IJM continues to target more job wins for FY26

The Star03-06-2025

PETALING JAYA: IJM Corp Bhd is aiming for a higher project replenishment target for its financial year 2026 (FY26) despite missing its target again in its FY25 ended March 31, analysts say.
UOB Kay Hian Research (UOBKH Research) said that the construction and property group guided for a higher replenishment range of between RM6bil and 7bil in FY26 after the release of its FY25 results, which beat expectations.
A decent chunk of the replenishments will be from the delayed New Pantai Expressway (NPE) extension worth RM1.4bil and government housing project in Nusantara, Indonesia, estimated at RM1bil.
Other key replenishment opportunities include the Penang LRT, the Penang Airport and road projects in Sabah and Sarawak.
For FY25, IJM reported a core net profit of RM526.9mil, up 55.5% year-on-year following recognition of major construction milestones that saw its construction-segment earnings picking up significantly during 4Q25.
Otherwise, UOBHK Research said that property sales had softened due to delayed launches, while infrastructure earnings declined due to lower throughput for tolls and ports.
The construction segment's order book came in at RM11.1bil, comprising RM6.6bil from local jobs and RM4.5bil from foreign jobs in Singapore and Britain.
Total job replenishments for the division stood at RM2.7bil.
Meanwhile, Hong Leong Investment Bank Research (HLIB Research) said the recent approval for the long-awaited RM1.4bil NPE extension project will lift the group's order book.
'With this win, IJM has hit 40% of our FY26 contract-win assumption and we anticipate more wins this year mainly from data centres and the Nusantara project in Indonesia.
'On the balance-sheet front, IJM's low net gearing of 0.28 times provides ample space to fund the projects,' HLIB Research said.
According to the research house, the NPE extension project will be fully funded by the company with no financial commitment from the government.
The 15km extension will be fully elevated, linking three major highways – IJM's existing NPE and Besraya highways – with the upcoming LIKE Expressway. Construction will begin in the third quarter of this year with completion slated in 2029.
Once operational, the NPE extension is poised to add to IJM's recurring income stream, said HLIB Research.
As for the group's property division, UOBKH Research said total property sales came in at RM1.5bil in FY25 as delayed launches back in 3Q25 resulted in sales coming in at the lower end of IJM's target.
Unbilled sales stood at RM1.54bil and going forward, IJM is targeting RM2bil in sales in FY26 in line with its previous guidance prior to the delays.
As for the group's British ventures, contributions from its newly acquired JRL Group Holdings Ltd could begin as early as FY26.
'The current construction churn rate for the JRL Group is around £400mil with net margins of between 2% and 3%.
'While JRL is currently loss-making, this is largely due to balance-sheet issues causing project delays, which should be solved via a capital injection,' UOBKH Research said.
The research house has a 'buy' rating on the stock with a higher target price of RM3.15 from RM3 before.

Scientex's property arm offsets packaging woes

UOBKH Research said the group's outlook appears mixed. PETALING JAYA: Scientex Bhd 's financial performance is likely to be propped up by its property development arm, driven by demand for affordable housing. This comes as its plastic packaging division continues to struggle with external challenges, particularly stiff competition from Chinese manufacturers and foreign-exchange (forex) losses. The company's third-quarter results for the period ended April 30, 2025 (3Q5), released on Wednesday, showed continued weakness in its packaging arm. UOB Kay Hian (UOBKH) Research noted that fierce competition from China and unfavourable forex movements resulted in margin compression. The research house, which maintained its 'buy' call on the stock with a higher target price of RM4.10 (up from RM4.05), said the group's outlook appears mixed. While property earnings remain robust, amid recent landbank acquisitions signalling upcoming launches, the plastic packaging business faces structural headwinds from Chinese supply. 'As a result, we believe the property segment will remain the main growth driver for Scientex in the near term, pending potential consolidation in the packaging industry,' it said. The research house added that forecasts for the financial year ending July 31, 2025 (FY25), to FY27 have been revised downward to account for lower margins in the packaging arm. RHB Research shared that Scientex's management believes the plastic packaging market will remain challenging in the near term, especially in the industrial sub-segment. However, a rebound is anticipated in 2026, supported by returning demand for the consumer sub-segment, which makes up 45% to 50% of total packaging revenue. 'On the property business, we are optimistic that Scientex is on track to achieve its property launch target of more than RM2bil for FY25. 'Hence, we continue to expect the property segment to be the main earnings contributor in the coming quarters,' the research house said. RHB Research remains 'neutral' on Scientex, lowering its target price to RM3.50 from RM3.70 and cutting earnings assumptions for FY25 to FY27. Meanwhile, TA Research noted that Scientex's management expects sustainable packaging demand to remain strong despite the subdued outlook. 'On a positive note, we expect average selling prices and volumes for consumer packaging to remain stable, supported by a wider range of product offerings and designs for customers,' it said. The research house maintained its 'buy' call but trimmed its target price to RM4.85 from RM5.54 and cut earnings forecasts for FY25 to FY27, It said Scientex plans to launch 8,000 affordable housing units in FY25, up from 6,336 in FY24. Kenanga Research kept its 'market outperform' call and target price at RM3.60, noting downside risks have largely been priced in. However, it flagged the need to monitor resin prices, a key plastic packaging raw material, due to recent surge in crude oil prices.

