MUMBAI: In a massive crackdown against auto and taxi drivers violating traffic rules, mainly
refusal to ply
, traffic police issued over 48,000 e-challans over a fortnight.
A special campaign was carried out between April 18 and May 4 under the supervision of Joint Commissioner of Traffic, Anil Kumbhare.

Police said 28,814 challans were issued for refusal to ply, 1,164 challans for not wearing uniforms, 6,268 challans for carrying more passengers than permitted, and 12,171 challans for other violations.
"We collected Rs 40.25 lakh in fines," a police officer said.
The process of suspension of licences for 28,814 auto and taxi drivers for refusal to ply is ongoing at Regional Transport Offices (RTO).

Hyderabad: BRS leaders on Sunday alleged a staggering Rs 1,100 crore scam within the paddy tenders, claiming that the state government, which should have received Rs 7,500 crore, secured less than half, with the remaining funds reportedly going illegally to bidders. This, they asserted, occurred because while the price was fixed at Rs 2,007 per quintal, millers were compelled to pay Rs 2,230. Addressing a press conference, BRS leader Peddi Sudarshan Reddy stated that despite alerting authorities and raising the issue in the Assembly through party MLAs, no action has been taken by the government. Sudarshan Reddy expressed suspicion over the participation of only four bidders in the tenders. He alleged that, so far, money has been collected from millers without the paddy being lifted, with cash transferred from millers to the bidders' accounts. 'We have collected 270 bank account details and sent them to the Chief Minister, Civil Supplies Minister, Civil Supplies Commissioner, the vigilance commission, and the ACB, but no action was taken. A total of Rs 7,500 crore should have reached the government treasury through these tenders. Not even half of it came. Instead of Rs 2,007 per quintal, Rs 2,230 was collected,' said Sudarshan Reddy. The BRS leader further pointed out that the High Court issued notices to the Chief Minister and the state minister, yet the government sought adjournments 16 times to file its counter. 'If you did not commit corruption, why are you seeking adjournments in the Court? Even though you filed illegal cases and summoned KCR, KTR, and Harish Rao in the name of investigation, why are Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy avoiding the court?' questioned Reddy. He further alleged that the deadline for the bidders was extended five times beyond the period specified in the tenders. Alleging that the bidders channelled Rs 1,100 crore to the Congress party, Sudarshan Reddy stated, 'We have given all the evidence to the court. Every Congress MLA got Rs 10 crore, and the civil supplies tender scam money has gone to Delhi. The MLAs were given money to ensure they do not go into despair.' He further alleged that Congress party representatives in Delhi were also involved in the civil supplies scam. He claimed that no grain was lifted anywhere except for the collection of money, and that Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy has remained silent on this scam so far. The authorities, he added, claimed that grain was being sent to the Philippines and were attempting to prematurely conclude the tender process. Demanding that Rs 1,100 crore be deposited into the Civil Supplies account, he announced that the party would lay siege to the Civil Supplies Bhavan and also approach the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding this alleged scam. Party leaders Errolla Srinivas, Bommera Ramamurthy, Sushila Reddy, K Kishore Goud, Y Satish Reddy, and Abhilash Rangineni were also present.

HR&CE refutes woman's claim of unpaid temple salary; says she worked voluntarily outside premises
COIMBATORE: The HR&CE department has refuted the claims of a woman that she had not been paid salary for several years despite being engaged as a sanitary worker. After a probe, officials averred that no such worker was officially appointed for sanitary work. The woman who levelled the allegations was not appointed by the department, and she has been doing the work voluntarily, they added. Reports that spread on social media states, a woman named Maragatham, aged around 70, from Poondi area was working as a sanitary worker at the vehicle parking lot of the Poondi temple for more than 20 years. She had demanded the state government to offer at least basic pay. 'She was appointed as a sanitary worker on the Poondi temple premises in 2003, with a monthly salary of Rs 1,500. She was left without salary within six months due to confusion on salary disbursal between the Boluvampatti village panchayat and the HR&CE department. The woman is surviving with the money offered by the devotees visiting the temple,' states the message. HR&CE officials conducted an inquiry, and said the woman's claims were false. Executive Officer of Velliangiriandavar Temple, M Gopalakrishnan, said that usually they temporarily recruit 15 people to engage in cleaning work for four months, between February and May. Maragatham was recruited for sanitary work in 2018 and she was employed only for four months and later relieved from the work, he claimed. 'We have two staff and recruit 15 people every year during the season. Likewise, she was employed in 2018. However, she continued to engage in cleaning works outside the temple premises (in the parking area which falls under the forest department's boundary). We told her not to engage in the work. However, she continues to do it and collect money from the vehicle owners. She has accused the temple management of not paying salary for over 20 years. We have communicated the clarification to our higher officials,' Gopalakrishnan said.

Centre introduces annual toll pass for private vehicles in big relief for Tamil Nadu commuters
CHENNAI: The decision of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to introduce an annual toll pass (ATP) priced at Rs 3,000 — allowing up to 200 single trips for private vehicles such as cars, vans, and jeeps through national and express highway toll plazas — is expected to bring huge relief to commuters. With several major projects, including the Chennai-Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway, expected to be operational by February-March 2026, private vehicle owners are likely to see a substantial reduction in toll expenses. The average toll fee per trip is Rs 15 when motorists use ATP. Currently, motorists travelling 343km from Chennai to Bengaluru on the NH pay Rs 430 across six toll plazas, from Sriperumbudur to Attibele. Using the ATP, the average toll cost will drop to around Rs 90. Similarly, for the 332-km stretch between Chennai and Tiruchy, toll charges for non-transport vehicles will reduce from Rs 495 to Rs 105. The ATP will be available exclusively through the RajmargYatra mobile app or the NHAI portal and will come into effect from August 15. The move is also expected to ease congestion on the Madurai-Tiruchy NH via Chittampatti, as a section of motorists may opt for the Madurai-Thuvarankurichi route instead. This alternative stretch currently sees limited traffic due to the high toll fee of Rs 190 per car at the Parali Pudur toll plaza — the highest in the state. The highway connects Madurai with Dindigul and Tiruchy. According to NHAI sources, non-transport vehicle owners can purchase the ATP multiple times a year without any cap. For example, if a vehicle owner uses up all 200 trips within three months, they can renew the ATP by paying another Rs 3,000 through the RajmargYatra mobile app.
