Sharjah Welcomes High-Level Korean Delegation to Boost Cooperation in Artificial Intelligence and Digital Transformation
Sharjah, June 2025: The Emirate of Sharjah welcomed a high-level official delegation from the Seoul AI Foundation and the Seoul Metropolitan Government, in a strategic visit organised by Sharjah Digital Department (SDD). The visit aimed to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the UAE and South Korea in the realms of digital transformation and innovation.
The delegation's visit focused on exploring avenues for deepening collaboration between SDD and the Seoul AI Foundation, with a particular emphasis on future partnership opportunities in artificial intelligence and smart government services.
During the visit, His Excellency Sheikh Saud bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Director General of Sharjah Digital Department, welcomed the Korean delegation at a meeting held at the House of Wisdom. The meeting was attended by His Excellency Rashid Ali Al Ali, Director General of Sharjah Communications Technologies Authority, His Excellency Shin Donghyup, Consul of the Republic of Korea for Science and ICT in Dubai and Eng. Majid Almadhloum, Sharjah Digital Department Advisor.
The visiting delegation included Ok-hyun Kang, General Director of the Digital City Bureau at the Seoul Metropolitan Government; Jung Yoon Lee, External Relations Manager at the Digital Policy Division; Man Gi Kim, President of the Seoul AI Foundation (SAF); Seong Hwan Ju, Head of the AI Innovation & Business Division at SAF; and Boris J. Kim, Senior Manager of the Policy Cooperation Team at SAF.
During the meeting, both parties discussed opportunities for collaboration on joint AI-driven projects, exchanged expertise in smart city development, and explored standout initiatives and best practices from both parties in digital transformation and digital infrastructure.
His Excellency Sheikh Saud bin Sultan Al Qasimi underscored the significance of the visit as a key milestone in establishing strategic partnerships with one of the world's leading cities in digital transformation and artificial intelligence. He welcomed the opportunity to exchange insights, experiences, and expertise with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul AI Foundation, stating that such collaboration 'represents the most effective path toward achieving sustainable development that benefits our communities and aligns with our shared aspirations.' His Excellency expressed optimism that the visit would lay the groundwork for long-term collaboration between Sharjah and Seoul, opening the door to innovative projects and expanded opportunities in AI and smart city development.
For his part, Man Gi Kim highlighted Sharjah's importance as a strategic partner in advanced technology sectors, stating: 'We regard Sharjah as one of Seoul's key partner cities in the field of digital and AI-driven urban innovation, and that is why we have extended an official invitation to Sharjah Digital Department to participate in Smart Life Week 2025 in Seoul. We trust this occasion will further solidify and elevate the longstanding relationship between the Seoul AI Foundation and Sharjah Digital Department into a more strategic and action-oriented collaboration.'
Smart Life Week 2025 is recognised as one of Asia's premier innovation platforms and South Korea's leading technology events, underscoring the Korean delegation's acknowledgement of Sharjah's pioneering role in digital transformation.
Following the meeting, the organising team guided the delegation on a field tour of key urban development sites across the emirate, including University City and the Aljada project. The tour showcased Sharjah's advanced smart infrastructure and urban planning efforts, forming the backbone of its ongoing digital transformation journey.
The visit concluded at the Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park (SRTIP), where the delegation explored cutting-edge research initiatives and smart labs driving innovation and entrepreneurship, most notably the SOI Lab, which focuses on artificial intelligence applications.
This strategic visit reaffirms Sharjah's commitment to fostering global partnerships and elevating its international leadership in digital transformation, aligning with its vision to build a sustainable, innovative digital city.

Pope Leo calls for an ethical AI framework in a message to tech execs gathering at the Vatican
CNN — Pope Leo XIV says tech companies developing artificial intelligence should abide by an 'ethical criterion' that respects human dignity. AI must take 'into account the well-being of the human person not only materially, but also intellectually and spiritually,' the pope said in a message sent Friday to a gathering on AI attended by Vatican officials and Silicon Valley executives. 'No generation has ever had such quick access to the amount of information now available through AI,' he said. But 'access to data — however extensive — must not be confused with intelligence.' He also expressed concern about AI's impact on children's 'intellectual and neurological development,' writing that 'society's well-being depends upon their being given the ability to develop their God-given gifts and capabilities.' That statement from the Pope came on the second of a two-day meeting for tech leaders in Rome to discuss the societal and ethical implications of artificial intelligence. The second annual Rome Conference on AI was attended by representatives from AI leaders including Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, IBM, Meta and Palantir along with academics from Harvard and Stanford and representatives of the Holy See. The event comes at a somewhat fraught moment for AI, with the rapidly advancing technology promising to improve worker productivity, accelerate research and eradicate disease, but also threatening to take human jobs, produce misinformation, worsen the climate crisis and create even more powerful weapons and surveillance capabilities. Some tech leaders have pushed back against regulations intended to ensure that AI is used responsibly, which they say could hinder innovation and global competition. 