NIT-R convocation: 2,065 students receive degrees

ROURKELA: At least 2,065 students were awarded degrees at the 22nd convocation ceremony of the National Institute of Technology-Rourkela (NIT-R) held here on Friday.
Addressing the graduating students, chief guest and CMD of Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) Uday A Kaole said, 'This day marks the beginning of a new, challenging chapter where your knowledge must translate into performance, with accountability, integrity and purpose. Education is the foundation of national progress, and institutes like NIT-Rourkela are critical pillars in this journey. Be adaptable, stay rooted in your values, and always strive to give back.'
Virtually addressing the students, chairman of the Board of Governors (BoG), NIT-R SN Subrahmanyan said, 'We are in an era defined by youth, innovation, and boundless potential. As engineers graduating into a rapidly transforming world, you are architects of change.'
NIT-R director Prof K Umamaheshwar Rao said by introducing new-age programmes such as BTech in Artificial Intelligence, and a growing international student community, the institute is preparing graduates to thrive in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
On the occasion, 1061 BTech degrees, 21 BArch, 39 BTech and MTech dual degree, 68 Integrated MSc, 180 MSc, six MA, 43 MBA, 469 MTech, one Master of Technology (Research) and 177 PhD degrees were awarded.
The degree recipients included 93 international students from USA, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Non-Resident Indians.
Gold medals were awarded to Swayansha Routray for best graduate in BTech and BArch, Barsa Barnali Das for best postgraduate in MTech, Satyajit Sahu for best postgraduate in MBA, Pranay Sahu for best postgraduate in Integrated MSc, Akash Devgan for best postgraduate in MSc and MA, Estari Uday Kiran for best postgraduate in BTech and MTech dual degree, Vaghasiya Rominkumar Ashvinbhai for best postgraduate project in MTech and dual degree besides Shishir Khanal for best undergraduate project in BTech and BArch.
Four distinguished alumnus awards were also given to Prof Sukumar Mishra, Ashok Kumar Basa, RS Raghavan, Dr Bhartendu Deo.

Indian Navy holds ‘Steel Cutting' ceremony for fourth Fleet Support Ship at Hindustan Shipyard Limited in Visakhapatnam

'Steel Cutting' ceremony of fourth of the five Fleet Support Ships (FSS) was held at Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) in the presence of Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, as the chief guest, according to a release here on Saturday. Vice-admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command, and commodore Hemant Khatri, CMD, HSL, and other senior officials from Navy and HSL were present. The Navy had signed a contract with HSL for acquisition of five FSS in August 2023, with delivery commencing mid-2027. On induction, the FSS will bolster the 'Blue Water' capabilities of the Indian Navy through replenishment of Fleet ships at sea. The ships, with a displacement of more than 40,000 tons, will deliver fuel, water, ammunition and stores enabling prolonged deployments of the Fleet Ships, thereby enhancing the Fleet's strategic reach and mobility. In their secondary role, these ships would be equipped for Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations and Non-Combatant Evacuation Operations (NEO) for expeditious delivery of relief material and evacuation of personnel. With a completely indigenous design and sourcing of majority of the equipment from indigenous manufacturers, the FSS project will boost the Indian Shipbuilding Industry in consonance with the Union government's initiatives of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, Make in India and Make for the World.

Pre-arrest bail pleas of Ecstasy Realty's directors rejected in ₹600 crore financial fraud case

MUMBAI : A sessions court in Mumbai on Friday denied anticipatory bail to four directors of Ecstasy Realty Private Limited in a Rs 600 crore financial fraud case. Additional sessions judge NG Shukla rejected the pre-arrest bail pleas of Pulin Bole, Shivani Verma, Shobit Rajan and Pranav Bajaj. The reasoned order was not made available as yet. The Economic Offence Wing (EOW) had registered an FIR against Ecstasy Realty and its directors based on a complaint by Edelweiss Asset Reconstruction Company Limited ( EARCL ). As per the FIR, Rs 600 crore raised via secured Non-Convertible Debentures (NCDs) for a residential project was fraudulently siphoned off through layered transactions, benefiting promoters and related entities. The accused sought pre-arrest bail claiming they were innocent and contending that the FIR was registered with "the sole intention to harass and humiliate" them. No correct allegations are contained in the FIR, their pleas claimed. The FIR has been lodged after an "inexplicable and unjustifiable" delay for the alleged offence committed between March 2018 to March 2023, which suggests the allegations against them are an afterthought and have been falsely fabricated to implicate them, the plea added. The court, however, rejected their pleas.
