Sammy Hagar's dream about Eddie Van Halen inspired him to write a new song with late rocker

INDIO, Calif. — Sammy Hagar got the chance to work with his former bandmate, the late Eddie Van Halen, one last time.
Hagar released a song, "Encore, Thank You, Goodnight," that came to him in a dream not long after Van Halen's death in 2020.
"About a year after Eddie died, I had a dream of him. And I've dreamt about him many times," Hagar told Fox News Digital at the Stagecoach Festival, where he performed with Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani and Kenny Aronoff.
Hagar described the unusual feeling of dreaming of Van Halen while knowing his friend had already died.
"He was saying, 'Hey man, let's write a song. Dude, man, let's write a cool song.' And then he starts playing this riff, and I start singing. And, in the middle of a verse, I went, 'Oh, Eddie's passed.' And, boom, he was gone. And I woke up, but when I woke in the middle of it, I remembered what I was singing."

Hagar also managed to get down what Van Halen had been playing in the dream, and it became "Encore, Thank You, Goodnight," which he calls "a tribute to Eddie."
He and Van Halen were in the band together from 1985 to 1996, and while there had been tensions off and on over the years, they had reconciled shortly before Van Halen died.
The rocker admitted he waited to release the song because "people are gonna think I'm crazy, and I am. You know, I'm never gonna write with Eddie again. This is the closest thing to writing a damn song with Eddie. And it is. And it's honest, and is brutally honest.
"I kept thinking … I wanna make it a thank you to him. I thought, 'Well, I'll just say thank you for the dream. Thank you for the visit. You know, what took you so long?' You know, I just wrote exactly about what happened in the dream, and I'm very happy with it. And the fans seem to love it. Everyone seems to embrace it. It's my way of thanking him. It's like, you know, goodbye. Miss you buddy, you know. And I do."
Hagar will keep on rocking and performing at his Las Vegas residency, "The Best of All Worlds Stays in Vegas The Residency," beginning April 30 and playing through May 17 at Dolby Live at Park MGM.

The 77-year-old welcomes the opportunity, noting the perception of a Las Vegas residency has changed drastically.
"Well, in the old days, if you played Vegas and did a residency, you were washed up. You know, you think, 'Oh, that's the graveyard, right? That's where you go to retire.' Now, if you don't have a residency, you're nobody," he said.
A Las Vegas residency gives Hagar the chance to perform but at a more manageable pace.
"The cool thing about it is, at my age, I'm very tired of packing up and going on tour in hotel room after hotel room, travel, bad food, bad night's sleep, trying to travel and then get to a show late. And then you got to run on stage unprepared," the "I Can't Drive 55" rocker said.
"Residency gives you a chance to have a good night's sleep, eat some good food — best culinary market in the world, Las Vegas — and rehearse on days off in the same venue, and you get it all dialed in. You don't have to do sound checks once you've got it dialed.
"I think it's for old guys now not to go to retire, but to say, 'I can keep doing this on this level. I can just keep doing it like this.' I don't want to go on tour again. I tell everybody right now, from the bottom of my heart, I've been doing it my whole life. It's tough on your body, on your everything, on my voice.
"Hopefully, I'll enjoy this as much as I think I'm going to, and I can continue maybe squeeze another 50-100 shows out of this old guy."
But Hagar remains energetic and youthful after decades of rock 'n' roll.

"I don't have a secret to youth. I'm just very happy to do what I do, and I've never thought about how old I am. I've never thought about certain things, like worried about getting old," Hagar said.
"I don't think I'm even old yet. I want to go to sleep at 125, I swear, and I just really think that if there's any secret, it's just to continue going and not quit and not retire and say, 'You know, I am done, I can't. I'm just gonna go play golf every day.' I don't play golf. I play music. And I can play music for the rest of my life.
"Not sure I can go on tour that much, but I can do shows. And as long as I can sing, it's really all about that."

