India's business correspondence sector to cross $1.7bln by FY2025: Report

Zawya07-04-2025

New Delhi: India's Business Correspondent (BC) sector will cross Rs 147 billion by financial year 2025 (FY25), charting an impressive 19 per cent compound annual growth rate (CAGR), said a report by BLS E-Services.
As per the report by digital service provider, growth is being driven by the expansion of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), deeper penetration of Basic Savings Bank Deposit Accounts (BSBDAs), and the increasing popularity of Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes that channel subsidies and welfare funds directly to beneficiaries.
Business Correspondents are bank-appointed representatives who deliver essential banking services in underserved and remote areas.
Functioning on a commission-based model, BCs operate as the extended arm of formal banking institutions, enabling last-mile delivery of financial services. They earn either a fixed fee or a percentage of the transaction value, depending on the type of service provided.
According to the report, the industry grew from Rs 47 billion in FY2018 to Rs 102 billion in the financial year 2023 (FY23).
The report added that as rural households adopt formal financial services, transaction volumes have spiked, particularly in areas where physical bank branches remain scarce.
"With over 1.35 million BC agents operating across India as per PMJDY report, these banking intermediaries are enabling millions of people--especially in rural regions--to access financial services. From cash deposits, withdrawals, and remittances to bill payments, Aadhaar-enabled services, and microfinance lending, BCs have become an essential bridge between formal banking institutions and the underserved population," said Shikhar Aggarwal, Chairman, BLS E-Services.
The report further added that the rise in BSBDAs under PMJDY has also contributed significantly to the sector's momentum.
As per the report, the number is expected to exceed 550 million by FY2025 from 380 million accounts in 2020.
Most of these accounts are held by rural customers, and the majority of transactions--such as benefit disbursals under DBT, cash withdrawals, and remittances--are executed through BCs using Aadhaar authentication.
According to Lokanath Panda, COO, BLS E-Services, "The Business Correspondent (BC) industry is projected to grow at a 19 per cent CAGR from FY22 to FY25P, expanding from Rs 102.9 billion to Rs 147.4 billion. Key growth drivers include the expanding rural outreach of BCs, rising BSBDA accounts and deposits, increased transaction volumes, and the growing adoption of government DBT schemes."
The report added that the technological integration has further strengthened the BC model.
Platforms such as UPI, Aadhaar-enabled Payment Systems (AePS), RuPay, and IMPS, along with mobile banking applications, have made financial transactions more secure and accessible, even in the country's most remote corners.
According to NPCI data, over 520 million AePS transactions are already being processed every month, with Business Correspondents playing a pivotal role in this volume.

Adnoc L&S, Borouge sign deal to boost UAE petrochemical exports

Borouge and Adnoc Logistics & Services (Adnoc L&S) have entered a 15-year strategic partnership that will support a significant increase in the production and export of petrochemicals from the UAE. The mutually beneficial service agreement will deliver a minimum guaranteed value of $531 million (Dhs1,950 million), supporting the next phase of Borouge's accelerated growth plans, driving operational cost savings over the full contract term, realising more than $50 million in cost savings and efficiencies in the first five years alone, and enhancing the company's supply chain network. The agreement covers port management, container handling, and feeder container ship services for the Borouge Container Terminal in Al Ruwais Industrial City, Abu Dhabi. Adnoc L&S will manage the transportation of up to 70 per cent of Borouge's annual production, which will increase significantly following the completion of the Borouge 4 plant expansion. It will deploy a minimum of two dedicated container feeder ships to transport Borouge's products from Al Ruwais to the deepwater ports of Jebel Ali in Dubai and Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi. Hazeem Sultan Al Suwaidi, CEO of Borouge, commented, 'This agreement builds on our long-standing collaboration with Adnoc L&S, a partnership that has been instrumental in meeting the evolving needs of our customers in high-growth markets. 'With the rapid increase in our production capacity, we are advancing our capabilities in delivering differentiated products and solutions efficiently, while keeping pace with rising global demand.' As Borouge plans to ramp up production capacity by 1.4 million tonnes per annum by the end of 2026 through its Borouge 4 mega project, Borouge will become the world's largest single-site polyolefin complex. The partnership with Adnoc L&S will further enhance Borouge's supply chain efficiency as well as reinforcing Adnoc L&S' commitment to delivering innovative, integrated supply chain solutions that enhance trade, strengthen industrial resilience, and support the UAE's vision for economic diversification and global leadership. Captain Abdulkareem Al Masabi, CEO of Adnoc L&S, said, 'This comprehensive container terminal agreement marks a major milestone in our successful partnership with Borouge, delivering on Adnoc L&S' strategy to provide seamless, end-to-end logistics solutions that power the UAE's industrial growth and export ambitions. China May services activity grows despite US tariff concerns, Caixin PMI shows

