Minister Janardhan Reddy flags off boat marathon, unveils roadmap to boost inland waterways in Andhra Pradesh
VIJAYAWADA: Minister for Roads & Buildings and Infrastructure and Investments BC Janardhan Reddy on Monday flagged off the 'Boat Marathon' at Punnami Ghat, marking the second formation day of the Andhra Pradesh Inland Waterway Authority (APIWA).
Addressing the mediapersons, the Minister said the TDP-led alliance government under the leadership of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is committed to promoting tourism integrated with water transport in the State. He noted that the government is exploring all possible avenues to develop inland waterways by leveraging the extensive coastline and river basins across AP.
'We will enhance the water transport system under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to ensure efficient operations. An action plan is being formulated to attract large-scale investments in this sector, generating employment and livelihood opportunities for the youth,' he said.
Highlighting the low cost of inland water transport compared to road and rail, the Minister said a report on existing routes and the untapped potential of water transport will be submitted to the Chief Minister, following which necessary steps will be taken. He said the government aims to triple the existing water transport routes to spur economic growth. Plans are in place to develop waterways from the upstream of Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada to Amaravati. Inland navigation will be introduced in Krishna and Godavari rivers, and in irrigation canals.
'Increasing exports and imports via waterways will significantly reduce pressure on road and rail networks,' he added. APIWA Chairman Dr Z Siva Prasad, AP Tourism Development Corporation Chairman Nookasani Balaji, AP Maritime Board Chairman Damacharla Sathya, and the corporation's CEO Raghava Rao were present.

He was speaking at the Ports and Logistics Conference, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry in Visakhapatnam on Friday. The conference focused on unlocking the state's port potential, improving last-mile connectivity and promoting multimodal logistics integration. The Minister highlighted that Andhra Pradesh's ports now contributed over 5 per cent to the state's GSDP, supporting nearly one million jobs. Visakhapatnam Port alone handled 82.62 million tonnes in FY 2024–25, while the Krishnapatnam and Gangavaram ports together handled over 54 million tonnes, reflecting robust growth and private participation. The Minister observed that the government was investing over Rs.20,000 crore to improve connectivity through 1,040-km of new highways and major corridors like Badvel-Nellore and the VCIC rail line. 'Andhra Pradesh wants to cut logistics costs by half with Rs.20,000 crore infrastructure push,' the Minister underlined. The Chairman of Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board D, Satyanarayana, highlighted that Andhra Pradesh was strategically building a robust port-led development model with six operational ports and three new greenfield ports at Machilipatnam, Ramayapatnam, and Bhavanapadu. He shared that these were not being developed in isolation, but as part of integrated logistics and industrial corridors, fully connected through road, rail, and multimodal networks. The Chairperson of Visakhapatnam Port Authority, M Angamuthu, emphasised that Andhra Pradesh had the right foundations to emerge as a maritime entrepreneurship hub, with its strategic location, proactive governance, and well-established port network. He noted that most major ports in the state were currently operating at just 50 per cent capacity, indicating significant untapped potential. The Chairman of CII, G Murali Krishna, highlighted that ports were no longer just trade enablers but strategic national assets influencing diplomacy, jobs, and regional growth. He shared that Andhra Pradesh's balanced economy and strong policy incentives had already attracted Rs.9.2 lakh crore in investments.

Pushpa 2 dialogue on YSRCP placard sparks row
A placard with a line from Pushpa 2, which a YSRCP worker held up during party chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy's visit to Palnadu, has created a political controversy, with the Andhra Pradesh Home Minister criticising Jagan over the 'violent' message written on it. Jagan defended the placard, saying it was not meant to be violent and asked, 'So, now you can't even quote a line from a movie?' The placard, held up by YSRCP worker T Raviteja on Wednesday, said: 'When YSRCP comes to power in 2029', and below that, 'rapa rapa narukuta'. The Telugu words were part of a line delivered by Allu Arjun in Pushpa 2. It translates to 'cut them down, one by one'. Police in Palnadu said they registered a case against Raviteja and have taken him into custody. Andhra Pradesh Home Minister V Anitha accused Jagan of encouraging such 'violent' statements. Anitha said the message on the placard implied that if YSRCP comes to power, the heads of TDP leaders and workers would be cut off. 'These YSRCP workers display such violent signs because their leader encourages it and uses such language. It is offensive and a violent threat,'' Anitha said. Jagan hit back, saying that the TDP-led NDA government in the state was finding everything offensive and objectionable. 'So, now you cannot even quote a line from a movie? Are we still living in a democracy?' Jagan also said the YSRCP worker in question was previously with the TDP. 'He got fed up with the unfulfilled promises of the TDP and its leadership and joined the YSRCP, and expressed his resentment. This government finds that offensive,' the former chief minister said. Referring to restrictions put on his visit to Palnadu on Wednesday, and the June 11 attack on his convoy allegedly by TDP workers at Podili, Jagan said on Friday that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was scared about 'failure in governance'. 'His impatience is being manifested in diversion politics and foisting false cases against political opponents,' Jagan said. He also claimed that he had received an overwhelming response to his tours. 'Chandrababu has been showing the traits of a dictator by trying to suppress any dissent and gag the voices of those who question the misuse of police. The modus operandi is to catch the small fry, use coercion to seek confessions and file cases against popular YSRCP leaders, unmindful of the fact that people can see through his game,' Jagan said. Chief Minister Naidu, however, chided Jagan for creating problems for the police during his visit to Rentapalla village in Palnadu district. 'Police gave permission for a few vehicles in Jagan's convoy and for 100 people to gather. Ignoring rules and regulations, he entered narrow lanes and created stampede-like situations. Jagan and YSRCP should remember why people gave them only 11 seats — it is due to this kind of dirty tricks,' Naidu said. The CM also said Jagan was siding with drug peddlers, liquor smugglers, and gamblers, and accused YSRCP leaders of unveiling statues of criminals in villages. On Wednesday, Jagan had visited the residence of former deputy sarpanch Korlakunta Nagamalleswara Rao. YSRCP alleges that he was driven to suicide by harassment from the police and the ruling TDP.