Rapper Fat Joe slams child sex abuse claims as $20M extortion scheme

Rapper Fat Joe is facing a $20 million lawsuit for allegedly engaging in sexual abuse against minors, among other accusations. The lawsuit was filed on Thursday by his former hype man, T.A. Dixon, in the Southern District of New York. The suit accuses Fat Joe, whose real name is Joseph Antonio Cartagena, of a "sustained campaign of exploitation." The rapper "systematically engaged in coercive labor exploitation, financial fraud, sexual manipulation, violent intimidation, and psychological coercion," Dixon claimed in the 157-page lawsuit, obtained by Fox News Digital. The lawsuit added that it was "all intended to enrich" Fat Joe and his associates "while deliberately suppressing, silencing, and erasing [Dixon's] substantial creative, artistic, and commercial contributions, which were foundational to Defendant Cartagena's professional success and personal brand." Fat Joe's lawyer told Fox News Digital, "The lawsuit filed by Tyrone Blackburn and Terrance Dixon is a blatant act of retaliation — a desperate attempt to deflect attention from the civil suit we filed first, which exposed their coordinated scheme to extort Mr. Cartagena through lies, threats, and manufactured allegations." It added, "Law enforcement is aware of the extortionate demand at the heart of this scheme. The allegations against Mr. Cartagena are complete fabrications — lies intended to damage his reputation and force a settlement through public pressure. Mr. Cartagena will not be intimidated. We have taken legal action to expose this fraudulent campaign and hold everyone involved accountable." Blackburn, Dixon's attorney, told Fox News Digital, "Fat Joe is Sean Combs minus the Tusi [a drug also known as "pink cocaine"]. It is clear he has learned nothing from his 2013 federal conviction," referring to the rapper's previous conviction on tax evasion charges. Fat Joe's alleged exploitation extended "beyond financial fraud," Dixon's lawsuit claimed, adding he was allegedly forced into "humiliating situations, including sex acts performed under duress and surveillance, accompanied by threats" that he would be left in foreign countries if he did not comply. The lawsuit also claims that two of Fat Joe's associates, Peter "Pistol Pete" Torres and Richard "Rich Player" Jospitre, who were also included as defendants in the lawsuit, "actively engaged in physical threats, violent assaults, and intimidation tactics on Cartagena's explicit instructions, sustaining a climate of fear and coercion against Plaintiff and others who challenged the Enterprise's control." He claimed he was "coerced into more than 4,000 sexual acts to maintain his standing within the Enterprise." Dixon also alleged that during his time with the rapper, he "personally witnessed" him "engage in sexual relations with children who were fifteen and sixteen years old." "In exchange for cash, clothing, and payment of her cell phone bill, Defendant would get oral sex and other sexual acts performed on him by Minor Doe 1," the lawsuit claimed. Dixon said Minor Doe 1 was 16 years old. He claimed that Fat Joe began having sex with a second minor when she was 15 years old after a concert overseas and paid for her to get a Brazilian butt lift. Fat Joe also allegedly had sex with a third minor girl who met the rapper before she turned 16. He was "in love" with the third minor and "even contemplated leaving his wife" for her, the lawsuit claimed. "In a recorded conversation, Minor Doe 3 and her 15-year-old cousin describe in detail to Plaintiff how 'inappropriate' it was for Defendant, who was in his late 30s at the time, to be fawning over children," the document alleged. Dixon also worked as a "lyricist, background vocalist, security team member, and creative collaborator" during his time with the rapper, the lawsuit said, claiming he was "systematically excluded" from getting "fair compensation, proper attribution, and the substantial royalties and profits generated from his creative labor. Instead, Plaintiff was consistently underpaid, denied songwriting credits, and deliberately concealed from royalties and backend compensation." Fat Joe sued Dixon earlier this year for allegedly defaming him on social media after Dixon claimed the rapper flew a 16-year-old across state lines for sex, according to Variety.

A lifestyle and culinary icon recently took a firm position on the age-old debate of whether ketchup belongs on hot dogs or not. Meghan Markle is restocking her sold-out As Ever products on Friday, and several royal experts believe it's all part of her plan to be recognized as a royal entrepreneur with a reigning business empire. 'Of course, her royal title and Sussex name are boosting her brand,' British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard told Fox News Digital. 'She will cling to this as it will help bring her [more] fame and fortune, which is imperative to her life. She will keep her fingers in many pies and her name in lights with the hope that one or more of her ideas will bring in the much-needed hard cash.' 'However, she is not likely to amass her fortune from the sales of basic As Ever treats, however delicious they may be,' Chard claimed. A post on As Ever's Instagram teased that its bringing back its products and 'some delicious surprises.' The brand is known for raspberry spreads, teas, limited-edition wildflower honey and edible flowers, or 'flower sprinkles.' Chard made her comments shortly after quotes from royal expert Valentine Low's 2023 book, 'Courtiers,' surfaced online. At the time of the book's publication, the author claimed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex left royal life because they wanted the 'freedom to make money and dip their toes into politics.' 'Either way, this relaunch means Meghan Markle will face heightened scrutiny,' Fordwich claimed. 'Her products, while marketed as accessible, remain luxury non-essentials which don't resonate with a mass market audience, especially in our current tough economic times.'
