Parliamentary panel holds comprehensive discussion on India's Indian Ocean Strategy
New Delhi [India], June 17 (ANI): The Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs on Tuesday discussed India's Indian Ocean Strategy including the idea of the Blue Water Navy.
Talking to reporters after the meeting, Chairman of Committee Shashi Tharoor said that Operation Sindoor was not discussed, but some of the elements that became apparent during that confrontation came up in conversations.
Apart from the members, the meeting was attended by Defence Secretary, Secretary (East) in MEA and Vice Chief of Navy.
The agenda of the meeting was 'Evaluation of India's Indian Ocean Strategy' with representatives of the Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Defence to give oral evidence for examination of the subject.
Tharoor described the discussion as 'outstanding' and said every one of the committee members present asked questions.
'We had an ongoing subject called India's Indian Ocean Strategy, which is a foreign policy subject that has important defence dimensions. We also had the Defence Secretary and the Navy present to brief us. The discussions were outstanding. We spent more than two-and-a-half hours in serious conversation on various aspects, which you will see in the report submitted to Parliament. We were blessed to have the Vice Chief of the Navy, the Defence Secretary, and the Secretary East of the Ministry of External Affairs. It was a very thorough discussion,' Tharoor said.
'Every single one of the committee members present asked questions... It's a tremendous sense of involvement in this discussion. We'll have a good report coming out of this very comprehensive discussion... All of this (Blue Water Navy) was discussed... The whole idea of the Blue Water Navy, our military capacity beyond that, everything was thoroughly discussed,' he added.
The MPs present at the meeting included BJP's Nishikant Dubey, Arun Govil and RPN Singh and Congress MP KC Venugopal.
The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) had last month hosted the 'Second Blue Talks' in the national capital. The event was hosted in collaboration with the Embassy of France and the Embassy of Costa Rica in India.

Fardow is Iran's main enrichment location for uranium enrichment to 60 per cent. According to a CNN report, the US likely used six B-2 bombers to drop a dozen GBU-57 A/B 'bunker buster' bombs, also known as Massive Ordnance Penetrators (MOP), on the Fordow nuclear site, which is Iran's main location for uranium enrichment. A US official also told CNN that a full payload of bombs was dropped on his first public remarks following the strikes, President Trump warned that further action could be taken if Tehran fails to agree to a satisfactory peace settlement. Last week, India's Representative Office in Ramallah urged Indian nationals in Palestine to remain vigilant and observe locally advised safety and emergency procedures 'in view of the current situation'. "Ramifications for entire world, specifically for India," says former diplomat after US strikes three nuclear sites in Iran
New Delhi [India], June 22 (ANI): After the US and Israel targeted three nuclear sites in Iran, former Indian diplomat Mahesh Sachdev on Sunday said the situation could have severe global repercussions, including for India. Sachdev stated that much depends on whether Iran decides to retaliate. Sachdev added that the strikes could lead to more US attacks or push Iran to restart its nuclear program, which would have implications for global peace and India's interests in the Middle East. Speaking to ANI, Mahesh Sachdev said, '... A lot would depend on whether Iran decides to carry out its threatened retaliation for such an action. It will require a slightly longer-term assessment of whether the three sides in question have been totally destroyed, as President Trump mentioned... If it is not confirmed, it might involve further American raids, or might involve Iran repledging itself to exercise its nuclear option. Either way, it has ramifications for the entire world and specifically for India because India has a well-known stake in stability and peace in the Middle East for reasons of oil dependence, presence of Indian diaspora and remittances, trade, as well as investments.' Meanwhile, Trump announced on Sunday that the US had conducted 'massive precision strikes' on the nuclear sites in Iran. In his remarks after the strike, the US President warned Iran of retaliation if peace is not achieved soon. The underground site at Fordow and the larger Natanz plant were Iran's two primary uranium enrichment facilities, out of which Natanz had already been hit by Israel with smaller weapons earlier in the week, the New York Times reported. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that history will record the US President who 'acted to deny the world's most dangerous regime, the world's most dangerous weapons.' Iran, in a statement, acknowledged that the sites had been hit and called it 'savage aggression--an act in violation of international laws', stressing particularly the NPT. It alleged 'indifference and complicity' by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of indifference and complicity and said that it expects the international community to condemn these actions. The conflict between Israel and Iran entered its ninth day on Saturday, with the US now joining in support of Israel. The conflict started after Israel, on June 13, launched a massive airstrike on Iranian military and nuclear sites, dubbed 'Operation Rising Lion.' In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched a large-scale drone and missile operation, 'Operation True Promise 3', targeting Israeli fighter jet fuel production facilities and energy supply centres. Thrissur (Kerala) [India] June 22 (ANI): The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) General Secretary MA Baby has strongly condemned the recent US strikes on Iran's nuclear sites, terming it a 'grave violation of international law.' CPI(M)'s Baby expressed that his party unequivocally condemns the attack, which was reportedly carried out on the orders of the US President Donald Trump, ignoring the US intelligence. Baby further stated that the strike is similar to the lies about weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) that preceded the Iraq war. He warned that this attack's economic and political fallout would be global, including for India. Baby described the US as the 'No. 1 Rogue State' and called for protest action wherever possible. In an official post on X on Sunday, MA Baby said, 'We unequivocally condemn the US attack on Iran's nuclear sites -- a grave violation of international law. Trump ordered this strike, ignoring US intelligence that Iran is not pursuing nuclear weapons. This mirrors the Iraq war lies -- lies about WMDs then and nukes now. The economic & political fallout will be global, including for India. The US has proved itself to be the No. 1 Rogue State. Call for Protest action wherever possible.' Additionally, while speaking to ANI on the issue, Baby declared that the CPI(M) and other left parties have called upon people to come out in protest against the 'naked declaration of war' by the US and Israel. We, the CPIM and other left parties, call upon people to come out in protests against this naked declaration of war. We want the Indian government to take a firm stand against the attack on Iran by the USA and Israel...' MA Baby told ANI. The statement comes in the wake of heavy military strikes by the United States, targeting nuclear facilities in Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow. Iran condemned the attacks, calling them a violation of international law and vowed to continue its nuclear program. A statement issued by AEOI confirmed that early on Sunday morning, Iran's nuclear sites were 'subjected to savage aggression--an act in violation of international laws, particularly the NPT.' 'This action, which violates international regulations, unfortunately took place under the indifference--and even complicity--of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA),' it said.'The American enemy, through virtual space and by the declaration of its president, has taken responsibility for the attacks on the mentioned sites, which are under continuous IAEA monitoring in accordance with the Safeguards Agreement and the NPT,' the statement read. Hopefully, we will no longer need their services in this capacity. I hope that so.' Trump was joined by key members of his administration, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth , as he delivered the remarks from the White House.
