ACC endorses Asean Community Vision 2045 ahead of Summit

KUALA LUMPUR: The Asean Coordinating Council (ACC) has agreed to forward the Asean Community Vision 2045 document to its leaders for adoption at the 46th Asean Summit tomorrow.
This was one of the key outcomes of the ACC meeting chaired by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan today.
Wisma Putra said this marked the final ministerial-level meeting in preparation for the summit tomorrow.
"The meeting served as an important platform for reviewing Asean's progress under the Asean 2025 Vision and aligning collective priorities toward 'Asean 2045: Our Shared Future'.
"Foreign ministers exchanged views on the status of key documents and reports to be submitted to Asean leaders and reviewed developments related to Timor-Leste's full membership process.
"A key outcome of the meeting was the endorsement of the final report of the High-Level Task Force on the Asean Community Vision 2045.
"The council agreed to forward the vision document to Asean leaders for adoption at the summit," it said in a statement.
It said Mohamad also conveyed appreciation to member states, the co-chairs of the high-level task force, and the Asean secretariat for their contributions in shaping a forward-looking vision for the region.
The meeting also took note of five substantive reports and endorsed six reports for submission to the leaders.
The Kuala Lumpur Declaration on Asean 2045 is scheduled to be signed tomorrow, marking a strategic milestone that will guide Asean's next phase of community-building and regional leadership.

KUALA LUMPUR: Maybank Foundation and Anthill Fabric Gallery have marked a milestone with the groundbreaking of a weaving training centre in Argao, Cebu in the Philippines. It will equip women in Argao with the tools, knowledge, and market access they need to thrive, while ensuring that their textile traditions continue to flourish. "This expansion also reflects the programme's role in raising the floor of socio-economic inclusion across Asean, ensuring that underserved communities gain not only visibility, but also meaningful access to livelihoods, heritage preservation, and resilient ecosystems, where opportunities are made available to all," she said. Looking ahead, a new training centre is set to be established in Bukidnon province, envisioned as an all-in-one facility that will combine weaving, natural dye techniques, and fibre production, emphasising the use of abaca and other indigenous materials.

Malaysia proposes expansion of OIC-TPS

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has proposed expanding the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Trade Preferential System and the reduction of trade barriers to strengthen economic ties among its member states. The proposal was presented by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan during Malaysia's national statement at the 51st Session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting in Istanbul, Turkiye, on Saturday. Mohamad said OIC, as the second-largest intergovernmental organisation in the world, holds vast potential for strategic partnership. He cited the inaugural ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council-China Summit led by Malaysia in May, which witnessed a new historic economic partnership being forged, as a milestone in regional cooperation. 'Malaysia believes that this can support developing States to circumvent the impacts of the US-China trade war,' he said. Held under the themed 'The OIC In A Transforming World', the meeting was attended by more than 40 foreign ministers from OIC's 57 member states. The meeting also saw high-level participation from nearly 30 international organisations including UN, Arab League, Developing Eight (D-8), International Organisation for Migration and World Trade Organisation, reflecting the urgency of the current regional situation.

Malaysia warns rising Islamophobia used to justify Muslim persecution

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has expressed deep concern over the rise of Islamophobia, warning that normalisation of anti-Muslim sentiment is increasingly used to justify attacks against Muslims worldwide. Speaking at the 51st Session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting in Istanbul, Turkiye, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said incidents of discrimination and attacks against Muslims have reached unprecedented levels. 'Normalised Islamophobia has become the main justification of Israel's crimes against Palestine and Iran, as well as of the persecution of Muslims in some countries,' he said while delivering Malaysia's national statement at the meeting on Saturday. He urged for a strong partnership between the UN Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia and the Special Envoy of the OIC Secretary-General, in focusing on promoting understanding across faiths, and fighting against bigotry. Mohamad also called on the international community to take stronger action against Israel's systemic atrocities on Palestine and its recent illegal aggression against Iran which resulted in the deaths of innocent Iranian civilians. He warned that the international community's inaction only lends substance to Israel's belief that it is immune from consequence. 'The UN Security Council's paralysis over Israel's atrocities is utterly embarrassing. There can be no peace without justice. 'The very notion of justice demands that we confront the ridiculous and impossible conditions being placed on Palestinian statehood,' he said. He said Malaysia remains steadfast in its solidarity with the Palestinian people, while urging the global community to exert all efforts to realise an independent State of Palestine, based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as the capital. 'We stand at a critical juncture. The OIC's relevance depends on the strength of our institutions, including the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC),' he added. He said the theme of the meeting 'The OIC in a Transforming World', has called for member states to advance peace, socio-economic development, and collectively tackle the multiple crises facing our world. On the IPHRC, the Foreign Minister reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to the promotion of human rights, with an emphasis on economic, social, and cultural rights. Malaysia has been elected as a member of the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC) of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for the 2025–2028 term on the sidelines of the CFM meeting. 'These form the bedrock of sustainable development. By focusing on these areas, we can enable a resilient and enduring socio-economic growth. He also expressed confidence that Malaysia's representative to the IPHRC, Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr. Aishah Bidin, with her vast experience and valuable expertise - including in the realm of sustainable development - will make a meaningful contribution towards achieving this goal. Aishah will serve on the commission for the said term beginning this August, according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry. The two-day CFM meeting was attended by over 40 foreign ministers from OIC's 57 member states, and representatives from 30 international organisations, underscoring the importance of the meeting in addressing urgent regional geopolitical situations.
