Dr M to launch big umbrella to 'save Malays'
Summary
Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad is forming a Malay secretariat committee as a "big umbrella" to "save the Malays" by addressing issues affecting the community.
The committee aims to return Malay-led government by focusing on Malay issues.
PN is involved, but he claims it is non-partisan and that Umno is also free to join.
In yet another bid to 'save the Malays' through returning political dominance, former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday announced the formation of a Malay secretariat committee as a 'big umbrella' for the community.
This follows a meeting with several political leaders - including from Perikatan Nasional - to discuss the secretariat.
Among those present were PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin, Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin, and PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.
Mahathir said the committee would serve as a platform to address issues affecting the Malay community that the current government had failed to resolve.
'We have agreed to focus on Malay issues—not party matters, but issues that concern all Malays.
'They (Malays) need fighters to champion their cause. Right now, they don't have a dedicated fighter. We're not concerned with other problems, we just want to focus on one struggle—the struggle to save the Malays,' he said during a press conference at the Perdana Leadership Foundation in Putrajaya.
'We know there are many problems faced by the Malays, and they can only be resolved if the government is once again led by Malays. That is why our struggle is to find a way to return to power, so we can address the problems faced by the Malays.
'We have agreed to form an informal movement, which we are calling the 'big umbrella', so that all Malays can be part of one group,' said the soon-to-be centenarian.
When asked whether the movement would involve Umno, the main Malay-based party, Mahathir, who since his exit had led two splinter parties - Bersatu and Pejuang - said he was open to Umno members joining the struggle.
'Even if they are Umno members, if they agree with our cause, we will accept them,' he said.

How is PAS's credibility faring vs UMNO's struggling defense of Malay values?
ZAID Ibrahim's recent endorsement of PAS' potential to uplift Malaysia has bolstered the party's image as a credible Islamic force. The former minister praised PAS's 'moral clarity', stating, 'History has shown us that clerical leadership can steer nations through immense adversity.' Just look at Iran. Guided by its Council of Guardians, religious scholars with deep ideological conviction, Iran not only survived but asserted its independence despite decades of war and crippling sanctions from global superpowers,' he said last week in a Facebook post. This comparison to Iran's resilient leadership underscores PAS's ideological strength, which Zaid believes can elevate Malaysia if paired with good governance and inclusivity. PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan welcomed this, emphasizing the party's commitment to morality and ethics, citing Western thinkers like Plato and Kant, and the UK's Seven Nolan Principles. He asserted, 'This also justifies PAS' firm stance on the matter, which Zaid has acknowledged, particularly in terms of the party's leadership being free from corruption and corrupt practices.' With 43 Dewan Rakyat seats and control over four states, PAS's growing influence contrasts sharply with UMNO's struggles. Since losing power in 2018, UMNO has faced challenges in defending Malay race and religion. UMNO secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki claimed, 'UMNO was born from the womb of a struggle rooted in safeguarding the sanctity of Islam, strengthening the dignity of the Malay race, and preserving the sovereignty of the homeland.' Yet, he admitted the 22-month period post-2018 saw Islam 'belittled' and Malay agendas, like MARA's focus, undermined by policies favouring equality over Malay privileges. UMNO's narrative of betrayal, exemplified by Asyraf's reference to ICERD and Statut Rom, paints rivals as opportunists who are 'selling our religion.' However, UMNO's own credibility has been tarnished by corruption scandals pre-2018, weakening its moral authority compared to PAS's cleaner image. While UMNO touts victories like the 2019 Cameron Highlands by-election, its broader appeal remains hampered by internal divisions and public distrust. PAS's emphasis on ethical governance aligns with public demand for integrity, positioning it as a formidable alternative. UMNO, despite its historical dominance, struggles to reclaim its role as the champion of Malay-Muslim interests, as its past governance failures overshadow its rhetoric. —June 22, 2025 Main image: Malay Mail

UMNO to review motion on Hishammuddin's suspension revocation
BATU PAHAT: UMNO will consider a motion to revoke the suspension of former UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein's membership. UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said it was the party leadership's tradition and practice to examine any motion submitted by UMNO divisions during their respective delegates' meetings. 'This is a motion brought by one of the 191 UMNO divisions nationwide. 'Like other divisions, the motion will be submitted to the UMNO headquarters to be studied and considered before any decision is made,' he told reporters after officiating the Batu Pahat UMNO Division Delegates' Meeting at Dewan Jubli Intan Sultan Ibrahim here today. Khaled, who is also Defence Minister, said UMNO had yet to receive an appeal from the former senior national leader, but stressed that the motion would still be reviewed and considered. 'For now, there is only a motion, and we will consider it. Whether the individual concerned (Hishammuddin) has submitted an appeal or not, I don't wish to comment further,' he said. Yesterday, the Sembrong UMNO Division passed a motion for the immediate and unconditional revocation of Hishammuddin's suspension. Sembrong UMNO Division chief Datuk Abdul Ghani Abdul Rashid said this was the second year in a row the motion had been proposed by the division, reflecting the majority of delegates' wishes to see Hishammuddin return to active party involvement. For the record, Hishammuddin was suspended from UMNO membership for six years, effective January 27, 2023. Meanwhile, UMNO secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party was open to receiving and discussing the motion at the next UMNO Supreme Council meeting. 'UMNO is an open party, and we've received many appeals from party leaders that have been accepted by UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. In this matter, I will receive and consider any motions submitted,' he told reporters after officiating the Rompin UMNO Delegates' Meeting in Muadzam Shah, Pahang today. Asked about several MCA divisions that had submitted motions calling for the dissolution of Barisan Nasional (BN) during the party's annual general meeting, Asyraf urged component parties to remain patient and to make decisions that were more realistic and practical. 'All the component parties have incumbent seats, and we must ensure that we retain the 30 seats we already hold... If we aim to win more, we must negotiate with the top leadership to discuss this. UMNO is very open to discussions on the matter,' he added. Yesterday, the media reported that MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said the party's top leadership would take into account grassroots feedback before deciding on the party's future direction. Commenting on the same issue in KUALA KANGSAR, UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said the matter must be brought to the UMNO Supreme Council (MKT) meeting for discussion with other council members before any decision is made. 'Let the proposal go to the Supreme Council meeting, I will give my comment then,' he said when met at the Dialog@KPK programme with the Minister of Plantation and Commodities at the Indian Association Hall here today.
