CAIRO: The State of Qatar has participated in the joint Arab meeting on the assessment of legal frameworks and strategies related to the protection and promotion of the rights and needs of victims of terrorism. The meeting, which began on Monday at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Arab League, will continue over the course of three days.
Special Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs HE Ambassador Faisal bin Abdullah Al Hanzab chaired the Qatari delegation to the meeting.
In his address during the meeting, Ambassador Al Hanzab expressed the State of Qatar's strongest condemnation of the organized terrorist escalation carried out by the Israeli occupation, which has resulted in thousands of Palestinian casualties since the onset of its aggression on the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023, including killings, displacement, the burning of homes, and destruction of property.
He emphasized that the rights of the victims of Israeli terrorism can only be realized through the recognition of the State of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on the June 4, 1967 borders, and by calling on the international community to halt the Israeli terrorist aggression and ensure justice for the victims from the brotherly Palestinian people.
He stated that the meeting featuring high-level participation from member state representatives, officials from joint Arab action bodies and specialized anti-terrorism mechanisms, along with regional and international partners, represents a valuable opportunity to shed light on the suffering of victims of terrorist acts. It is also a timely moment to acknowledge their rights, compensate them for the psychological, social, health, and material damage they have endured, and coordinate the support provided to them and their families to alleviate their suffering.
He further expressed the State of Qatar's full solidarity with victims and their families, in the interest of building more peaceful, just, and equitable societies.
The Special Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairsآnoted that, as part of Qatar's commitment to the security of member states and its belief in the necessity of stability for Arab peoples, the country affirms its full adherence to Arab plans, strategies, and agreements on combating terrorism and addressing the concerns of its victims. He added that the State of Qatar is part of the Arab consensus condemning terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, and rejects any attempt to associate it with the religion of Islam, which calls for the promotion of love, tolerance, and the rejection of violence, while distinguishing clearly between terrorism and legitimate resistance and the right of oppressed peoples to struggle against injustice.
He added that the State of Qatar adopts a policy of moderation and cultural and religious tolerance with all, sparing no effort in promoting a culture of peace, coexistence, and acceptance of others among all peoples. It condemns all forms and types of extremism, violence, and terrorism, and believes in the need to address their root causes.
Ambassador Al Hanzab noted that the State of Qatar has been keen to establish plans and policies aimed at building bridges of dialogue among cultures and religions, and at supporting international peace and security. In this regard, the country has enacted legislation to ensure the rights of foreign workers and allow them to freely practice their religious rituals, thereby fostering trust and harmony between citizens and residents.
He also said that thanks to the wise leadership's guidance, the State of Qatar has become a global role model in promoting tolerance and peaceful coexistence, as people of diverse cultures and backgrounds live and work together in the country in a spirit of solidarity and understanding, adding that Qatar adopts initiatives that enhance interfaith and intercultural dialogue, out of the conviction that true peace can only be achieved through respect for cultural and religious diversity.
The Special Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs said that as an active, responsible, and committed member of the international community, and within the framework of its obligations under the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, the State of Qatar pursues policies that enhance the resilience of victims of terrorism and their families by voluntarily providing them with appropriate support and assistance, including financial, legal, medical, and psychological aid.
He continued, saying that for this reason, the State of Qatar has directed part of its humanitarian aid to areas affected by terrorism and has been a key supporter of the United Nations Investigative Team's work in promoting accountability for crimes committed by certain terrorist groups. Moreover, Qatar is one of the strongest backers of UN General Assembly resolutions on victims of terrorism and was among the founding members of the Group of Friends of Victims of Terrorism. Qatar also enjoys a strong partnership with the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, with a growing focus on addressing the needs of victims of terrorism.
He emphasized that Qatar places high hopes on the outcomes of this meeting, expecting recommendations that address the harms suffered by victims of terrorism and prevent violations of their humanity and dignity. He added that victims represent the human dimension of the impact of terrorism and play a vital role in countering terrorism and violent extremism by making their voices heard and exposing the falsehoods of terrorist rhetoric and agendas. He stressed that it is therefore a moral duty for all to support victims of terrorism and ensure they are treated with empathy and dignity.
In conclusion, the Special Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairsexpressed support for the outcomes of the meeting and reiterated the country's unwavering commitment to enhancing regional and international cooperation to prevent and combat terrorism, support victims and survivors, and promote and protect their full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Iran detains 22 people suspected of links to Israeli intelligence

TehrancTypeface:> Iran has detained 22 people on suspicion of links to Israeli intelligence services. The suspects were held in the province of Qom, the pro-government ISNA news agency reported, citing local intelligence police. The detainees are suspected of having been in contact with the espionage services of the 'Zionist regime,' according to the news agency. They are also accused of 'unsettling public opinion' and 'supporting the criminal regime' of Israel. Details of the specific charges or the identities of those arrested have not been released. Iranian authorities have initiated a wave of arrests in the midst of the war with Israel, with media reporting dozens of people having been taken into custody across the country in recent days. Strikes between Israel and Iran are continuing for a second week, with a round of diplomatic talks between European foreign ministers and their Iranian counterpart on Friday having failed to produce results towards an end to the attacks. Israel says it launched its attack on June 13 because Iran was on the cusp of producing a nuclear weapon - something Tehran has consistently denied, saying its nuclear programme is for civilian use only.
