What do we know so far about China's advanced J-36 and J-50 fighter jets?

China's two next generation stealth
fighter jets – known as the Chengdu J-36 and the Shenyang J-50 – stunned the world when they seemingly emerged out of nowhere on December 26 last year.

Over the past six months,
more sightings and the resulting images and witness reports have given us an increasing amount of detail about the two advanced and yet mysterious aircraft. Here is what we know about them so far – as well as some of what we do not.

Chengdu J-36
Also nicknamed the 'Gingko leaf' because of its shape, the name of this aircraft, developed by the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation (CAIC), has never been officially disclosed.
It is known as
the J-36 because of the serial number '36011' that was painted on the prototype jet in the first images – similar to the initial
J-20 , which bore the number '2001'.
The J-36's distinctive diamond shape derives from its delta wing platform design, which could greatly reduce air drag when the plane is cruising at high speed. The aircraft is also distinctively tailless – essential for radar evasion.

Other unique aerodynamic features include trailing edge control surfaces per wing and split flaps close to the wingtips. These configurations further streamline the airframe while making up for the loss of manoeuvrability.

Huawei opens HarmonyOS 6 to developers, unveils AI agents and cloud architecture updates

Huawei Technologies has unveiled the latest version of its proprietary operating system (OS), HarmonyOS 6, new artificial intelligence (AI) models and its CloudMatrix 384 AI rack architecture, as the Chinese technology giant accelerates efforts to build out its in-house software ecosystem in the face of ongoing US sanctions. The company introduced a beta version of HarmonyOS 6 at its annual developer conference on Friday, highlighting new features such as AI agents. Richard Yu Chengdong, chairman of Huawei's consumer business group, said the update was now available to developers, but did not specify a launch date for consumers. Huawei has installed HarmonyOS 5 on more than 40 device models, with over 8 million developers registered in its ecosystem and more than 30,000 apps and 'atomic services' – mini programs that run without installation – now available, according to Yu. Still, he acknowledged that HarmonyOS trails Apple 's iOS and Google 's open-source Android in terms of global reach and app support. 'But the top 5,000 apps accounted for 99.9 per cent of consumer time spent' on Huawei devices, he said. The company also announced the HarmonyOS Agent Framework, a toolkit that will allow developers to create AI agents – programs that can perform tasks on behalf of users – without the need to build or train foundation models. More than 50 AI agents, including those from Chinese microblogging platform Weibo and audio platform Ximalaya, would be available when HarmonyOS 6 launches publicly, according to Huawei. Richard Yu Chengdong, chairman of Huawei's consumer business group, introduces the company's laptop with a foldable screen running HarmonyOS on May 19. Photo: Weibo In a further push into AI, Huawei unveiled its latest Pangu models, under version 5.5. The latest family of its AI models include a natural language processing model with 718 billion parameters and a computer vision model with 15 billion parameters. Parameters are a machine-learning term for variables present in an AI system during training.

Hong Kong's research strength is vital to China's third wave of reform

As Shenzhen approaches 45 years as a special economic zone (SEZ), the importance of opening up in driving China's progress was stressed by none other than Huawei Technologies founder Ren Zhengfei. 'The more open the country becomes, the more it will drive our progress,' he told People's Daily in a recent interview, speaking also of the importance of basic research, education and talent development. Soon after, the government outlined reforms to accelerate the development of hi-tech emerging industries in Shenzhen, highlighting the pioneering and demonstrative role of the reforms to push innovation and opening-up. Shenzhen has long been the vanguard of China's reform and opening-up. The decision to create the Shenzhen SEZ in the first wave of reform was groundbreaking and marked China's entry into global markets. The second wave of opening up kicked off with Deng Xiaoping's 1992 'southern tour' . China seized the opportunities presented by the post-Cold War wave of globalisation, breaking free of sanctions and restrictions. In 2001, China's accession to the World Trade Organization furthered its integration into the global economy, solidifying its position as a key player and laying the foundation for its rise as a major power. Today, however, China needs to enter a new phase of opening up – a third wave – and Shenzhen's latest reform agenda is viewed as a key precursor to this shift. China is facing a more complex and uncertain global environment, characterised by escalating geopolitical tensions, economic decoupling and a fierce technological cold war with the United States. Unlike previously, this new phase will require a strategic recalibration – focusing on technological innovation and talent cultivation.

China's top player Empyrean eyes opportunities from US chip curbs on design software

Chinese chip-design software company Empyrean Technology has pledged to become one of the world's top electronic design automation (EDA) providers, as new US export restrictions bring both opportunities and challenges to the domestic industry. Founded in 2009 and based in Beijing, Empyrean aims to ascend to the top tier of EDA providers, capitalising on the struggles faced by its US competitors in selling to China because of new export controls on chip-design software, said Yu Han, a senior market director at Empyrean, at the World Semiconductor Conference in Nanjing, capital of eastern Jiangsu province, on Friday. The remarks came after Cadence Design Systems, Synopsys and Siemens EDA – the three leading EDA suppliers that collectively hold about 80 per cent of the global market share – confirmed they had received notices from the US Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security regarding new export restrictions on software that could be used for developing advanced artificial intelligence chips. Those export controls have raised hopes among Chinese investors and analysts that local companies could seize new market opportunities. Besides Empyrean, other domestic EDA tool vendors, such as Primarius Technologies and Semitronix , have also garnered attention. Play Yu said China currently had over 100 domestic EDA companies, with Empyrean capturing half of that market share. He said Empyrean was the only Chinese company positioned among the second-tier global EDA providers, along with US firms Ansys and Keysight Technologies.
