The Latest Ford Bronco's Airbags Could Hit Too Hard

Ford Bronco Facing Airbag Recall The 2025 Ford Bronco has just been recalled, and unfortunately, it's for a physical fault that could reduce safety. According to recall documents filed with the NHTSA, 'the active vent flap on the passenger side may prevent the airbag from deploying as intended.' This recall covers 2,272 Broncos, and while it's not good news, owners can at least take comfort in the knowledge that this isn't nearly as serious as the Takata airbag fault that continues to plague numerous unrecalled vehicles from manufacturers around the world, and this air bag is made by a completely different company. 0:07 / 0:09 Audi A5 replaces A4: So, what's changed? Watch More The Airbag May Not Cushion Impacts Properly Source: Ford The NHTSA says that if the active vent flap of the passenger airbag doesn't open during a crash, 'the internal cushion pressure will not decrease as rapidly as designed, resulting in a higher-pressure cushion interacting with an occupant.' In other words, the component meant to safely prevent an occupant's head from hitting the dashboard could well injure them instead. The problem was discovered during routine testing by Michigan-based airbag supplier Joyson Safety Systems, which flagged the issue with Ford. Problems with testing led the supplier to a plastic flange holding the micro gas generator responsible for inflating the airbag in place. This flange may break when the airbag is activated, and this may interfere with the active vent flap. Over A Quarter Of Broncos Are Affected Source: Ford Of the 2,272 Broncos impacted by this recall, only 28% are expected to have the fault. Ford will begin sending interim notification letters on June 28. A second will be sent when the remedy is ready to be installed, but Ford has not provided an estimated timeline for when this will happen. Once the new parts are available, dealers will replace the airbag module at no cost to owners. As we've noted before, Ford has been working hard to overcome quality control issues, and there's still plenty to improve on, but at least this time, it doesn't appear to be something that Ford missed under its own roof. Happily, no warranty claims or customer complaints have been lodged, so the issue hasn't caused any serious damage yet. About the Author Sebastian Cenizo View Profile

F1 movie star Pitt finally gets to drive a Formula One car

June 20 (Reuters) - Brad Pitt, whose new F1 movie is out next week, has now driven a Formula One car for real after testing a McLaren at Austin's Circuit of the Americas. The reigning world champions confirmed the Hollywood A lister drove a 2023 McLaren MCL60 car at the Texas track on Thursday. Media reports said the British-based team had been carrying out a private test with F1 regular Lando Norris and F2 driver Alex Dunne. It was the first time 61-year-old Pitt, who plays the fictional racing driver Sonny Hayes in the Apple Originals movie, had driven a real Formula One car on track. The cars used in the making of the film were Formula Two cars, modified by Mercedes to look like real grand prix racers. Champions McLaren had teased the drive on Thursday with a social media post of overalls with the initials BP and the caption "It's a Sonny day in Austin". Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton, a co-producer of the movie, said in March that Pitt had shown real speed while testing the F2 cars. "Watching Brad drive around at speeds over 180 miles an hour was really impressive to see because it's not something you can just learn overnight," he said. "The dedication and the focus that Brad put into this process has been amazing to witness."

Senate parliamentarian rejects Republican bid to reverse Biden vehicle rules

WASHINGTON, June 20 (Reuters) - Senate Republicans cannot use a fast-track procedure to overturn landmark rules to drastically reduce vehicle tailpipe emissions and boost EV sales as part of a tax and budget bill, the Senate parliamentarian ruled on Friday. Republicans and President Donald Trump have taken aim at EVs on a number of fronts, a u-turn from former President Joe Biden's policy that encouraged EVs and renewable energy to fight climate change and reduce emissions. The Environmental Protection Agency under Biden in 2024 set stringent vehicle emissions rules that aim to cut fleetwide tailpipe emissions for cars and light trucks by nearly 50% over 2026 levels in 2032 and drastically increase new electric vehicles. The EPA forecast last year that between 35% and 56% of new vehicles sold between 2030 and 2032 would be electric to meet tough vehicle pollution rules. Senate Republicans also want to reverse the EPA rule's new emissions limits for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles like delivery trucks, garbage trucks, public utility trucks, school buses and tractor-trailers. The Senate parliamentarian ruled rolling back the EPA rules would need 60 votes to pass in the 100-seat chamber, rather than the simple majority other elements of the tax and spending package would need under a complex budget process Republicans are invoking to bypass Democratic opposition. The regulation was among the most significant environmental rules implemented under Biden, who made tackling climate change a key pillar of his presidency. Senate Republicans on Monday proposed ending the $7,500 tax credit on new EV sales six months after the tax and budget bill measure is signed into law and quickly phasing out out used EV credits. Republicans have also proposed eliminating fines for failing to meet Corporate Average Fuel Economy rules, which would effectively end a 50-year-old program that requires automakers to build more efficient vehicles. Trump last week signed a resolution approved by Congress to bar California's landmark plan to end the sale of gasoline-only vehicles by 2035, which has been adopted by 11 other states representing a third of the U.S. auto market. Trump also signed resolutions to reverse new heavy duty vehicle emissions limits. General Motors, Toyota and other automakers have lobbied Congress to rollback emissions rules.
