Borthwick backs George in co-captaincy role with Ford

However, with Itoje away on Lions duty where he will captain the touring side in Australia, Borthwick has gone back to the tried-and-tested with George set to lead the team for the game against a French XV on Saturday, working as a co-captain with Ford.
Borthwick explained that the two dovetail nicely in their leadership styles and having both in the joint position was 'the right way to go'.
'He's (George) really clear from a tactical point of view. He's got a brilliant voice. He has a fantastic feel and manner with people,' said Borthwick.
'Both of them are phenomenal players and both are brilliant, experienced leaders, both at club and international level.
'Whether they've been captains or vice-captains or not, they are leaders and they are role models for the rest of the players.
'I decided that was the right way to go, to have two great figureheads for this team.
'This week training, they complement each other superbly well, as you'll know from their different styles and different positions they play.
'That then gives us a figurehead in the forwards, a figurehead in the backs, leading the team.
'I've been really pleased with how it's gone.'
Ford and George come into the tour as two of the most experienced members of the squad, with a combined 200 England caps between them, having both missed out on selection for the Lions in May.
George, whilst not making the 38-man squad, has clearly remained in Farrell Snr's thinking and was called up to train with the Lions out in Portugal last week due to the absence of Dan Sheehan and Ronan Kelleher, both of whom were on Leinster duty in the URC Final.
Now back with England, the hooker reflected with pride on his third different Lions camp, despite the initial disappointment of missing out.
'I loved it,' he said.
'Me and George [Ford] are in the same boat. I was very disappointed not to be on the Tour in the first place, but to be given any opportunity to go in and show what you're about a little bit… It was a great opportunity for me to go out there. They're setting themselves up very nicely for a successful tour.'
And with England set to fly out to Argentina, the opponents of the Lions on Friday evening in Dublin, George revealed he was keenly observing everything that was going on, partly to help when he was back with his national side.
He added: 'There's a little bit more in it because they're playing Argentina tomorrow night and that's where our tour is going to be. As we were analysing in the Lions meetings, I was making sure I was making extra notes just to bring back about what I've seen. I think it's important.'
There is scope for the England squad to change should the Lions come calling, with Jack van Poortvliet currently away as scrum-half cover for the side with Jamison Gibson-Park not fully fit.
Borthwick remained tight-lipped about any potential return to the international fold for Owen Farrell, however, after he re-signed for Saracens this week following one season at Racing 92 in France, making him eligible for international duty once more.
'I think Owen has been very clear,' said Borthwick.
'He's happy to be home and he hasn't made any discussion around his future other than just wanting to get his family settled back in Hertfordshire.
'My focus is on these guys here.'
On the timescale regarding Van Poortvliet's return, Borthwick said he is due to be back next week but admitted that date could be subject to change and that the Leicester scrum-half would be fully supported if that were to be the case.
'Jack might well be at the game on Saturday afternoon, but if that changes from a Lions perspective, then we fully support Jack,' he added.
'We've also spoken very publicly that we want as many England players in that Lions squad as possible.

After Jackson, 24, was sent off again on Friday, in his side's 3-1 defeat to Flamengo at the Club World Cup, boss Enzo Maresca was asked about the striker's Chelsea future. The Italian, 45, said: "No, the red card has nothing to do with Nico's future. "He had the first one against Newcastle when Liam was not even here and another one. Eagles and Seagulls fear bigger predators in this summer's transfer window

Crystal Palace and Brighton may be fierce rivals on the football pitch but they are kindred spirits, if not best buddies, when it comes to transfer-window dealings. Both the Seagulls and Eagles are among the best at identifying raw talent and nurturing it into highly sought-after commodities which attract the rich. Brighton are especially adapt at selling their best players for a whopping profit and already having the perfect replacement ready to step up to the plate and make a telling first-team contribution. Albion owner Tony Bloom is exceptionally sharp at this and is just as successful in buying racehorses which become winners at high-profile meetings like the Cheltenham Festival and Royal Ascot. Brighton and Palace are joined by Brentford, Bournemouth, Fulham and others in selling fan favourites for big figures which are then reinvested in fresh faces who keep around the top half in the top flight. But clubs like this rarely sell more than one or two players in a window as they can't afford big turnovers which threaten to destabilise the dressing-room. The Eagles are constantly linked with moves for their star performers but Michael Olise was the only significant exit last summer when he moved to Bayern Munich for a hefty fee. This window, Eberechi Eze, Marc Guehi and Adam Wharton are among the players reportedly up for grabs from the FA Cup winners but they will be reluctant to sell too many with their first venture into Europe on the horizon. Guehi, who has interested Liverpool, Chelsea, Newcastle and Tottenham in the past 12 months, is now reported to be happy to see out the final year of his contract if the right club fails to make the right offer so Eze could be the one to go. Spurs are 3/1 with Unibet to buy him with a switch to any German club 6/1 with Bet Victor. A move to any French club is 12/1 with the same firm while Manchester City are 14/1 with Unibet to snap him up. Paddy Power, Betfair and Sky Bet have priced up 22/1 for a move to old Trafford but it's 4/6 with bet365 he stays where he is and Oliver Glasner is allowed to keep the jewel in his team's crown. Newcastle are 10/11 with the same firm to buy striker Joao Pedro from Brighton but Chelsea, who can't resist a shopping trip to the south coast, are 5/2 with bet365 to hijack the signing. Scotland's Jacob Fearnley has climbed into the top 50 in the world rankings and his confidence will be further boosted after reaching the quarter-finals at Queen's last week. More Trending The Edinburgh-born British No.2 progressed to the second round at Wimbledon on his debut last year and is 11/10 with William Hill to beat fifth seed Flavio Cobolli in the first round at Eastbourne. It was a decent Royal Ascot for us with True Love, American Affair, Field Of Gold and Trawlerman all successfully tipped to win in this column. But the best advice was Cercene to win Friday's Coronation Stakes at 33/1 which was given on X. Don't miss out at future festivals like Glorious Goodwood, follow @tipstermetro. Inside the Lions' critical plan to avoid issues that hit so hard eight years ago

