Malaysia-Taiwan trade surges 36.8% to RM92.77b in first five months of 2025
KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia-Taiwan trade has flourished with bilateral trade surging by 36.8 per cent to RM92.77 billion in the first five months of this year, said Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE).
MATRADE China, Northeast Asia, ASEAN and Oceania director Mazlan Harun said Malaysia's exports to Taiwan stood at RM32.30 billion while imports surged to RM60.47 billion during this period, marking growth rates of 30.6 per cent and 40.3 per cent, respectively, a continuing positive momentum in 2024.
'The trade composition underscores a high degree of industrial complementarity, particularly in electrical and electronic products, optical and scientific equipment and petroleum-based goods, reflecting both economies' strategic roles in regional and global value chains,' he said in his opening remarks at the Taiwan Expo 2025 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today.
He said while trade figures reflect strong performance, it is the tangible business opportunities that truly drive the partnership forward.
'Taiwan's strengths in innovation, product development and manufacturing offer practical entry points for Malaysian companies, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), to explore partnerships and build supply chain connections.
'At the same time, Malaysia's capabilities in halal products, food and beverage, and smart manufacturing, combined with its strategic position as a gateway to ASEAN and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation markets, provide Taiwanese businesses with promising prospects for expansion,' he said.
He said this shared potential continues to strengthen the foundation for long-term business growth and cooperation, particularly through platforms such as the Taiwan Expo.
'As we chart the path forward, MATRADE remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting impactful trade engagements and nurturing commercially viable, long-term partnerships.
'With an office in Taipei, MATRADE is well-positioned to facilitate closer business linkages. We believe Taiwan Expo 2025 will open new doors for growth and innovation, while further deepening the trust and goodwill that have long characterised Malaysia–Taiwan relations,' he added. — BERNAMA

Malaysia inks landmark trade deal with EFTA nations
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member states have signed an economic partnership agreement, marking a new chapter for trade, investment and economic relations with Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. The Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) said both Malaysia and the EFTA member states also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation and capacity building, as well as a joint statement on sustainable palm oil. Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Aziz, said it is important for Malaysia, as a trading nation, to maintain its neutral and non-aligned stance, particularly in the face of current geopolitical uncertainties that complicate the global trading landscape. He said the unwavering neutrality and non-alignment is also reflected in the signing of the Malaysia-European Free Trade Association Economic Partnership Agreement (MEEPA). He noted that it is the country's 18th free trade agreement (FTA) thus far, and is part of an enhanced attempt to diversify markets amidst global economic uncertainties. "As Malaysia's first FTA with several European countries, the MEEPA is also expected to pave the way for expedited Malaysia-EU FTA negotiations. "The trade potential to be realised will provide more business opportunities for local companies, including small and medium enterprises, and offer higher-paying jobs for Malaysians – both key in driving our economic transformation agenda," he said in a statement. The MEEPA was signed by Tengku Zafrul and his counterparts representing Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. MEEPA covers goods, services, investments, intellectual property rights, customs facilitation, competition policy, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, trade and sustainable development, government procurement and economic cooperation. MITI said it is expected to bring new export opportunities and enable Malaysia to continue attracting high-technology and knowledge-based investments from these four non-EU member countries. Upon entry into force, the agreement guarantees long-term duty-free access for over 90 per cent of Malaysia's exports to the four signatory countries. This includes all industrial products and secures benefits that were previously available under the temporary Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) scheme. In 2024, Malaysia's trade with the EFTA was valued at RM14.4 billion, with over 85 per cent of its exports to these countries being industrial products covering electrical and electronics, optical and scientific instruments, metal products, plastics and rubber-based products. Switzerland accounted for over 80 per cent of trade, amounting to RM12.2 billion, followed by Norway at RM2.1 billion. Cumulatively, Switzerland, Norway and Liechtenstein have invested RM14.2 billion in Malaysia, resulting in the creation of over 24,000 job opportunities. A prime example is Lembaga Koko Malaysia's collaboration with the renowned Swiss-based company Nestlé to develop KitKat Dark Borneo, a premium single-origin chocolate crafted exclusively from Malaysian cocoa beans. In the area of services, Malaysian professionals, encompassing accountants, auditors, lawyers, physiotherapists, nurses and teachers, are expected to benefit from enhanced access and mobility through transparent rules in the EFTA markets. The agreement includes a strong agenda for cooperation and capacity building, focusing on engineering, technology, green mobility, digitalisation, pharmaceuticals, and human capital development through training and exchanges. During the MEEPA signing, Tengku Zafrul also witnessed the MoU exchange between Universiti Teknologi Petronas and two Norwegian universities, namely the University of South-Eastern Norway and the University of Stavanger. The initiative seeks to foster academic collaboration and specialised expertise in hydrogen technology, carbon capture and storage, as well as in related fields across the oil, gas, marine and shipping, and renewable energy sectors. The collaborative ventures are expected to contribute towards the sustainable development of a skilled talent pool and long-term growth of industries by enhancing the quality of Malaysia's higher education and translational research.

'Nonetheless, we see the high crude oil price will instigate more buying activities in the oil and gas stocks. Meanwhile, UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd's head of investment research Mohd Sedek Jantan said investors' focus may shift towards Malaysia's May inflation data, scheduled for release tomorrow, which is expected to remain stable. Mavcom to be absorbed by CAAM on Aug 1
Transport minister Loke Siew Fook said all 57 Mavcom staff would be offered positions in CAAM, based on their experience and qualifications. PUTRAJAYA : The Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) will be dissolved and integrated into the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) from Aug 1, a rationalisation move to streamline regulatory oversight without incurring higher charges on air passengers. Transport minister Loke Siew Fook said all 57 Mavcom staff would be offered positions in CAAM, based on their experience and qualifications. 'We assure all stakeholders that this transition will be carried out in an orderly and smooth manner. Every staff member will be informed of their new role in due course,' he told a press conference at his ministry here. Loke said the merger would position CAAM as the sole regulatory authority for the aviation industry in Malaysia, covering technical, safety, and economic aspects. He added that this would not involve additional costs to passengers. Instead, he said the rationalisation would result in significant cost savings, which would be redirected to attract and retain qualified technical personnel, especially in critical areas like air traffic control and aviation safety. He said most of this revenue would come from the air navigation charges imposed on airlines using Malaysian airspace, especially foreign carriers, since January this year. 'It will save the government RM150 million to RM200 million annually,' he said, adding that CAAM currently had a total of 1,430 employees. He also said that the government's decision to grant CAAM the status of a statutory body with separate emoluments would make the regulator financially independent. 'This is not just a merger. It's a fundamental step towards strengthening CAAM's position as a more competitive, resilient, and progressive regulator in line with international best practices.' Loke said CAAM's estimated revenue for 2025 was RM420 million, an increase from RM100 million to 110 million per annum previously. 'As of May this year alone, CAAM collected RM150 million, which is more than its total revenue for all of last year,' he added. Loke said these reforms were necessary following Malaysia's downgrade from Category 1 to Category 2 by the US Federal Aviation Administration, partly due to CAAM's inability to offer market-competitive salaries to technical staff. 'With this new financial model, we can offer better packages and retain top talent.' On Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd's concerns that cable theft could disrupt the timeline for the East Coast Rail Link project, Loke said he had contacted the home ministry and police. He asked the police to take stern action against those involved, also taking into consideration public safety and national security. 'The theft of cables is not only happening here. KTM has also experienced delays because of cable theft,' he said.
