
Kerala becomes first state to mandate robotics education for all Class 10 students
In a pioneering initiative, Kerala has emerged as the first state in the country to make robotics education mandatory for all 4.3 lakh students of class 10, starting from the upcoming academic year on June 2.
The integration of robotics into the 10th-grade ICT textbook, specifically the sixth chapter titled 'The World of Robots' in the first volume, will empower students to explore fundamental robotics concepts through engaging activities, an official statement said on Sunday.
These include circuit construction, utilising sensors and actuators, and controlling electronic devices using computer programming, K Anvar Sadath, CEO of KITE and Chairman of the ICT Textbook Committee, said in a statement.
KITE is the technical arm of the General Education Department of the Kerala government.
It has already distributed 29,000 robotic kits to high schools across the state to ensure the effective implementation of this curriculum.
'This ambitious initiative builds upon Kerala's prior success in making Artificial Intelligence (AI) learning accessible to all seventh-grade students, another national first achieved in the previous academic year,' Sadath said.
Demonstrating a continued commitment to future-ready skills, AI learning has now been incorporated into the ICT textbooks for grades 8, 9, and 10 as well.
The practical experience gained from the robotics curriculum piloted for Little KITEs (Kerala's IT club for students) has been instrumental in shaping this comprehensive rollout for all class 10 students, the statement further said.
The initial hands-on activity in the textbook challenges students to utilise components from the provided robotic kits – such as Arduino breadboards, IR sensors, servo motors, and jumper wires – to construct an automated sanitiser dispenser that activates upon detecting a hand, it said.
Progressing further, students will also delve into creating AI-powered smart home automation systems, including face-recognition-enabled smart doors.
To facilitate this, they will utilize the 'Face Detection Built-in Model' within the Pictoblocks software's programming IDE, leveraging webcams on laptops and Arduino kits supplied by KITE to program door-opening mechanisms.
KITE's innovative robotics learning approach is designed to equip students with the skills to address a wide range of practical problems through cutting-edge technologies.
KITE has already conducted the first phase of training on the new tenth-grade ICT textbook for 9,924 teachers.
Sadath said dedicated robotics training for teachers will be organised in July.
Furthermore, KITE will ensure the availability of additional robotic kits, extending support to unaided schools following the state syllabus that may require them.
The ICT textbook is being provided to all students in Malayalam, English, Tamil, and Kannada mediums, the official added in the statement.

Pointing to the State's affordability advantage, he said that Hyderabad offers high-quality medical procedures such as IVF, heart surgeries, and joint replacements at 70% to 90% lower costs compared to the West, without compromising on standards. 'It is not just about cost, it's about quality, care, and value. Telangana is delivering all three,' he said. He highlighted the need for proactive investments in innovation, research, and preventive healthcare. 'Our healthcare system cannot be reactive. It must stay ten steps ahead and for that, we must adopt technologies like AI, quantum computing, and data science at scale,' he said. He further added that Telangana is building hyperscale data centres, medical device manufacturing clusters, and a vibrant health-tech startup eco-system. 'We are training 2 lakh AI engineers and nurturing over 900 AI startups. Most of India's AI healthcare startups are based in Telangana,' the Minister said. The conference also featured insights from global technology leaders on the future of AI in healthcare. Chandu Thota, Vice President of Engineering at Google, described AI as one of the 'moonshot' solutions for the future of medicine. Michael D. Howell, Chief Clinical Officer at Google, highlighted the impact of AI on clinical decision-making and drug discovery. 'AI must be integrated into medicine with transparency, accountability, and empathy. Where drug discovery used to take a decade, AI can now identify promising treatments in months by analysing vast datasets, from clinical trials to genomics. This will make personalized medicine not just possible, but practical,' he said in his keynote address. Gorukanti Ravinder Rao, Founder and Chairman of Yashoda Group of Hospitals, reinforced the human-centric promise of AI in surgical care. 'AI is not here to replace doctors, it is here to empower them,' he said.

Digital news publishers' body bats for copyright protection in AI model training
Amid growing concerns over the misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and potential copyright violations, the Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) has welcomed the Centre's initiative to review the complex intersection of AI and copyright law. 'DNPA firmly believes that utilising the content of digital news publishers, without consent, for AI training and subsequent generative AI applications, such as search assistance and information purposes, constitutes an infringement of copyright. The association advocates for a regime that ensures fair compensation for content producers, recognising their rights in the digital landscape,' it said. Any government initiative 'to ensure fair play' is vital for the growth of digital news media in the country, it said. This initiative is headed by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, which will seek stakeholder feedback on how AI intersects with existing copyright laws. In its statement, the DNPA asserted that the use of digital news publishers' content without permission for AI training and generative applications constitutes copyright infringement. The association has strongly advocated for a regulatory framework that ensures fair compensation to content creators, safeguarding their rights in an evolving digital environment. 'DNPA looks forward to working with the ministry to formulate a fair and balanced regime that allows for fair compensation for content producers while allowing for AI models to build and evolve,' it said.

4-day ‘Hack to the Future Andhra 2025' held
Visakhapatnam: Marking successful completion of a year of piloting Artificial Intelligence (AI) curriculum for Classes VII, VIII and IX across 100 government secondary schools, the government of Andhra Pradesh celebrated State-level showcasing of student innovation and teacher leadership. The pilot programme, implemented across Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas, Andhra Pradesh Model School, government high schools in the districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam, introduced learners to foundational AI concepts, future skills and career education. Celebrating the achievement, a four-day-long 'Hack to the Future Andhra 2025' was organised at GITAM, bringing students, teachers and education leaders to celebrate future-ready learning by the government of AP in partnership with Quest Alliance, Samagra Shiksha (SSA AP) and Leadership for Equity. It also equipped teachers with tools and training to facilitate technology-integrated learning. G Sridevi, a Telugu educator teaching in KGBV Saravakota, said, 'As a Telugu teacher with little knowledge in technology, I relied on poems and stories to teach. Gradually, I began using small apps and IFP panels to engage my students.' The State programme director, Samagra Shiksha, Andhra Pradesh B Srinivasa Rao, said, 'This initiative is not just about introducing students to AI but also about bringing alive the State's ambitious vision of 'Swarna Andhra 2047' where AP emerges as an AI Hub for the country.' The event featured a hackathon bootcamp, a prototype showcase, and a teacher recognition ceremony. In all 39 students, working in teams of three, developed AI-powered prototypes to solve local problems, with guidance from 13 trained teachers. These projects addressed issues ranging from waste management to access to public services, and were presented to an expert panel comprising professors, funders, educationists and state officials.
