MB: Kemas to serve as launchpad for Bangsa Johor pilot schools

KLUANG: Johor has begun aligning Kemas preschools as feeder institutions for the state's flagship Sekolah Rintis Bangsa Johor (SRBJ), a move that marks a major shift in early childhood education.
Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the alignment will involve curriculum coordination, particularly the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) elements.
"This transformation will elevate Johor's preschool education to a more competitive and future-ready level," he said after the Kemas Johor 2025 Madani Community Empowerment Programme launch at Dewan Muafakat in Simpang Renggam here yesterday (June 3).
More than 1,500 Kemas EMAS personnel from across the state attended the event.
The Bangsa Johor pilot school initiative, launched in 2022, aims to create a holistic and identity-driven education system tailored for Johor students.
SRBJ schools emphasise unity, academic excellence and values-based learning rooted in local identity.
To support the integration effort, the Johor government allocated RM1.5 million to upgrade Kemas-operated preschools and kindergartens, with another RM1.8 million channelled into the Iqra' and Fardu Ain programme to strengthen religious education.
Onn Hafiz also presented the Kemas Outstanding Educator Award to two long-serving educators for their contribution to early childhood development in the state.
"Johor remains committed to shaping a generation that is not only knowledgeable but also rooted in values," he said.
Kemas preschools are part of the early childhood education programme offered by the Community Development Department in the country.
They provide early education for children aged 4 to 6 years, preparing them for primary school, and fostering social and communication skills. Kemas also operates nurseries for children aged 2 to 4.

222 Johor projects worth RM10b yet to start, says MB

JOHOR BARU: Johor has 222 projects scheduled between 2016 and 2024 that have yet to commence. The projects, worth around RM10 billion, include various public facilities such as roads, mosques, hospitals and clinics, said Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi. "When I ask in meetings, they say, 'Don't worry, we'll check with the respective ministries, we'll get it approved.' "All these projects are for the people, but they still haven't started," he said in his speech at the 2025 Umno Tebrau division delegates' meeting here on Saturday. Onn Hafiz, who is also the Johor Umno liaison chairman, said Umno leaders in the state risk incurring public anger if the projects are not implemented. "Council members, village heads, community leaders – don't just attend meetings to look good. "If the projects don't go through, if the allocations are not used properly and appropriately, let me ask – who will the people be angry with? "At the agency? Or at the Umno leaders? They will be angry with us. That's why we need to go down to the ground and inspect things ourselves," he said. The Machap assemblyman said the federal government should place its trust in the state leadership to approve and implement projects in Johor. He suggested that the federal government initiate a pilot programme with Johor to evaluate the proposal's effectiveness. "If you don't want to implement it nationwide, make Johor the pilot state. "Insya-Allah, the Umno and Barisan Nasional leaders in Johor can be trusted and will shoulder these responsibilities for religion, race and homeland," he said. Onn Hafiz expressed disappointment at the lack of implementation. "I don't like making people angry. "But when it comes to the welfare of the people, don't test me. I will fight all the way for the people – for the people of Johor. That is the spirit of Johor Umno. "What we say is not just rhetoric. If we say it, Insya-Allah, we will deliver it," he said. Sembrong Umno calls for Hishammuddin's return as Onn Hafiz vows to raise motion with party leadership

KLUANG, June 21 – The Sembrong Umno division today reportedly passed a motion calling for the reinstatement of its former chief, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, into the party's leadership. Johor Umno chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, who officiated the division's annual meeting, said he would bring the proposal to the party's top leadership for consideration. 'Sembrong is not just a political area, it is where I first learned the meaning of struggle. And the person who brought me here was Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein,' he was quoted saying by Utusan Malaysia. 'I was informed of the motion urging the Umno leadership to reconsider accepting him back into the Sembrong division. God willing, as Johor Umno chairman, I will bring this motion to the top leadership.' Onn Hafiz, who is also the Johor menteri besar, said the motion reflected grassroots appreciation for Hishammuddin's leadership. In January 2023, Umno Supeme Council decided to internally purge itself of critics — resulting in 44 party members being exiled and four members being given a suspension. Sembrong MP Hishammuddin was suspended for six years, reportedly for being the main driver behind the Barisan Nasional MPs signing statutory declarations backing Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister. Among the 44 sacked were former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin and former Selangor Tan Sri Noh Omar, while former Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan was also given a six-year suspension.

SST on imported goods up for review

Nice to meet you: Ahmad Zahid shaking hands with a member of Kemas during the Teachers Day celebration. — Bernama BANGI: The expansion of the Sales and Services Tax (SST) on several imported goods, including fruits such as apple and mandarin oranges will be reviewed, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The Deputy Prime Minister said the decision to impose the SST of between 5% and 10% on fruits not produced locally should be considered. 'I believe it is reasonable for (the new SST rate on certain goods) to be reviewed and I think there will be an adjustment on certain materials to be categorised as taxable. '(But) don't take that conclusively,' he said after officiating the Community Development Department (Kemas) Teachers Day celebration yesterday. Earlier, Mydin Holdings Bhd managing director Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin Mohamed described the move to impose SST on imported fruit as unreasonable because it also affects low-income consumers. Ahmad Zahid said the views put forward by Ameer Ali should be brought to the Cabinet meeting as it touches on the people's needs for imported fruits. 'The revenue from fruit tax to the country is not that high. If SST is imposed, the price will increase,' Ahmad Zahid said, Bernama reported. 'I know the purpose (of imposing SST on imported fruits) is to protect local fruits but we do not produce apples and mandarin oranges. I am sure the Finance Ministry and the Economy Ministry are also looking into the matter,' he added On June 9, the government announced a targeted review of the SST rate which will take effect from July 1. The sales tax rate will remain the same for essential goods, while a rate of 5% or 10% will be imposed on non-essential or discretionary goods. The scope of service tax has also been expanded to cover six new services such as rental or leasing, construction, finance, private healthcare, education and beauty.
