Gunfire erupts during Mpumalanga liquor store robbery: 2 arrested, cop wounded

The Citizen4 days ago

Two suspects, aged 37 and 40, were arrested during an armed robbery that escalated into a shoot-out with the police in Leandra in Mpumalanga.
Ridge Times reports that the shoot-out, which happened on Tuesday, saw a 38-year-old police constable wounded in the crossfire.
According to Mpumalanga Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, police officers from Leandra were conducting routine patrols in the area when they encountered a robbery in progress. The suspects allegedly opened fire on the officers, who retaliated. It was during this exchange that the constable was shot in the hip. He was transported to hospital for medical treatment.
Preliminary investigations suggest that a gang of about seven armed men, wearing police reflector vests, entered a liquor outlet in Leandra. They allegedly identified themselves as police officials on duty, investigating counterfeit liquor. The suspects reportedly questioned the owner and spent nearly an hour at the premises before trying to carry out an armed robbery.
At that point, members of the Leadra Visible Policing unit arrived on the scene, prompting the shoot-out.
Some of the suspects managed to evade arrest during the gunfire and fled, abandoning a white BMW 3 Series, with a false registration number, and a white Ford Focus that had reportedly been stolen in Bronkhorstspruit in March. Both vehicles were seized and taken to the police station for further investigation.
Believing that not all suspects had fled, police conducted a search of the area, which led to the arrest of two suspects who were found hiding in an enclosed storeroom. They were charged with attempted murder, armed robbery and possession of suspected stolen vehicles.
Crime scene experts are continuing to process the area, and further developments are expected as the investigation unfolds.
The arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Leslie Periodical Court tomorrow.
The remaining suspects are still at large.
Acting provincial commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, welcomed the arrests and condemned the attack on law enforcement.
'Attacking police officers will be dealt with accordingly. We will not rest until the remaining suspects are brought to justice,' he said.
Police are appealing to the public who may have information that could assist in their arrest to contact Detective Constable Thembayona Mkhulisi on 066 577 6013 or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Alternatively, tip-offs can be sent via the MySAPS App. All information received will be treated confidentially, and callers may remain anonymous.

French police probe fake Disneyland 'marriage' with nine-year-old

Two people were held for questioning in the case, which initially caused alarm when staff alerted police on Saturday that it could have concerned an illegal child marriage. Image: Disneyland/Facebook French police were on Sunday probing the circumstances of a bizarre stunt at Disneyland outside of Paris, with a group of adults suspected of hiring the theme park and paying hundreds of extras to stage a fake marriage for a nine-year-old Ukrainian girl. Two people were held for questioning in the case, which initially caused alarm when staff alerted police on Saturday that it could have concerned an illegal child marriage. But investigators now believe that the so-called "marriage" was staged, with the girl's mother reportedly saying that she wanted her to feel like a Disney "princess" for the day. "The event turned out to be a staged event, with the guests themselves extras" invited to be part of the stunt, deputy prosecutor Alexandre Verney said. "So it wasn't a wedding, but a staged wedding filmed with around a hundred extras. They hired Disneyland Paris, pretending it was a real wedding," he told AFP. Four people were arrested and taken into custody, and the questioning of two of them -- suspected of fraud and money laundering -- was extended on Saturday evening. They are the so-called "groom" who is believed to be behind the event, 22 years old and "presumed to be British", and a Latvian woman, 24, said a source close to the case. Video Player is loading. The investigations, including a medical examination of the nine-year-old girl, a Ukrainian national, found that "she had not been subjected to any violence or coercive acts," the prosecutor's office said. According to the Le Parisien daily, which first reported the incident, a man had several weeks previously hired the Disneyland Paris complex for a sum of 130,000 euros ($150,000) for several hours before it opened to the public. Staff were astonished when the nine-year-old appeared wearing high heels on Saturday morning, barely able to stand in the elaborate footwear, and they alerted the authorities, it said. The paper said the man who organised the event had submitted false documents concerning his identity and Disneyland filed a complaint. Hundreds of extras were bussed in to play the part of the guests, it said, while the girl's mother told investigators she wanted to organise a "day worthy of a princess" for her daughter. AFP

Suspect arrested for truck hijacking and tyre theft

Police in Mpumalanga have arrested a 41-year-old man in connection with a truck hijacking incident that took place in Bushbuckridge on 20 June. The incident led to the theft of 36 tyres and has raised concerns about the impact of such crimes on the local economy. The drama unfolded when the driver of a delivery truck, en route to Bushbuckridge Tyre Mart, was held at gunpoint shortly after completing a delivery. The hijacker approached the car near the R40 road and forced the driver to continue driving under threat. The suspect then directed the driver to a scrapyard and another site, where 36 tyres were offloaded from the truck. The driver reported the crime at a nearby police station soon after he was released. According to police, the stolen delivery included tyres valued at R67 140, while the delivery vehicle itself is estimated to be worth around R500 000. Later that day, at around 16:00, Netstar Tracking Company alerted the police to the possible location of the stolen goods. Officers from the Acornhoek Cluster Crime Prevention Team followed the lead to a residence in Maribishing. There, they discovered a pile of tyres stacked near a garage. The man at the scene claimed he owned the tyres and said they were delivered to him by unknown individuals. He was arrested immediately on suspicion of possessing stolen property. Police have since linked him directly to the truck hijacking. The Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, praised the officers' rapid response to the truck hijacking. 'This type of criminal activity is harmful to our economy,' he warned. 'If such crimes persist, businesses may be forced to shut down, resulting in job losses.' The suspect is expected to appear before the Bushbuckridge Magistrate's Court on Monday, 23 June. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
