Report: Rays' owner in 'advanced talks' to sell team to Florida developer

Reuters2 days ago

June 18 - Tampa Bay Rays principal owner Stu Sternberg is in "advanced talks" to sell the franchise to a group led by a Florida-based residential developer, Sportico reported Wednesday.
Patrick Zalupski, a home builder in Jacksonville, has been identified as the potential lead buyer in a deal that values the team at about $1.7 billion. He already has executed a letter of intent to purchase the team, per Sportico.
Sternberg bought the Rays in 2004 for $200 million.
According to Zalupski's online bio, he is the founder, president and CEO of Dream Finders Homes. The company was founded in December 2008 and closed on 27 homes in Jacksonville the following year. Now, with an expanded footprint to many parts of the United States, Dream Finders has closed on more than 31,100 homes since its founding.
He also is a member of the board of trustees at the University of Florida.
A year ago, Sternberg had a deal in place to build a new stadium in the Historic Gas Plant District, a reimagined recreational, retail and residential district in St. Petersburg to replace Tropicana Field. However, after Hurricane Milton shredded the roof of the stadium last October, forcing the Rays into temporary quarters, Sternberg's commitment has been less than resolute, saying the team would have to bear excess costs that were not in the budget.
In March, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred and some other owners began to privately push Sternberg to sell the franchise, The Athletic reported.
It is unclear what Zalupski's group, if it ultimately goes through with the purchase and is approved by MLB owners, would do for a permanent stadium.
The Rays currently are playing at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, located at the site of the New York Yankees' spring training facility and home of their Single-A Tampa Tarpons.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts tells Padres rival Mike Shildt 'I'm gonna beat your a**' as tensions spill over

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts appeared to warn his Padres counterpart Mike Shildt that he would 'beat his a**' after the benches cleared on Thursday night. Tensions spilled over in Los Angeles after Fernando Tatis Jr. was hit by a pitch, with players and coaches spilling on to the field in anger. As Tatis lay on the floor in agony, an irate Shildt stormed out of the bench and began to complain about the incident. Before long, both benches had emptied and fracas had ensued, with officials attempting to separate the two teams. No punches were thrown but Roberts could be seen trading words with Shildt, who had to be restrained by fellow San Diego staff members. An official attempted to calm Roberts down and lead him back towards the Dodgers bench. But, in another clip that soon flooded social media, the manager could be seen pointing and shouting 'I'm going to beat your a**!' Managers Dave Roberts and Mike Shildt had a lot to say to each other. — The Comeback (@thecomeback) June 20, 2025 Dodgers manager Roberts and Padres manager Shildt were ejected following the tense back-and-forth exchange. 'I didn´t feel good about Tatis - great player, good guy - getting hit,' Roberts said. 'I didn´t feel good about it. 'And so as (Shildt) comes out, and he´s yelling at me and staring me down, that bothers me. Because, to be quite frank, that´s the last thing I wanted.' Shildt said he has respect for the Dodgers but seeing Tatis get hit three times by their pitchers in less than two weeks doesn't sit right. 'Whether it was (intentional) or it wasn't, enough is enough,' Shildt said. 'We got a guy who's getting X-rays right now, is one of the best players in the game, fortunately he's on our team, and this guy has taken shots, OK?' The teams waited more than two months to face each other for the first time this season and it took seven games over 11 days for the simmer to reach full boil. Dodgers right-hander Jack Little — making his major league debut — hit Tatis Jr. with a pitch in the ninth inning. Padres reliever Robert Suarez hit Shohei Ohtani with a pitch in the bottom of the ninth and was ejected. Tatis and Ohtani were each hit by pitches twice in the series. Xander Bogaerts homered among his four hits and scored three runs, and the San Diego Padres beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3 on Thursday night to avoid a four-game sweep.

Putin says Russia plans to deepen military-technical ties with 'friendly countries'

ST PETERSBURG, Russia, June 20 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that Russia intends to develop military and technical cooperation with "friendly countries" with whom Moscow wants to jointly produce arms and train military personnel. In a speech at Russia's showcase economic forum in St Petersburg, Putin said Moscow also planned to modernise its own armed forces and their bases by equipping them with the latest weapons and technology. "We will harness new technology to improve the combat capabilities of the Russian armed forces, modernise military infrastructure facilities, (and) equip them with the latest technology and weapons and equipment," he said. "At the same time, we intend to develop military-technical co-operation with friendly countries. And we are talking not only about supplies or the modernisation of equipment and weapons, but also about joint development, personnel training, and the creation of turn-key enterprises and production facilities," he said. Talking about global trade, Putin said Russia planned to develop trade ties with its partners by removing barriers, opening up market niches and deepening investment cooperation.

Russia must not let economy slip into recession, says Putin

ST PETERSBURG, Russia, June 20 (Reuters) - Russia's economy must under no circumstances slide into recession, President Vladimir Putin told an economic forum on Friday, in a clear instruction to assembled government ministers and central bankers. The Bank of Russia hiked its key interest rate to the highest level since the early 2000s in October, but cut by one percentage point to 20% earlier this month. The Kremlin has said this easing did not go far enough, as the economy threatens to cool too quickly after running hot for two years thanks largely to huge increases in defence spending. "Our most important task is to ensure the economy's transition to a balanced growth trajectory," Putin said in a keynote speech at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum. "Balanced growth is moderate inflation, low unemployment, and continued positive economic dynamics... At the same time, some specialists and experts point to the risks of stagnation and even recession. This should not be allowed under any circumstances." Economy Minister Maxim Reshetnikov, in a downbeat message to Russia's showcase economic event, said on Thursday that the economy was on the verge of sliding into recession and monetary policy decisions would determine whether it falls into one or not. At this week's forum, government ministers and business leaders have stepped up pressure on central bank governor Elvira Nabiullina to deliver deeper rate cuts.
