Over RM30 million allocated to upgrade four SRBJ schools
JOHOR BAHRU: Four Bangsa Johor Pioneer Schools (SRBJ) will be upgraded in phases starting at the end of this month, with funding exceeding RM30 million.
Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said RM6.22 million has been allocated by the state government, while RM24 million comes from private sector sponsorship.
The schools, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Seri Kota Puteri 2, SMK Tasek Utara, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Seri Kota Puteri 4, and SK Tasek Utara, will be equipped with smart school facilities and artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
'This is part of our plan to upgrade the schools, but improving infrastructure alone is not enough. Our goal is for Johor to become a developed state by 2030. To achieve that, we need a major shift, and it must start with education,' he said during a townhall session with SRBJ teachers and parents today.
Also present were State Education and Information Committee chairman Aznan Tamin and State Youth, Sports, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Committee chairman Mohd Hairi Mad Shah.
Meanwhile, Aznan said the state government, through the Raja Zarith Sofiah Foundation, is collaborating with Apple Education to strengthen the SRBJ initiative.
He said through sponsorship from QSR Brands, 2,496 iPads have been provided for 2,264 students and 213 teachers.
'These four SRBJ schools have also been recognised as Apple Distinguished Schools. Globally, there are only 1,000 such schools, and just nine in Malaysia.
'Of those, five are boarding schools and four are SRBJ - making them the only daily schools in the country with this recognition,' he said.
Aznan added that the state aims to use the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) and International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) as benchmarks to raise the quality of SRBJ education.
'Students will need to be assessed before they can sit for these exams. For now, the PSLE and IGCSE question standards will serve as our benchmark,' he said.

OCBC pledges over RM11bil financing to support Johor-Singapore SEZ
KUALA LUMPUR: OCBC Group has pledged over RM11 billion in financing to businesses in Johor since the beginning of last year, as part of its support for the development of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). The bank expects to extend at least RM3 billion more in financing by year-end to support investments across various sectors. This includes real estate, oil and gas, manufacturing and data centres. OCBC Group chief executive officer Helen Wong said it has a longstanding presence in Johor, with its roots in the state going back over a century. The first OCBC Malaysia branch in Johor was established in 1917, and the bank now operates eight branches in the state, out of a total of 38 nationwide. "Having already committed over RM11 billion in financing to businesses in Johor, we are looking to further catalyse local economic activities and cross-border investments in Johor and the JS-SEZ through at least another RM3 billion in financing by year-end. "We are honoured to have this opportunity to explore with the Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi how we can build on these solid foundations and leverage the full capabilities of the OCBC Group's extensive regional franchise to contribute to the success of the JS-SEZ," she said. Onn Hafiz said OCBC's RM11 billion financing commitment, along with plans to inject at least RM3 billion more by the end of the year, demonstrates strong confidence in Johor's economic trajectory and investment prospects. "We welcome this partnership and look forward to working closely with OCBC to unlock Johor's full potential as Asean's next economic powerhouse," he said.

222 Johor projects worth RM10b yet to start, says MB
JOHOR BARU: Johor has 222 projects scheduled between 2016 and 2024 that have yet to commence. The projects, worth around RM10 billion, include various public facilities such as roads, mosques, hospitals and clinics, said Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi. "When I ask in meetings, they say, 'Don't worry, we'll check with the respective ministries, we'll get it approved.' "All these projects are for the people, but they still haven't started," he said in his speech at the 2025 Umno Tebrau division delegates' meeting here on Saturday. Onn Hafiz, who is also the Johor Umno liaison chairman, said Umno leaders in the state risk incurring public anger if the projects are not implemented. "Council members, village heads, community leaders – don't just attend meetings to look good. "If the projects don't go through, if the allocations are not used properly and appropriately, let me ask – who will the people be angry with? "At the agency? Or at the Umno leaders? They will be angry with us. That's why we need to go down to the ground and inspect things ourselves," he said. The Machap assemblyman said the federal government should place its trust in the state leadership to approve and implement projects in Johor. He suggested that the federal government initiate a pilot programme with Johor to evaluate the proposal's effectiveness. "If you don't want to implement it nationwide, make Johor the pilot state. "Insya-Allah, the Umno and Barisan Nasional leaders in Johor can be trusted and will shoulder these responsibilities for religion, race and homeland," he said. Onn Hafiz expressed disappointment at the lack of implementation. "I don't like making people angry. "But when it comes to the welfare of the people, don't test me. I will fight all the way for the people – for the people of Johor. That is the spirit of Johor Umno. "What we say is not just rhetoric. If we say it, Insya-Allah, we will deliver it," he said. Also present at the event were Johor Umno liaison deputy chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan and Johor Umno secretary Datuk Abdul Halim Suleiman, who is also Tebrau Umno division chief.

UTM trio develops 24-hour self-service printing solution
JOHOR BAHRU: What began as a trivial issue - printing assignments outside regular hours - became the driving force behind an innovative venture by three Universiti Teknologi Malaysia students, who developed PrintTEX, a self-service kiosk offering round-the-clock printing access. Through their startup, Uninet Teknologi Enterprise, the trio from the Faculty of Computing and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering – Fikri Akmal Aizuddin Bahrim, 23, as Chief Executive Officer; Iqmal Aizat Mohd Zamri, 23, as Chief Technology Officer; and Low Lie Xin, 25, as Chief Operating Officer – began operating the kiosk in December 2023. Fikri Akmal Aizuddin, a final-year computer science student, said the kiosk is complemented by the PrintTEX mobile app, which offers on-demand printing services with rates as low as RM0.20 for black and white and RM0.45 for colour prints. 'The PrintTEX app comes with several handy features, such as users being able to find the nearest kiosk, upload documents and make payments online. 'Users just need to install the app, upload their documents, make a minimum payment of RM3, and then head to the kiosk to scan the QR code and print straight away,' he said when met by Bernama here.\ Fikri Akmal Aizuddin said they first developed a basic prototype or minimum viable product (MVP) in August 2023 using their own funds, which covered development costs, hardware such as printers, storage systems and other electronic components. He shared that with full support from the UTM Centre for Student Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship, his team successfully secured RM30,000 from the Malaysian Technology Development Corporation (MTDC) to assist with system development, documentation, and company registration. 'We developed the entire system ourselves, from the mobile app and integration platform to printer configuration and payment management. It took us around six months for the research and development and another month or two to build the first unit,' he said. Currently, two PrintTEX kiosks are available at the UTM Skudai campus – one in the 24-hour Study Room at the Sultanah Zanariah Library and another at Arked Lestari – while a third unit is operating outside Johor at UNISEL Bestari Jaya in Selangor. The company has also been approached by two higher education institutions under MARA that have expressed interest in allocating space for the installation of the Internet of Things (IoT)-based kiosk at their campuses.
