TV and radio star slams the BBC for treating staff ‘like pets' saying ‘I'm leaving in September'

TV AND radio star Nihal Arthanayake has slammed the BBC for its lack of diversity - saying they treat staff "like pets".
The journalist 54, claims very few changes have been made over the last 12 months after having previously called the broadcaster out.

Taking to his Instagram, Nihal shared a video from his car as he spoke about his concerns and revealed he's set to leave in September.
Nihal said: "So today I walked into the BBC building in Salford and I was struck yet again, not for the first time, just how few black and Asian people work in that building and one thing that people have to understand is that when you walk into an environment where you just don't see anybody that looks like you, that has an effect.
"Since I called them out on it, well over a year ago, it seems like ain't a damn thing changed."
He captioned it: "I remember calling out BBC North on the lack of diversity in the building I worked in.
"I remember speaking to some of the black and Asian people who worked there and I kept hearing how isolating it was for them (not all obviously).
"It just struck me again today.
"It also reminded why I I'll be leaving in September. Have pondered whether to press 'share' on this, but as I am leaving anyway."
Yesterday, Nihal also shared a screengrab of a message from a BBC employer, who he has kept anonymous.
It read: "I'm not sure the BBC is a place for people of colour. I feel we get treated like 'pets' that we should be grateful, despite grafting for our positions and dare we speak out."

Alongside the claim, Nihal wrote: "Not sure I can disagree with these sentiments from someone who DM'd me about their experience of working at the BBC."
He added: "Had so many dms from people of colour who have worked or are still working at the BBC. BBC North is not an inclusive environment for people of colour. I am not the only one who thinks that."
A BBC spokesperson said: 'We're sorry if anyone feels this way, as creating an inclusive culture where everyone feels they belong is a big priority for us and we know we have further to go.
"Whilst we're proud of the diversity of the BBC, we remain committed to continuing to build a workforce that fully reflects and represents the whole of the UK.'
Last May, the Essex born journalist and former rap music promoter revealed he had left BBC 5 Live after eight years, with Times Radio presenter Matt Chorley replacing him.
Nihal currently hosts two interviews on Sunday evenings in a slot called Headliners with Nihal Arthanayake, which is also available as a podcast. He also occasionally presents Loose Ends on BBC Radio 4.
Just after he announced his BBC 5 Live exit, Nihal shared his next career move.
He said: "Hello everyone, some professional news from me.
"I am leaving daytimes on @bbc5live to concentrate on the aspect of broadcasting I love most, which is in depth long form interviews, which I will continue to do on @bbc5live on Sunday evenings and the Headliners Podcast.
"I also need more time to finish my second book! And have more time to do the things that I never seem to have time to.
"Thank you for being such an incredible audience for the last 8 years! My last daytime show will be 27th June. let's have a party."
He also worked on BBC Radio 1 from 2002 to 2014.
In April 2023 Nihal revealed his ordeal a 'drunk man' in Altrincham where he had been drinking with his wife and said he was racially abused.
In a shocking video posted on Twitter he said the man asked him if he was a doctor before calling him a p*** and using the n-word, a racist slur.
In November he admitted that working within an "overwhelmingly white" environment at the BBC depressed him, and said it had affected his mental health due to the lack of diversity.
He said: "It's really affecting me that I walk in and all I see is white people."

‘Glastonbury festival is like Wimbledon — even my dad watches it'