Solarvest's Brunei project could generate RM100mil via JV, says HLIB

KUALA LUMPUR: The solar project secured by Solarvest Holdings Bhd in Brunei is expected to deliver up to RM100 million in value to its 49 per cent-owned joint venture, according to Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB Research). Solarvest secured a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) through its 34 per cent-owned joint venture (JV), Seri Suria Power (B) Sdn Bhd. The agreement, inked with Brunei's Department of Electrical Services, will see the JV build, own and operate a 30 MWac ground-mounted photovoltaic (PV) plant atop a remediated landfill in Kampong Belimbing, Kota Batu. Commercial operations are expected to begin by the end of the calendar year 2026, with construction scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2025. Seri Suria Power is a partnership between Solarvest and local entities Khazanah Satu Sdn Bhd — a Bruneian government investment arm under the Finance Ministry — and Serikandi Oilfield Services Sdn Bhd, an energy and infrastructure service provider. HLIB Research said in a note the engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning (EPCC) scope is expected to deliver between RM80 million and RM100 million in value to Solarvest's 49 per cent-owned EPCC JV, expanding its existing RM1.2 billion order book. "Capital expenditure for the plant is projected at B$35 million (about RM116 million) and should have minimal balance sheet impact considering equity funding required from Solarvest amounts between RM7 million and RM10 million. "Meanwhile, our preliminary project internal rate of return estimation could come in the 'high single digit' range – a reasonable figure, in our view," the firm said. HLIB Research added Solarvest's management aims to grow its order book beyond RM2 billion in the financial year ending March 2026 (FY26), supported by domestic clean energy initiatives such as LSS5, MyBeST, LSS6 and the CRESS programme. The group's tender pipeline remains robust at 5.86 gigawatt-peak (GWp), with battery energy storage systems (BESS) also emerging as a key growth area. HLIB Research maintains a "Buy" rating on Solarvest with an unchanged target price of RM2.25, based on a sum-of-parts valuation comprising a 25 times price-to-earnings multiple for its EPCC business and discounted cash flow for its recurring income assets. Key risks to the outlook include execution delays, political uncertainties and potential fluctuations in material and labour costs.

Expansion, new orders to lift VSI's earnings despite trade uncertainty

CIMB Research cut its earnings per share forecasts by between 10% and 20% for FY25 to FY27. PETALING JAYA: Analysts remain divided on the outlook for electrical and electronics manufacturing company VS Industry Bhd (VSI) following the release of its results for the third quarter of its financial year ending July 31 (3Q25), which came in below expectations. VSI posted net profit of RM23.77mil and revenue of RM909.41mil for the quarter. This was down from RM54.42mil and RM1.01bil in the same quarter a year ago. The results came in below CIMB Research's expectations, accounting for 49% of its full-year estimate and 52% of consensus. The year-to-date earnings declined 42% year-on-year and was said to be mainly due to weaker demand, higher labour costs in Malaysia, and start-up expenses from its new operations in the Philippines. Given the ongoing demand uncertainty amid subdued consumer sentiment and possible tariffs, CIMB Research cut its earnings per share forecasts by between 10% and 20% for FY25 to FY27. 'Near-term order flows from Malaysia and Singapore will remain dependent on evolving consumer sentiment and clarity on US tariffs following the end of the 90-day grace period in early July,' CIMB Research said. Following its earnings revision, CIMB Research maintained a 'hold' call on VSI with a lower target price of 79 sen, adding that the discount appropriately captures the heightened earnings risks. Hong Leong Investment Bank Research (HLIB Research) also flagged concerns about the group's earnings visibility. HLIB Research reported that VSI's core profit after tax and minority interest of RM69.6mil for the nine months of its current financial year (9M25) was 26.3% lower, meeting only half of its full-year forecast. 'While we anticipate some frontloading activity from US-exposed customers in 4Q25, we see downside risk to management's FY26 guidance given potential inventory adjustments and an uncertain order environment after frontloading,' HLIB Research said. Despite this, the research house pointed to a potential earnings boost from the ramp-up of the group's Philippines operations and a newly secured contract from a big customer. HLIB Research maintained its 'hold' rating on VSI with a lower target price of 72 sen, from 86 sen.
