Any Iranian closure of Hormuz Strait would be 'extremely dangerous', EU's top diplomat says
BRUSSELS, June 23 (Reuters) - An Iranian closure of the Strait of Hormuz would be dangerous and "not good for anybody", the European Union's top diplomat said on Monday.
"The concerns of retaliation and this war escalating are huge, especially closing of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran is something that would be extremely dangerous and not good for anybody," Kaja Kallas told reporters ahead of a meeting with EU foreign ministers.
Iran's Press TV reported on Sunday that Iran's Supreme National Security Council needed to make a final decision on whether to close the strait, after parliament was reported to back the measure. About 20% of global oil and gas demand flows through the channel.

There are other meetings scheduled for Zelenskyy at the summit, but the doors remain shut to the leaders' working meeting Wednesday, even as Rutte acknowledged how heavily the war weighs on the leaders. 'Of course, the most significant and direct threat facing this alliance remains the Russian Federation," he said. "Moscow continues to wage war against Ukraine with the support of North Korea, Iran and China, as well as Belarus.' Rutte stressed that the alliance is underwriting Ukraine's defense to the tune of billions of euros. European allies and Canada, 'will provide over €35 billion of additional security assistance to Ukraine for the year ahead,' he said. 'So in a couple of months, we went from €20 billion to €35 billion. And I think that is great news.' Meanwhile, Moscow bombarded Ukraine with 352 drones and decoys, as well as 11 ballistic missiles and five cruise missiles overnight Monday, Ukraine's air force said, killing at least 14 people and injuring several dozen others.

PARIS, June 23 (Reuters) - France's foreign minister on Monday accused Israel of putting two of its citizens in danger after an air strike hit Tehran's Evin prison and he said all strikes had to stop immediately to open the door to renewed diplomacy. Israel struck Tehran's most notorious jail for political prisoners, but also where a number of foreign nationals are held, in a potent demonstration that it was expanding its targets beyond military and nuclear sites to aim squarely at the pillars of Iran's ruling system. "The strike targeting Evin prison in Tehran, put our citizens Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris, who have been held for three years, in danger. It is unacceptable," Jean-Noel Barrot said on social media X. France in May filed a case at the World Court against Iran for violating the right to consular protection a bid to pressure Iran over the detention of its two citizens. Barrot, who asked that French diplomatic staff be given access to them as quickly as possible, said they had not been impacted by the damage on site. "All strikes must stop now to open the way for negotiations and diplomacy," Barrot said.