'In some cases, AI has been used in positive and indeed noble ways to promote greater equality, but there is likewise the possibility of its misuse for selfish gain at the expense of others, or worse, to foment conflict and aggression,' Leo said in his Friday statement. Although it doesn't have any direct regulatory power, the Vatican has been increasingly vocal on AI policy, seeking to use its influence to push for ethical technological developments. In 2020, the Vatican hosted an event where tech leaders, EU regulators and the late Pope Francis discussed 'human-centric' AI, which resulted in the Rome Call for AI Ethics, a document outlining ethical considerations for the development of AI algorithms. IBM, Microsoft and Qualcomm were among the signatories who agreed to abide by the document's principles. Two years later, Francis called for an international treaty to regulate the use of AI and prevent a 'technological dictatorship' from emerging. In that statement — which came months after an AI-generated image of Francis in a puffy coat went viral — he raised concerns about AI weapons and surveillance systems, as well as election interference and growing inequality. In 2024, he became the first pope to participate in the G7 summit, laying out the ethical framework for the development of AI that he hoped to get big tech companies and governments on board with. The new pontiff chose to name himself after Pope Leo XIII who led the church during the industrial revolution and issued a landmark teaching document which supported workers' rights to a fair wage and to form trade unions. With the development of AI posing a similar revolution to the one during the 19th century, Leo has suggested that the church's social teaching — which offers a framework on engaging with politics and business — be used when it comes to new tech advancements. 'In our own day, the church offers to everyone the treasury of her social teaching in response to another industrial revolution and to developments in the field of artificial intelligence that pose new challenges for the defense of human dignity, justice and labor,' Leo said in that May address. The Friday event, which took place inside the Vatican's apostolic palace, included a roundtable discussion on AI ethics and governance. Among those present from the Vatican side were Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, who has engaged with business leaders on AI, and Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, who holds the position of 'sostituto' (substitute) in the Vatican, a papal chief of staff equivalent. Earlier this week, Leo referenced AI during a speech to Italian bishops, talking about 'challenges' that 'call into question' the respect for human dignity. 'Artificial intelligence, biotechnologies, data economy and social media are profoundly transforming our perception and our experience of life,' he told them. 'In this scenario, human dignity risks becoming diminished or forgotten, substituted by functions, automatism, simulations. But the person is not a system of algorithms: he or she is a creature, relationship, mystery.' A key issue at Friday's event is AI governance, or how the companies building it should manage their need to generate profit and responsibilities to shareholders with the imperative not to create harm in the world. That conversation is especially pressing at a moment when the United States is on the brink of kneecapping the enforcement of much of the limited regulations on AI that exist, with a provision in President Donald Trump's proposed agenda bill that would prohibit the enforcement of state laws on AI for 10 years. In his statement, Leo called on tech leaders to acknowledge and respect 'what is uniquely characteristic of the human person' as they seek to develop an ethical framework for AI development.

Deezer Adds AI Song Tags to Tackle Streaming Fraud
Yara Sameh Deezer announced Friday that it will begin labeling albums that include AI-generated tracks in combat against streaming fraud. The music streaming service reports that about 18% of the music uploaded each day — more than 20,000 tracks — is now fully AI-generated. While most of these tracks don't go viral, Deezer says around 70% of its streams are fake and designed to earn royalties fraudulently. To combat this, AI-generated tracks on Deezer are now clearly tagged and won't appear in editorial playlists or algorithm-based recommendations. Fraudulent streams are also being filtered out of royalty payments. The company says the new labels will be a game changer in helping listeners determine the difference between human-created music and AI content. Deezer notes that for now, AI-only songs make up just 0.5% of all streams on its platform, but that the trend is growing fast. 'We've detected a significant uptick in delivery of AI-generated music only in the past few months and we see no sign of it slowing down. It's an industry-wide issue, and we are committed to leading the way in increasing transparency by helping music fans identify which albums include AI music,' Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier said in a press release . 'AI is not inherently good or bad, but we believe a responsible and transparent approach is key to building trust with our users and the music industry,' he added. 'We are also clear in our commitment to safeguarding the rights of artists and songwriters at a time where copyright law is being put into question in favor of training AI models.' Deezer applied for two patents in December 2024 for its AI Detection technology, which it says is focused on two different ways of detecting 'unique signatures' that tell the difference between synthetic and authentic content. The move comes as Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Sony Music Entertainment are reportedly in talks to license their work to AI startups Udio and Suno, Bloomberg reported earlier this month. Her Excellency Sana Suhail, Minister of Family, honoured 50 graduates from disability care and rehabilitation centres for people of determination during an inspiring graduation ceremony held yesterday at the Cultural Centre in Ajman. For the first time, this event brought together students from the centres for people of determination across Dubai, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, and Dibba Fujairah, along with students from the 'Mashaghel Rehabilitation Centers ' vocational training programme, celebrating their perseverance and remarkable achievements. Through their academic and professional journeys, these individuals have become inspiring examples of willpower and dedication. In her speech during the ceremony, Her Excellency praised the graduates for their determination and commitment. She emphasised that this achievement stands as a testament to their unwavering will and the profound positive impact of these programmes, which aim to build a more inclusive and equitable society. The ceremony was a celebration and reinforcement of inclusion and empowerment. These centers are located in various emirates, including Dubai, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Dibba Al-Fujairah. They provide tailored education, training, and rehabilitation programmes for individuals aged 4 to 18. After completing these programmes, young people can transition into vocational roles, develop life skills, take on project-based work, or join the wider job market. One such initiative, the 'Mashaghel Rehabilitation Centers Programme' workshops, equips people of determination with entrepreneurship and home-based business skills, further expanding opportunities for independence and personal growth. About the Ministry of Family: On 8th December 2024, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, announced the establishment of the Ministry of Family in the United Arab Emirates.
