Pedersen wins Giro opener as Landa injured in crash

BBC News09-05-2025

Denmark's Mads Pedersen outsprinted Wout van Aert to win the first stage of the Giro d'Italia in Albania. Britain's Tom Pidcock finished fifth for his new Q36.5 team, in a race in which the 25-year-old hopes to contend for the coveted overall pink jersey and also win stages. But another contender for pink, Mikel Landa of Spain, crashed violently with about 5km to go, with the Soudal-Quick Step rider appearing to collide with a lamppost on the approach to the centre of Albania's capital city Tirana. He was placed in an ambulance at the scene and has subsequently abandoned the race.Lidl-Trek's Pedersen will wear pink in Saturday's second-stage time trial after benefiting from the pace set by his team-mates on the front of the peloton over the final Surrel climb, which saw the pure sprinters in the race dropped from the leading bunch."It's absolutely amazing, especially after the team work like this, it's really incredible that the team works that hard and I can pay them back with a win," he said.Pedersen is a highly decorated rider, having won the 2019 Road World Championship, one-day classics and now his seventh Grand Tour stage. The 29-year-old beat Visma-Lease A Bike's Van Aert to the line by a wheel - the Belgian is expected to be Pedersen's main rival for the ciclamino-coloured points jersey. An exhausted Van Aert said afterwards: "You only get one or two chances to take pink, but on that last climb I struggled to stay in."
Drama in the Giro already
It was a typically dramatic first stage for the Giro, on unknown roads in Albania, which is hosting the start of a Grand Tour for the first time.During the final two climbs many riders lost touch with the peloton, including sprinters Kaden Groves and Olav Kooij, because the pace was so high, even though the climbs themselves were not considered to be overly difficult. But the real surprises came in the battle for the general classification. Canada's Derek Gee was dropped from the peloton for Israel-Premier Tech, losing almost a minute, and Ineos Grenadiers' Thymen Arensman lost over a minute and a half. Then, the often luckless Spaniard Landa was left writhing in pain on the pavement, his bike lying at the bottom of a lamppost. The crash saw other riders come to grief as they took evasive action in the ensuing melee, including France's Geoffrey Bouchard of Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale. Saturday's time trial sees riders take a 13.7km test against the clock around the streets of Tirana, with Pedersen expected to relinquish the pink jersey to a specialist in the discipline.

Luke Humphries has say on ‘fartgate' in message to rival James Wade after Players Championship darts win

JAMES WADE has proved that flatulent glee gets you everywhere - after the jubilant 'Fartgate' flinger won the support of Luke Humphries. The Machine shrugged off controversy over his loud and less than proud intervention against Peter Wright by winning Players Championship 19. 2 Wade trumped Scott Williams in the final to move back up to World No. 8. The English oche ace was so overjoyed to be on-song after his pong that he posted a message on X. And he got a surprise reply from Cool Hand, offering him congratulations - albeit with a mischievous twist... Wade, 42, wrote: "Good Morning everyone. Wow!! I'm over the moon you can't believe. "I played well in all games this week and last night was the high I've been aiming for!! Celebrations all round. "As always, thank you to all my supporters and the kind comments. "Thank you to my sponsors and management team!" The 2024 Ally Pally king said: "Great farts mate!! I mean 'Darts'." However, fans managed to be even less subtle than Humphries with their rip-ostes. James Wade names two darts stars who should NOT have been invited into Premier League darts One wrote: "You have blown all your opponents away, the smell of success is strong when your on stage." Another mused: "Must be great to let off a bit if steam, although Peter Wright might not agree." The farting furore exploded live on TV during Players Championship 17 when Wade let rip during a 6-5 victory over Wright. Snakebite might be better suited to dealing with stings than stinks - but he initially laughed it off. Referee Owen Binks reminded them "this is a streamed match, guys". Wade then suggested his Scottish opponent 'Give it a second' before he returned to the oche. But Snakebite appeared to believe that time period was a clear under-estimate. Wade eventually went on to not just nick that match but get better as the week wore on - at darts, that is - peaking with the PC19 crown. Yet incredibly it's the second time the Surrey star has been caught in a storm of his own brewing. That blast from the past was at the Players Championship last September when he blamed the noise on velcro from his new trainers.

Shock Serie A side 'enter race for Antony' as Brazilian makes his preference clear while Man United look to cut their losses on £86m flop

Italian side Como have tried to sign Manchester United outcast Antony as the winger desperately tries to end his nightmare spell at Old Trafford. The 25-year-old has endured a miserable stint at United and has been unable to fulfill the £86million price tag the Red Devils paid Ajax for his services in 2022. He has only scored 12 goals and provided five assists in 96 games for the club and even revealed he considered retirement while in Manchester. Antony is contracted until 2027 but is set to be axed after unconvincing performances under both Ruben Amorim and Erik ten Hag. The Brazilian was sent on loan to Betis in January and went on to become one of their stars of the season, scoring 14 times in 26 games in just five months. He earned rave reviews from players and fans alike as he earned a recall to the Brazil national team. The Brazilian is set to be axed from United's squad after failing to impress boss Ruben Amorim Antony's performances at Betis even led club legend Joaquin to joke that he would kidnap the forward to keep him at the club. However, the winger's loan spell concluded at the end of last season and he is currently returning to United. But the Red Devils look set to cut their losses and have opened the door for Antony's permanent exit. Italian side Como have attempted to sign the Brazilian in recent days but he is holding out on completing a move to Real Betis, according to Fabrizio Romano. United are aware of Antony's preference but there has been no agreement between the clubs yet. Como are managed by former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas and count former Spurs star Dele Alli on their books. They finished in 10th place in Serie A last season, having been promoted the previous season. Antony would not be the first player to swap Carrington for Como, with Raphael Varane making the move last year, before injury forced him into an early retirement Former Chelsea and Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas manages Como, who finished tenth in Serie A Antony is unlikely to stay at United beyond the summer after admitting he 'hit rock' bottom at United. 'I started to doubt, even in myself,' he said. 'But, my family always told me to stay calm, because the process is painful and people must accept it. Today, I understand it better after everything I went through. I am grateful for that experience.' But even if he were to remain, he would reportedly be banned from the club's pre-season tour of the US.