Inside the Lions' critical plan to avoid issues that hit so hard eight years ago Perth is seven hours ahead of UK time and sleep experts have curated a thorough plan to adjust ahead of their arrival British and Irish Lions players form a huddle before the Lions 1888 Cup match at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin (Image: Niall Carson/PA Wire. ) The first challenge the British & Irish Lions face in Australia won't be Western Force, but the jet lag that shook the squad eight years ago. On the 2017 tour of New Zealand, Lions players were so affected by it that some fell asleep on the bus to the first game against New Zealand Barbarians. This was largely due to the fact they had arrived just three days before. In 2025, however, an all-encompassing framework to tackle the effects of jet lag has been devised, reports The Telegraph. ‌ To ensure they hit the ground running Down Under, the Lions have have teamed up with sleep specialists Resmed. Lions staff Ben Pollard, Aled Walters and Graeme Close will oversee the operation. ‌ Food timing and food itself has been taken into consideration, along with immune system protection, sleep monitoring and avoiding alcohol. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby. "The sleep and jet-lag plans are a critical aspect of how well we hit the ground running in Australia," said head of athletic performance Walters. "Everyone will expect the performance in Perth. No one will think 'but that was probably due to jet lag'. So that's why what these guys have done is critical." Article continues below Lions head of athletic performance Aled Walters. (Image: (Photo by) ) "What we know from the science is that it typically takes a day and a half to adjust per time zone," said head of performance nutrition Close. "But what we can do is put the science into it and we can get that done in about three to four days. So if we get everything right, we can be completely adapted, ready to rip in for game one." ‌ Close even added that feeding time matters to players, and the type of food too. He explains that providing a more brunch-style meal at 8am to trick the body into thinking it's seven hours ahead. Also on the food agenda is ensuring players do not over-eat. Close explains that the most common cause for constipation after a flight is eating too much, because the body "doesn't really like a lot of food when you're not moving very much". As well as this, on their flight to Australia, the airline were asked to provide breakfast when it's morning time in Perth, as well as to adjust the lighting to co-ordinate with the time Down Under. ‌ Also on the flight, players were asked to change their watches to Perth time, and as part of the advice given to them on the plane, there were even caffeine cut-off times. When it comes to the immune system, players need to be in peak condition ahead of the first touring match. Therefore, Lions have been given immune support packages which include chewing gum to increase saliva production, which protects the body from picking up infections. Immune support also spills into the food players eat, too. First-defence nasal sprays were also provided to players to protect them from picking up anything dodgy. ‌ Despite alcohol being a popular fixture in famous Lions tales, especially when it comes to player bonding, it is off limits ahead of their travel to Australia. Close explains that any more than four units of alcohol can impair sleep. "We've all done it when we've had a skinful," he said. "You might get off to sleep quickly, but you're waking up quite often during the night. We know that alcohol does impair sleep. It also puts some stress on the immune system as well. And in excess, it's a diuretic, so it will dehydrate you. So, you put all that together and it's probably not a good thing." ‌ Measures will also be taken to manipulate the circadian rhythm (the body's natural sleep-wake cycle) of players. This will take into account light exposure, social times and training times. Pollard adds that players will be asked to not check their phones if they wake in the middle of the night, which would expose them to stimulating blue light. Also, before bed, players are encouraged to take a hot shower. The body falls asleep by a fall in core temperature, and Pollard says you can artificially achieve this with a hot shower. Player sleep will be monitored using Whoop wristbands. Walters explains the statistics from these bands will be used to inform coaches. Article continues below "If we see a trend, if 80 per cent of the players have had a terrible sleep that's something we have to inform the coaches of," he said. "Because they will be more susceptible to those little injuries and you are going, 'is this really how we are going to start the tour?'" Walters says. "The flip side is, if 80 per cent of the squad are sleeping beautifully like babies, that we'd be able to go 'we can probably be a bit more aggressive'." Having played their opener against Argentina in Dublin on Friday night, which resulted in a loss against a quality Pumas outfit, the Australia tour begins against Western Force on June 28 at Optus Stadium.
