'A wonderful morning for the world' — Israelis celebrate U.S. strikes on Iran

JERUSALEM — 'Hallelujah. We've been waiting for this moment. I knew it would come. A lot of people doubted that it would come,' said Fleur Hassan-Nahoum, an Israeli politician and media commentator, as we waited in a public bomb shelter in Jerusalem early Sunday morning. Article content Hours earlier, the United States struck several of Iran's key nuclear facilities, in some cases using bunker-buster bombs to destroy deeply buried infrastructure that had been beyond the reach of Israeli weapons. While the exact extent of the inflicted damage was (and remains) unknown, it was already evident, even in those first hours, that much had been destroyed. Article content Article content Article content Despite the sleep deprivation of an early-morning alarm, the mood in the shelter was celebratory. Article content Article content 'Israelis have been waiting patiently for American involvement, and Israelis don't know how to wait patiently for anything,' continued Hassan-Nahoum, who said that she did not fear retaliation from the Iranian leadership because Israel had spent the previous week 'cutting off their legs.' Article content She said that, 'Being in a shelter at 7:30 in the morning, losing people, having buildings destroyed, running to shelters, having our children traumatized. Everybody's willing to do that for the sake of destroying the existential threat against our country.' Raphael, a dual U.S.-Israeli citizen, was similarly elated. 'I think it's a wonderful morning for the world. We've woken up to a new reality where we've seen one potential nuclear menace taken off of the map,' he told me amid the dim light. Article content Having just returned from the United States, he understood that Americans are 'reticent' about getting entangled in another Middle Eastern 'forever war.' However, he feels that this situation is different from Iraq or Afghanistan, because, this time, the goal is not to reconstruct a foreign nation, but only to de-fang an emerging nuclear state that could pose a 'very credible threat to the West.' Article content Article content He said that regime change is needed, characterizing the Islamic Republic as an 'evil state that's trapped the (Iranian) people in tyranny.' Like others in the shelter, he was unconcerned about Iranian retribution, because Jews have 'survived many tougher ordeals over thousands of years' and 'whatever they throw our way, we've seen worse before.' Article content Article content The alarm ended soon after and life resumed. The day was hot and sunny. Iran had launched around 35 missiles that morning — far fewer than the hundreds that had been sent in the initial days of the war — but only three managed to land. At a nearby cafe, locals drank coffee and discussed the American strikes over pastries. Article content But the city was relatively quiet. Most businesses were closed by emergency mandate, and only food stores operated. One Australian tourist, Zevi Gestetner, explained how the attacks caused his government to cancel its evacuation plans for the day, leaving his family stranded. They sat on a patio together, mulling their options, as buskers performed music down the street.

IDF targets Iran's 'Destruction of Israel' countdown clock in Tehran: defence minister

Israel said it employed 'unprecedented force' to attack key targets within Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's regime on Monday morning. Article content Among them, Minister of Defence Israel Katz said, was the 'Destruction of Israel' clock in Tehran's Palestine Square — a digital billboard that has been counting down the days until the promised 'annihilation' of Israel since 2017. Article content Article content Other targets in the capital included the headquarters for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' international security and its militia arm, the Basij, as well as Evin Prison, where 'political prisoners and opponents of the regime' end up, Katz posted to X. The co-ed prison has a history of abusing, ignoring and violating the human rights of some inmates, mainly women. Article content Iran has long had a massive clock in the center of Tehran counting down until Israel's destruction. Israel just blew it up. — Avi Mayer אבי מאיר (@AviMayer) June 23, 2025 Article content Article content The clock's timer dates back to September 2015 when Iran, trying to ease Western sanctions, struck a deal with the U.S., China, the U.K., France, Germany and Russia that it would limit and reduce its uranium enrichment. Parts of the agreement included a 25-year timeline. Article content Khamenei, in a speech to followers after, suggested that the timeframe shouldn't alleviate Israel's concerns in the interim. Article content 'Firstly, you will not see next 25 years,' he was quoted in an X post to his account. 'God willing, there will be nothing as Zionist regime by next 25 years. Article content 'Secondly, until then, struggling, heroic and jihadi morale will leave no moment of serenity for Zionists.' Article content About 20 months later, on June 18, 2017, demonstrators unveiled a clock to mark Quds Day — an annual event meant to support Palestinians and oppose Israel, established in 1979 by Ruhollah Khomeini, founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran. In red digital lettering presented in Persian, English and Arabic, the clock displays the number of days above the text 'Left before the destruction of Israel' and a repetition of Khamenei's statement. Article content The words are presented on an Israeli flag intersected by a fist painted green, red and white. Article content When it debuted, it gave Israel 8.411 days until its destruction, which would be roughly 25 years from the date that Khamenei predicted — Sept. 9, 2040, what will be the last day of Rosh Hashana, Judaism's new year and the first of the high holy days on its calendar. Canada starts busing citizens out of Israel days after allies began

(AP Photo/Vahid Salemi) OTTAWA — Ottawa has started evacuating Canadians from Israel days after telling them to find their own way to neighbouring countries. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says bus services started this morning from Tel Aviv and the West Bank to Jordan. She says bus routes also started yesterday to take Canadians who fled Iran for Turkey to locations where they can secure transport out of the region. Last Thursday, Anand announced that Canadian consular officials would be standing by at border crossings to help citizens who fled Israel or Iran to reach Canada through commercial means. Countries like France and Australia have been evacuating citizens by bus, while some have managed to flee Israel by ship. The airspace has been largely closed over both countries and other parts of the Middle East as Israel and Iran exchange missiles. Ottawa has come in for criticism over its arrangements for Canadians looking to escape the region and federal officials are set to brief media on the situation this afternoon. By Dylan Robertson.