BEIJING - China's services activity expanded at a slightly faster pace in May, with new orders growing more quickly than in April, though new export orders declined due to uncertainty stemming from U.S. tariffs, a private sector survey showed on Thursday. The Caixin/S&P Global services purchasing managers' index (PMI), rose to 51.1 in May from 50.7, remaining above the 50-mark that separates expansion from contraction. The reading was broadly in line with China's official survey, which showed services activity edging up to 50.2 from 50.1 the previous month. The Caixin PMI is considered a better read of trends among smaller, export-oriented firms, particularly along the east coast, while the official PMI primarily tracks large and medium-sized enterprises, including state-owned companies. China's economy grew faster than expected in the first quarter, and the government has maintained its annual growth target of around 5%. However, analysts warn that U.S. tariffs could significantly dampen momentum. Beijing and Washington have agreed to a 90-day pause during which both would cut import tariffs, raising hopes of easing tensions. Yet investors remain concerned that negotiations could progress slowly amid persistent global economic risks. "On the external demand front, new export orders remained sluggish in both the manufacturing and services sectors. Average costs for businesses rose slightly, but selling prices continued to weaken, increasing profit pressure," said Zhe Wang, senior economist at Caixin Insight Group. However, faster services growth failed to offset a drop in manufacturing production. The Caixin China General Composite PMI fell to 49.6 from 51.1 the previous month, marking the first contraction since December 2022. Last month, the central bank eased monetary policy to limit damage from the trade war with Washington, and lowered the ceiling for deposit rates to offset margin pressure on banks and prompt savers to spend or invest more. Both supply and demand expanded at a slightly quicker pace, as businesses sought to attract new clients. However, foreign demand weakened due to U.S.-China tariff uncertainty, with new export orders declining for the first time this year, the survey showed. Employment-related indices remained slightly above the 50-mark. Some firms continued to reduce headcounts to cut costs, while others hired more workers to meet rising demand. Service sector businesses faced the fastest input cost inflation since October 2024, driven by higher purchase prices and wages. Average output charges declined for the fourth month in a row in May. Overall sentiment over the next 12 months remained positive in the sector, with companies optimistic that the negative effects of U.S. tariffs may diminish over time. "Currently, unfavourable factors remain relatively prevalent. Uncertainty in the external trade environment has increased, adding to domestic economic headwinds," said Wang "In terms of policy, the lasting impact of earlier consumption-stimulating measures needs further evaluation," Wang added "More importantly, boosting domestic demand should be grounded in improving household incomes." According to a press release issued by VFS Global, the collaboration aims to make immigration services more accessible to US residents through designated VFS Global locations. As part of the initiative, the two organisations will set up a Centre of Excellence focused on high-quality immigration advisory services. 'The recently announced 'Gold Card' initiative has generated significant interest among ultra-high-net-worth individuals,' he said. 'According to the US Department of Commerce, the programme may offer exemptions from income tax on global earnings for eligible participants, further enhancing its appeal.' 'Our collaboration with Rayad Group reflects a shared commitment to delivering exceptional service to our customers. By combining VFS Global's extensive worldwide operations and recognised leadership in visa services with Rayad Group's deep expertise in immigration and legal consulting, we are well-positioned to provide clients with comprehensive, up-to-date guidance on migration strategies and regulatory compliance,' he said.
