Adnoc Gas joins MSCI Emerging Market Index

Trade Arabia03-06-2025

Adnoc Gas will be the largest addition to the Index by market capitalisation and joins Adnoc Distribution and Adnoc Drilling which were added to the benchmark in 2021 and 2024, respectively.
The company's inclusion follows its successful $2.84 billion marketed offering of 3.1 billion shares in February, which increased the number of shares available to the public by 80% and helped the stock successfully meet key eligibility criteria for entry into the Index.
This marks a significant milestone in the Adnoc Gas's ongoing efforts to enhance its global investment profile, attract a broader and more diversified investor base and improve liquidity of its shares.
Through their inclusion in the MSCI Index, the three Adnoc Group companies collectively raise both Adnoc's and the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange's (ADX) global investment profile, while enhancing liquidity in the UAE market and further cementing the UAE's position as an attractive destination for foreign investment.
As with Adnoc Distribution and Adnoc Drilling's addition to the Index, Adnoc Gas experienced a surge in trading on the final day before its index inclusion, attracting $469 million in capital inflows.
The inclusion of Adnoc Gas in the Index also marks another milestone in Adnoc's efforts to foster growth of the UAE's capital market, which began in 2017 with the public listing of Adnoc Distribution on the ADX.
Since then, Adnoc has brought another five of its subsidiaries to the public market, with a current combined market cap of around $140 billion.

Abu Dhabi Makes Major Push Into LNG With $19 Billion Santos Takeover

Abu Dhabi is making its biggest energy play yet, as it seeks to become a major global force in liquefied natural gas (LNG). Its state oil company, ADNOC, through its investment arm XRG PJSC, has led a $19 billion takeover offer for Australia's Santos Ltd., a move that would give it direct access to LNG production and exports into booming Asian markets, according to Bloomberg. 'Abu Dhabi is long oil, but is seeking to be a more material player in LNG markets,' said Bernstein analysts led by Neil Beveridge. 'The acquisition of Santos would help enable Adnoc to become a bigger LNG player in key growth markets in Asia.' Santos' LNG capacity is expected to hit 7.5 million tons annually once Australia's Barossa project begins later this year. Combined with ADNOC's existing 6 million tons of domestic LNG capacity and a planned 9.6 million-ton terminal, the deal would position Abu Dhabi as a competitive mid-tier global LNG supplier. 'If completed, the deal could push Adnoc into the ranks of majors like Shell and ExxonMobil,' Bernstein analysts noted. Bloomberg Intelligence adds that it could give Adnoc a 15–20 million ton per year (MTPA) portfolio, depending on how it scales operations. 'It would still be a big leap from where they are now, which is mostly domestic-focused,' said BI analyst Salih Yilmaz. Bloomberg writes that the acquisition also advances Abu Dhabi's broader strategy: convert oil wealth into sustainable economic growth. Beyond LNG, the UAE is investing in tech, tourism, and manufacturing while aiming for gas self-sufficiency this decade. XRG PJSC, ADNOC's $80 billion investment arm launched in late 2023, is leading the charge. It aims to double its value within 10 years and become one of the top five integrated global gas and LNG businesses. XRG already has LNG deals in place, including a 20-year supply contract for 1.9 million tons per year from NextDecade's Rio Grande LNG in the U.S. With Santos' addition, XRG's portfolio would swell to about 14 million tons per year in projects, stakes, and supply contracts — expanding its reach into high-demand Asian markets and reducing reliance on U.S. deals.

Man City crave winning feeling at Club World Cup

Bolstered by a £100 million ($135 million) spending spree ahead of the Club World Cup, Manchester City are determined to erase the memory of a disappointing season by returning to winning ways in the United States. For the first time in eight years, City ended the domestic campaign without a major trophy as Pep Guardiola's men surrendered the Premier League crown to Liverpool after an unprecedented four consecutive titles. A Champions League exit before the last 16 for the first time since 2012/13 and a shock FA Cup final defeat against Crystal Palace compounded a miserable season for a club that has grown used to success since an Abu Dhabi-backed takeover 17 years ago. At one time the month-long expanded Club World Cup, sandwiched between two gruelling seasons, was the last thing Guardiola or his players appeared to want. Ballon d'Or winner Rodri hinted back in September that a players' strike was 'close' over fixture congestion. Defender Manuel Akanji more recently said the City squad was 'not exactly overjoyed' at playing in the tournament given the limited rest time. However, City are keen to turn the page from last season and begin afresh with major changes in the squad and coaching staff. Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Marcus Bettinelli were all signed last week to beat the deadline to feature in the Club World Cup from the start. City also spent more than £172 million in January on Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Nico Gonzalez. Adding Claudio Echeverri, who arrived in Manchester in January at the end of a loan spell at River Plate, nine of Guardiola's 27-man squad for the tournament have been at City for less than six months. Former City captain Kyle Walker and club record signing Jack Grealish have been left out of the travelling party in a changing of the guard. 'Whole world will be watching' Meanwhile, Guardiola has also made radical changes to his staff with Pep Lijnders, Jurgen Klopp's former assistant at Liverpool, and ex-City defender Kolo Toure joining the backroom team and three other coaches departing. 'This is a very, very serious competition,' said Guardiola. 'In the summer, the whole world will be watching this. 'A big number of the top teams in the world will be competing in this tournament and I can assure you, we're going to give it our best shot. We're going there to win it.' City begin the tournament as third favourites in the British bookmakers odds behind newly-crowned European champions Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid. They should ease through a group containing Morocco's Wydad Casablanca, Al Ain of Abu Dhabi and Italian giants Juventus. Yet there is an air of mystery around what to expect from City given the fresh faces and their inconsistency over the last season. After a miserable mid-winter run of one win in 13 games in all competitions, Guardiola's side recovered to an extent as they finished third in the Premier League. The additions of Reijnders and Cherki add some much-needed verve to an ageing midfield and compensate for the departure of Kevin De Bruyne to Napoli. Ait-Nouri's arrival ends a long spell without a natural left-back and will add an extra attacking dimension down that side. Most crucially of all, though, Rodri is back from the cruciate knee ligament injury that decimated his and City's season. When the Spanish midfielder went down against Arsenal in late September, City were still undefeated and top of the Premier League. His importance as the key cog in Guardiola's machine was brutally exposed in the months that followed. The 28-year-old made his return in the final week of the Premier League season. With Rodri restored and Guardiola's squad refreshed, City could be a force to be reckoned with again over the next month.
