Marantz Unveils Two New Reference-Quality Home Theater Components
Premium AV and Hi-Fi audio brand Marantz has today taken the wraps off a pair of new additions to its 'reference-quality' component range in the shape of the AV 20 AV pre-amp and AMP 20 power amplifier.
Designed to join and complement the award-winning AV 10 pre-amp, AMP 10 power amp and CINEMA 30 AVR product family, the AV 20 and AMP 20 expand the variety of system configurations Marantz's high-end product range can support. Both new units are manufactured at the brand's premium factory, the Shirakawa Audio Works in Japan, and have been meticulously honed and refined by a Marantz Sound Master (a select group of experts within Marantz who are considered to have a particularly high level of listening expertise and judgment they can apply to tuning premium products).

The AV 20 and AMP 20 both sport the latest iteration of Marantz's iconic 'porthole display' design, together with selectable side illumination, applied to an uncompromising build quality based on a multi-layer, copper-heavy chassis. The new devices' remote controls are made from aluminium, too, as well as offering button backlighting to make them easy to use in dark rooms. Let's get next into the specifics of each model.
The AV 20 carries the latest and most powerful Analog Devices SHARC Dual-core DSP chipset, partnered with uncompromising 32-bit two-channel DACs with dedicated jitter reduction.
This ensures that the AV 20 can precisely decode and process every possible form of incoming audio technology, including the most high-resolution stereo formats and every current form of immersive audio, including Dolby Atmos, IMAX Enhanced, DTS:X Pro and AURO-3D.
The AV 20's premium processing system has been combined with the Audyssey MultEQ XT32 advanced room optimization system, which automatically calibrates sound to take into account your sound system's speaker sizes, speaker distances, level adjustment and many more factors besides. All with a focus, of course, on making sure the AV 20 is able to adapt its audio mastery to as wide a range of speakers and listening environments as possible.

Marantz has also equipped the AV 20 with Dirac Live Room Correction plus the Dirac Live Bass Control, enabling you to integrate up to four separated and fully optimized subwoofers into your sound system. Plus, for the first time in a Marantz product, the AV 20 will eventually (following an upcoming firmware update) carry the Dirac Live Active Room Treatment (ARC) technology that's claimed to create an unprecedentedly cohesive and tonally consistent listening experience.
The AV 20 carries seven HDMI inputs all capable of supporting video feeds up to 8K/60Hz or 4K/120Hz, as well as multiple analog and digital inputs and an expansive range of custom installation-optimized features that enable it to adapt to pretty much any scale of set up, from relatively small media rooms to large home theater installations.
The AV 20's discrete HDAM SA-3 preamplifier stage feeds up to 13.4 channels using either RCA or XLR outputs and, finally, the AV 20 supports the latest HEOS multi-room platform, making it as easy as possible to access content streamed through Roon, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth.
Finally, the AV 20 uses a fold-down front panel on its fascia to hide its relatively less-used controls, to retain that distinctive premium Marantz porthole look.

The AMP 20 is configured to deliver up to 12 channels of power with 200W per channel (8ohms, 1kHz, THD 0.05% with two channels driven). It also allows users to reconfigure pairs of 200W amp channels into bridged-tied-load (BTL) outputs, delivering up to six channels of 400W if you're lucky enough to have a speaker system that might benefit from that. Or you can opt to bi-amp up to six speakers, with both XLR and RCA inputs available.
Other examples of how the AMP 20 might be used are as a powerful amplifier upgrade for owners of Marantz's CINEMA 30 AVR, or as a complement to AV 10 preamplifiers, where fewer channels of power are required. (Similarly, AV 20 buyers could, say, opt to buy the 16-channel AMP 10 Power Amplifier instead of the AMP 20 if they require more than the 12 channels of power offered by the AMP 20.)
The Marantz AV20 and AMP 20 are both available to buy from today from selected retailers, with each product available for $6,500 in the U.S., €5,500 in Europe and £4,750 in the U.K.