The Glastonbury festival has become as big as Wimbledon and the World Cup on TV, the head of the BBC's coverage has Rothery, who is the BBC's head of popular music for television, said the festival will be getting more coverage on BBC1 than ever this year, as all generations show increased interest in watching extended coverage of the musical acts at Worthy iPlayer viewers will be able to stream continuous coverage of the five main stages at the festival from midday until past midnight on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. 'It's a beast,' Rothery said of the festival. 'The interest in Glastonbury has extended over time, with people wanting more [coverage] leading into the festival and more after it. 'It's almost becoming a Glastonbury season now, more akin to a sporting event like Wimbledon or a World Cup. 'Linear TV is still the main go-to for our broad audience. The numbers continue to be really strong, which I think is partly to do with Glastonbury becoming our sort of Wimbledon of music.' Rothery said he puts the increasing interest down to an evolution in the festival's appeal. 'It's gone from the 1990s, when it was a brilliant festival but had a very specific demographic, to now being a very broad church, reflective of everybody,' he said. 'It's multigenerational. Even my dad watches it and he wasn't aware of it ten years ago.' This year BBC1 is scheduling more coverage of Glastonbury than ever before, Rothery said. 'We are also pushing longer sections of sets and even full sets on linear TV, whereas we used to be more highlights and bitesize bits of sets.'That is a big shift. There is a confidence that we can put a full set out and it will sustain a good audience.' Rothery said in recent years they had been getting 'millions' watching the live streams of the five main stages on each day of the festival. He said ways of reaching a younger demographic — which all broadcasters are chasing as they compete against the likes of YouTube and TikTok — have changed now that younger people consume music differently through sites such as Spotify, where the whole history of popular music sits in one place. 'In the old days, to reach a young audience we would normally want to put a young pop star on a stage to reach that demographic,' he said. 'That has totally changed. My 15-year-old daughter is a massive Billy Joel fan and loves The Clash. Audiences don't know or care how long these songs have been around, they are just great songs. 'Elton John [in 2023] gave us a massive young audience share and one of the youngest of the festival.' Deploying a drone shot at Glastonbury to show the audience the full scale of the record crowd for Elton's closing headline slot, the final show of his touring career, was a highlight for Rothery. Asked what makes a great Glastonbury festival TV moment, he said: 'Some of it is pre-planned, like having the surprise sets that the festival organises, to create those moments of excitement and intrigue, and sometimes it might just be great timing of an act being on. 'I have vivid memories of LCD Soundsystem playing All My Friends and seeing the sun setting, that was a special moment that only Glastonbury can do. 'Jay Z doing Wonderwall was a huge moment, or when Dave [the grime artist] got the guy out of the audience to do a rap, the audience had no expectation of that. 'Sometimes it's the audience's appreciation of the artist. When Dolly Parton did the legends slot, her reaction to seeing the audience know every word to Jolene, in cowboy hats, took her by such surprise and made it really special. 'When Brian Wilson did it, there were surfboards in the audience. It's the lengths Glastonbury people go to show their appreciation. 'It's a magic combo of things that cannot always be pre-planned.'

The 2025 season of ITV's long-running reality dating show began earlier this month and 16 contestants are currently housed in the villa. All the drama could be helping generate interest in the long-running show, however. While the 2025 season got off to a low viewership start when it launched on 9 June, the audience then reportedly grew by 1.7 million streams on ITVX after the first episode aired. ‌ Some past contestants have started campaigning for the series to be axed, however, and the show has a long history of being tied to the tragic mental health declines of past contestants. This weekend, Malin Andersson, who starred on the show in 2016, voiced her concerns about the way the series is made. She told The Mirror: "It should be axed. When I was on it, we were naive, it felt more organic – still scripted but more authentic. Even then, it wasn't pure, it was full of toxicity. Now millions watch it, especially young people, and their idea of love gets completely skewed." She added: "I felt disposable, like a piece of rubbish tossed aside. In there, you're fighting to be seen, to be a main character, seeking validation. It's not healthy – it creates unrealistic drama and messes up how viewers see love." Love Island has come under fire in the past for failing to support contestant that take part in the series - however, strict after care rules were introduced in 2019 after the deaths of former contestants Sophie Gradon and Mike Thalassitis.

Loose Women star expecting third grandchild as daughter announces pregnancy

Coleen Nolan's daughter, Ciara Fensome, is expecting her first child. The first time mum-to-be took to Instagram on Saturday (June 21) to share a stunning photo of herself cradling her growing bump.
