipality was told to take all precautionary steps to avoid, in the interim, any possible contamination and/or associated problems/issues/damages with the sewage lines/infrastructure and the proper and effective flow thereof up until the final date of resolution of the matter as ordered. Parties in the matter were then allowed to approach the court on the same papers, and duly supplemented, if need be, for the further directives and or orders in the event of a change of circumstances or non-compliance with the terms of the order. In December last year, Nashua Welkom and the municipality agreed that as reasonably possible in the interim, the municipality will pump the sewerage lines at or near the company's premises in Welkom twice a day and, if necessary, and the circumstances change, as at rainfall, the municipality shall ensure that the pumping of the sewerage line is done at regular intervals, including jet pumping to address any emergency to avoid any possible contamination and/or associated problems/issues, including damages to its property. In addition, the municipality also undertook to clean any current sewerage spills at Nashua Welkom's premises and surrounding areas to avoid any further pollution and or health risks and keep a logbook to be signed by the operator as well as the company immediately after the pumping. However, the company approached the high court, arguing that the municipality had failed to comply with the order, and Acting Judge Suzanne Boonzaaier agreed last Thursday, June 5. 'In the circumstances, wilfulness could be inferred, placing an evidential burden on the respondents (the municipality and Panyani) to raise a reasonable doubt as to whether their non-compliance was wilful or in bad faith,' she found. Nashua Welkom had wanted Panyani to be imprisoned for six months or such as the court might find appropriate and on conditions it deems appropriate. But Acting Judge Boonzaaier ruled that previous court orders were issued when different officials held office in the local municipality. 'In my view, it would be inappropriate to attribute that responsibility to the current acting official in his personal capacity, particularly given the temporary nature of his position,' stated the acting judge. She was, however, not persuaded that the municipality and Panyani made every reasonable effort to comply with the court order, as the issue persists, and its impact continues to be felt not only by Nashua Welkom but also by the general public. Acting Judge Boonzaaier declared Matjhabeng and Panyani to be in contempt of court by failing to comply with three orders and ordered them to pay a fine of R250,000 to Nashua Welkom. The fine was wholly suspended for six months on condition that the municipality and Panyani purge their contempt.
