Chinese automakers build significant leads in zero-emission vehicle market, research finds

Time of India5 days ago

Chinese automakers
are rapidly pulling ahead in the global zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) market, according to research firm
International Council on Clean Transportation
(ICCT).
WHY IT'S IMPORTANT
The global EV market is currently experiencing intense competition among its key players.
China has a crucial role in the global EV transition, as it now accounts for over 11 million
electric vehicles
sold annually, which corresponds to more than half of global EV sales, ICCT said in a report.
Electric vehicle sales in China surpassed over one million units in a single month for the first time this year, driven by strong domestic demand and targeted export efforts from Chinese manufacturers, Rho Motion said earlier.
BY THE NUMBERS
China-based automakers took the 5 top positions in ZEV class coverage, and 5 of 6 top positions for EV sales share, with companies like
Geely
and
SAIC
already reaching 50% EV sales share achieving their 2025 goals a year sooner than planned, ICCT data showed.
BYD exceeded Tesla in global battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales for the first time in 2024, with a 25% increase in BEV sales and 47% increase in combined BEV and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) sales compared to 2023, the research firm said, adding both companies are in the "Leaders" category of the rating.
KEY QUOTES
"As China-based automakers expand globally, other leading global manufacturers face urgent pressure to accelerate their own transitions or risk losing competitive ground," said Drew Kodjak, president and CEO of the ICCT.
"For the wider global auto industry, this is no longer just about meeting future goals - it's about remaining competitive today in a market that's charging up," he added.

Raymond Realty eyes higher sales, launches in FY26

Bengaluru: Raymond Realty, which is scheduled to list on the stock exchanges on 1 July, is looking at faster growth through higher home sales and several project launches in 2025-26, said a top company executive. The real estate firm was demerged from Raymond Ltd on 1 May and will list as a standalone entity. Mumbai-based Raymond Realty clocked around ₹2,300 crore of sales in FY25, and is targeting at least 20% growth this year. It also expects a 20% return on capital employed. Also read: Gautam Singhania meets European royal Prince Albert II: Here's why they met, what they discussed & more By the end of FY26, it plans to launch six projects - two in suburban Thane, where Raymond owns about 100 acres, and four projects in different locations across Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) - Wadala, Sion, Mahim and Bandra. The developer currently has six projects under execution. Raymond Realty's residential portfolio, combining projects under execution and the ones to be launched, has a gross development value (GDV) of ₹40,000 crore. Of this, projects worth ₹25,000 crore GDV would be in Thane alone. The remaining projects of ₹15,000 crore GDV are in MMR. 'In the next 3-4 years, we will double our sales and portfolio size. As a company, we are trying to solve for two things in the industry - quality of projects and timely delivery. We also want to focus on post delivery service, and have started our own facilities management arm," Raymond Realty chief executive Harmohan Sahni said in an interview. Also read: Centre links part of state capex loans to new reforms in land, and digitization The demerger will consolidate the group's real estate business under a single entity, which, going forward, will further unlock the firm's potential as a pure-play property development vertical. The company will sell at a broad price range of ₹20,000-65,000 per sq ft, and is not looking to sell below that, or in the uber luxury category. 'We can't go lower than ₹20,000-22,000 per sq ft. We will not dilute the brand, and it is not a price-sensitive market," he added. MMR, India's most valuable property market, stands as one of the leading contributors to pan-India launches and sales. Most of the projects Raymond Realty has signed are redevelopment projects. The newly signed projects, in Mahim and Wadala, are a Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) redevelopment and a slum redevelopment project respectively. Also read: Centre weighs easing conditions for interest-free capex loans to states 'We will continue to pursue an asset-light model by signing projects through the joint development route as it is capital efficient. We are a net debt-free company," Sahni said. Beyond Mumbai, the company is exploring project opportunities to enter the Pune property market. 'We are choosy about the deals we want to sign," he added. MMR among all the top cities witnessed the highest sales of around 155,335 units in 2024, almost the same as 2023. Pune followed with around 81,090 units sold. The two western markets together led residential sales last year, said Anarock Property Consultants.

Rare earth supply crunch: Over 21,000 jobs in India's audio electronics sector at risk due to China curbs, says Elcina report

More than 21,000 jobs in India's audio electronics sector are at risk due to China's curbs on the export of rare earth metals, industry body Elcina has said in a report shared with the government. In April, China implemented stricter licensing rules on the export of key rare earth elements like terbium and dysprosium, which are essential for making Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) magnets — widely used in consumer electronics such as hearables, wearables, and speakers. The Electronics Industries Association of India (Elcina) said the move has disrupted supply chains globally and is severely affecting India's fast-growing wearables and hearables market, forcing many manufacturers to switch to importing fully assembled speaker modules from China, PTI reported. 'This creates a regressive trend — from component manufacturing back to finished good imports dependency. Over 5,000–6,000 direct jobs and 15,000 indirect jobs are at risk in speaker and audio component manufacturing, especially in Noida and South India,' Elcina noted. India dependent on China for NdFeB magnets Rare earth magnets make up 5–7% of the bill of materials, and India imports nearly 100% of its NdFeB magnet requirement, with China accounting for 90% of those imports. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Seniors Born 1939-1969 Receive 9 Benefits This Month Bettys Perks Learn More Undo Prices for Chinese magnets have surged amid tightened supply and administrative delays, while alternatives from Japan, the EU and the US are 2–3 times costlier and lack adequate capacity. Electronics manufacturer Videotex, which produces televisions for brands such as Havells (Lloyd), Reliance (BPL, Reconnect), Toshiba, and Vijay Sales, said the situation poses challenges, but the immediate impact on TV production is expected to be limited. 'Rare earth-based magnets are critical in TV manufacturing, particularly for speakers due to their compact size and high performance. However, we are working closely with our suppliers to ensure sufficient stock for the upcoming season,' said Arjun Bajaj, Director of Videotex. He added that Videotex is also exploring alternative magnet options like ferrite, which come with acceptable performance trade-offs, and stressed that this disruption highlights the need for long-term strategies to localise and diversify sourcing. Elcina urges government action Elcina has urged the government to begin government-to-government (G2G) talks with China, seek industry-specific exemptions, and boost domestic R&D and manufacturing under the electronics component manufacturing scheme. It also recommended that the government consider a production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for critical minerals, to reduce India's reliance on China and ensure the resilience of its electronics supply chain.