Many believe or are led to believe a future smart city or an existing one that's so remodelled would enhance affordability and sustainability. But will it? To answer that, grasping the concept first should be the right starting point. In that respect, if assertions by the likes of Microsoft and IBM are taken at face value, a smart city is one that utilizes digital information and communication technology to enhance various aspects of urban life, from infrastructure to public services, citizen engagement to city tax receipts. This may involve using artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, and more, to improve operational efficiency, sustainability, and the overall quality of life for city dwellers. But will it? There are legitimate fears that AI is, might be, redesigning our cities by stealth from real-team adjustable traffic lights to computer generated digital twins mimicking what whole neighborhoods would potentially look like before even a single brick has been laid. Furthermore, all that kit and its deployment can't be cheap and someone has to pay for it, cue the taxpayer. The concept of smart cities came to fore at the Abu Dhabi Infrastructure Summit, held in the Emirate from June 17 to 18, 2025, and evoked mixed emotions from attendees albeit with numerous examples of successes. For instance, Singapore's holistic balance of economic growth and social inclusivity, or Copenhagen's Nordhavn district's 5-minute city model, or for that matter Abu Dhabi's own Masdar City which balances heritage, innovation and sustainability, given it is backed by the Emirate's global renewable energy champion Masdar. Such innovative cities claim to promote a strong sense of place and identity for their residents and community. But their affluence in many ways sets them apart too. Can their experience and inexorable march to 'smarter' ways be replicated elsewhere? The answer is a complex one, according to Daniel Liu, executive director of MORROW Intelligence, a Singapore-based urban advisory firm. ADIS 'Smart technologies that bring efficiencies are of immense importance and they are all very important evolutions of city management. But smart cities don't come before cities," Liu said at summit panel. "These are cities with their individual socioeconomic and investment parameters and critical municipal issues that need to be resolved. So, not all urban planners enjoy some of the advantages that say Singapore or Copenhagen would.' Liu added that if the ultimate goal of planners and developers was urban excellence, it is something that doesn't exist in a vacuum. 'Issues of economic and social development cannot be sidestepped. This will likely be a journey of over 30 to 50 years marked by evolving challenges for many cities in the world.' Smart Decisions Needed Too Discovering urban excellence, and a smarter future, might in many cases bottle down to making smart decisions and not just smart technology, said Emre Arolat, founding partner and principal, Emre Arolat Architecture. 'The best cities are those with a sense of community and harmony where there's access to housing, and perhaps the ability to reach life's essentials within a 15 minute walk or a bicycle ride, if not 5 minutes as noted in Danish city. That's a reasonable metric already at play in many urban centers, (e.g. some suburbs in Paris) and its down to smart thinking and building.' Affordable housing needs to be at the heart of it all and its something that can never be ignored. 'But building affordable housing doesn't mean you have to sacrifice building high value real estate or vice versa if planners work on concepts strategically,' he added. And local, provincial or Federal governments around the world can be the arbiters of where future demand may or may not be, so that the challenge can be met in a systematic way, even if the planning and decision making stage is aided by the deployment of digital tools. Powering Up Smart Cities With there being rising clamor for sustainability, the carbon footprint of the smart cities will also be called into sharp focus. The more digital and connected they are, the more electricity they'll consume, and the bigger the call might be on the power grids servicing them. Quite like the data center conundrum of powering new age technology and consumer needs with fossil fuels has already reared its head. For, just like hyperscale data centers will be increasingly serviced by power generated from natural gas for decades, so will smart cities for a considerable amount of time. Therefore, any lowering of the carbon footprint achieve via digital connectivity and efficiency might well be negated by carbon emissions from the chosen power source. Abu Dhabi's renewables-powered Masdar City offers a rare example to the contrary, alongside many European, especially Scandinavian and German mid-sized townships. But renewables-powered smart cities largely remain a pipe dream. This matters, because cities represent nearly 80% of the world's consumption, and by that argument nearly 80% of the world's carbon emissions. It is also indicative of the fact that urbanization is proliferating and is unlikely to be reversed. So, the fight against climate change as well as improving living standards probably would be won or lost in the cities, whether they are smart cities or not. Yum China unveils AI tool in a bid to boost efficiency
(Reuters) -Yum China Holdings said on Friday it has launched a new AI-enabled hands-free assistant tool at certain KFC stores in a bid to boost efficiency. The company, which operates Yum Brands' franchises including Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, said the tool, named Q-Smart, is aimed at supporting restaurant managers in tasks such as staff scheduling, inventory management, and food quality inspection. The launch follows its former parent Yum's AI-driven initiatives, including the Byte by Yum! software it launched in February, aimed at reducing wait times at restaurants and improving delivery times. Yum China said the pilot phase will lead to a larger scale roll-out of Q-Smart in the future, following incorporation of user feedback.
