Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich dominated their opening matches at the inaugural 32-team FIFA Club World Cup on Sunday, with PSG defeating Atletico Madrid 4-0 and Bayern Munich crushing amateur side Auckland City 10-0 in Cincinnati.
PSG's victory came at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena in front of 80,619 spectators, despite temperatures reaching 31 degrees Celsius. Fabian Ruiz and Vitinha scored in the first half, while Senny Mayulu and Lee Kang-In added late goals.

Bayern Munich showed their superiority against amateur side Auckland City, whose players had to take unpaid leave to participate in the tournament. Jamal Musiala scored a hat-trick as a substitute, while Kingsley Coman, Michael Olise, and Thomas Mueller each scored twice, with Sacha Boey adding another goal.
"We have to remain modest but it was important to be able to say that we took the game seriously," said Bayern coach Vincent Kompany. "It was a good first match at the tournament, but of course challenges are going to grow and it's going to become more difficult."

Auckland's interim coach Ivan Vicelich acknowledged the significant gap between his amateur side and the professional opposition. "It is a dream for players coming from an amateur level to play in this environment," Vicelich said.
"We knew it was going to be a very difficult game, playing against one of the top teams in the world, potentially one of the favourites for the Club World Cup, so we are just really proud of the players' efforts.
"
PSG, fresh from their Champions League triumph, continued their impressive form as they pursue a fifth trophy this season. Their attacking display proved too much for Atletico Madrid to handle.

"We had the objective of making history this season, but this is a new chapter," said PSG coach Luis Enrique.
"It's a nice challenge for the players and the team, to want to keep winning. The club is hungry, the fans are hungry, the players and the team are hungry, and that's a good feeling. We have the same objective as in other competitions, which is to go as far as possible and try to win it."
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone refused to use the weather conditions as an excuse for their defeat. "I cannot blame it on the heat -- we both played in the same weather conditions," Simeone said.
"They played much better than we did. They have amazing players and that's why they've just won everything."
Bayern Munich will face tougher competition in their upcoming Group C matches against Boca Juniors and Benfica.
In other tournament action, Brazil's Palmeiras drew 0-0 with Porto in Group A at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, while Botafogo was scheduled to face Seattle Sounders in Group B.
The tournament marks the first time the FIFA Club World Cup has featured 32 teams, expanding from its previous format.

IND vs ENG: From Tendulkar-Sehwag to Gill-Jaiswal! Day 1 of Leeds Test rewrites history books

Tendulkar-Sehwag and Gill-Jaiswal (Agency Photos) NEW DELHI: India's new era in Test cricket began with style, composure, and history on Friday as Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal both scored hundreds on the first day of the opening Test against England at Headingley. India ended a dominant day at 359 for 3, the third-highest first-day score by an Indian team at the start of an overseas tour. 300+ runs on the first day of a tour for India 399/3 vs SL, Galle, 2017 372/7 vs SA, Bloemfontein, 2001 359/3 vs Eng, Headingley, 2025 356/2 vs Pak, Multan, 2004 302/4 vs WI, North Sound, 2016 Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. Gill, leading India for the first time in Tests, delivered a captain's knock, a fluent, unbeaten 127. It was his first century outside Asia, achieved under the added pressure of stepping into a side without modern legends like Kohli, Rohit, or Ashwin for the first time in 14 years. Poll Do you think India can secure a series victory against England after this strong start? Yes, definitely! Maybe, it's still early. No, they will struggle. Jaiswal, meanwhile, struck a confident 101, becoming the first Asian opener to score a Test hundred at Headingley. His innings, marked by crisp off-side play and a flurry of boundaries, ended right after tea when Ben Stokes finally breached his defenses. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 75% off installation for LeafFilter LeafFilter Gutter Protection Learn More Undo Still, the pair's 176-run stand for the third wicket had already set the tone. Vaibhav Suryavanshi, 14, watches in awe as Yashasvi Jaiswal celebrates century England, who had hoped to exploit early conditions after India wanted to bowl first, found little movement and even less discipline. Their pacers leaked runs all day, with captain Stokes (2/43) offering the only control. Rishabh Pant joined Gill late and ended the day with a typically attacking 65*, adding to India's imposing platform. As far as Day 1 statements go, India couldn't have asked for a better one to open the five-Test series.

Soccer-Mastantuono's move to Real Madrid was premature, says River boss Gallardo

-Franco Mastantuono's transfer to Real Madrid came too soon, while the 17-year-old was still developing and pivotal to River Plate's future, said coach Marcelo Gallardo ahead of the Argentine team's Club World Cup match against Monterrey. HT Image Gallardo acknowledged Mastantuono's departure will leave a void in his squad after the Spanish giants completed a deal worth around $45 million with River for the teenager earlier this month. For the Argentine manager, the midfielder still needed more time to grow at the club, but he acknowledged the early transfer as an understandable part of modern football. "It's natural, we train players for the world. Everything is happening earlier, young players are leaving faster, and I understand that those are the rules of the game," Gallardo told ESPN on Friday. "Our sporting project for the year was with him. We have to readjust, because there are players who, by their nature, are difficult to replace. "We knew that Mastantuono was going to leave at some point, but fans don't enjoy it that way. The market dictates the timing." Gallardo said he's urging Mastantuono to stay focused on the tournament despite the noise around his move. "All I want is for him to play naturally, to try to forget about everything that's going on, which is very difficult," he said. "I don't talk to him about where he's going to live or anything like that. I want him to play, which is what he knows how to do." River began their Club World Cup campaign with a 3-1 win over Japan's Urawa Red Diamonds, a result Gallardo described as key to easing early nerves. "We are happy to be able to be in a competition like this, a new one," he said. "I'm excited about how it's going, it was essential to start with a win and get over the nerves. "Now we're preparing for the match in Monterrey, which is a different level of difficulty." Following Saturday's game against the Mexican team in Pasadena, River will face Champions League runners-up Inter Milan on Wednesday.
